See the Waxing Gibbous Moon and Antares - The Red Supergiant Star is Ready to Go SupernovaOn July 1 and 2, 2020 let the Moon introduce you to Antares. Antares is a red supergiant star. Any red-looking star that you can see with the unaided eye is either a red giant or red supergiant star.
This star, which is in the autumn of its years, is expected to explode as a supernova one of these days. No telling when that will be, however. It could happen tomorrow or a million years from now.
If Antares replaced the Sun in our solar system its circumference would extend beyond the orbit of Mars.
Antares is the brightest star in the constellation Scorpius the Scorpion. The red supergiant lies about 600 light-years from the Earth. [ link to www.youtube.com (secure)]
