Pronouncements like these surface every few years, and many gullible people make life-altering decisions based on them. The primary reason that date-setting for the end times is wrong is that Jesus told His disciples, in reply to their question about the timing of future things, “It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority” (Acts 1:7).

The date-setting predictions people make have always been wrong. Always. Throughout history, self-proclaimed prophets, well-meaning preachers, and outright charlatans have declared with certainty that a specific date in the near future was the day Jesus would come back. And then He didn’t. Those prophets had just proven that they were not true prophets (Deuteronomy 18:21–22). Jesus said that no man knows the day nor the hour of His return (Matthew 24:36), yet some rationalize their date-setting by saying that we might not know the day or hour, we can still get pretty close. Apparently not.

One reason God has not told us “the day or the hour” when Jesus will come again is that He wants us to live our lives by faith, for His glory, before an unbelieving world. He wants us to be involved in our communities (1 Thessalonians 4:11), serving our churches (Ephesians 6:7), and raising our children to know and honor Him (Deuteronomy 6:6). One common response to end-times date-setting is that people stop engaging in life. They pack up, preparing for the Apocalypse. One such group in the 1830s followed a preacher named William Miller. Miller became convinced that Jesus would return in October of 1844, and he was able to convince many others, some of whom sold their possessions, quit their jobs, and waited for the end. Miller was wrong. Jesus did not return in 1844, and the non-event became known as the Great Disappointment. Followers salvaged Miller’s reputation by claiming that Jesus had, in fact, returned—spiritually—to the heavenly temple. The disillusioned group was ripe for a new leader and soon found themselves uniting under the leadership of “prophetess” Ellen G. White and became known as the Seventh-day Adventists.

Another reason date-setting for the end times is wrong is that it tends to disregard Jesus’ final command to His followers. Shortly before He ascended back into heaven, Jesus told His followers to “go into all the world and make disciples” (Matthew 28:19). He did not say, “Focus your energies on trying to figure out when I’m coming back.” He gave us several parables that encourage an attitude of readiness, but that readiness does not mean sky-watching. It means being faithful in all He told us to pursue, like holiness (Hebrews 12:14), cross-carrying (Luke 9:23), and loving the people He brings across our paths (Romans 13:8). Jesus urged us to store up treasure in heaven (Luke 12:33), to seek unity with other believers (John 17:22–23), and to work as harvesters in His fields (Luke 10:2). He said nothing of trying to predict the date of His return. When we become preoccupied with trying to predict the unpredictable, our priorities are not in the right order.

Date-setting for the end times—and then being proven wrong—also prompts derision from unbelievers. Skeptics already mock the supernatural and discount the Bible as nonsense (1 Corinthians 1:18). They often look for reasons to mock Christianity. When a public figure announces an end-times date with the same authority that he or she proclaims the gospel, it only serves to validate the skepticism. It is fine to say, “It appears the signs that Jesus gave are unfolding, so I believe His return may be soon.” That sentence is merely a personal opinion and leaves room for error. But when date-setters declare with finality that a certain date or time frame must be the right one, they only invite greater derision, which reflects poorly on the name of Christ.

If God wanted us to know when His Son is returning, He would have made that clear in His Word. As it is, He clearly said that we would not know. All we have to go on is what He revealed to us, and the date is simply not in Scripture. Any speculation is only that. Some get involved in date-setting for the end times in order to appear wise, attract attention, or raise money; others may have less dubious motives. Regardless of why, date-setting for the end times is wrong. We should consider the signs Jesus gave and then live in such a way that we wouldn’t be ashamed if He came this very hour (1 John 2:28).

23 Reasons Date Setters Should Be Fired

The world ended again today, and, frankly, I am getting a little tired of it. After all, the world has ended at least once a year for the past few decades.

Did you miss it? Never mind, it will happen again soon.

That you chuckled just now means you know that failed date setting is a cliche.

This time so-called prophecy experts peddled September 23rd all summer as being when the rapture would happen, the Lord would return, or a planetary collision would occur. Their predictions are all based on reading the signs in star constellations, Bible prophecies, and looking at (fake) news headlines.

Well, the day is here and gone… again. All date-setters need to be fired.

Granted, it is not only religious quacks that predict the end of the world. There is a fair share of secular apocalyptic predictions as well (climate change, aliens, asteroids, worldwide floods, pandemic disease, nuclear annihilation, robots, not lowering the toilet lid), but they are rarely accompanied by precise dates.

These sorts of hopeless scenarios are expected from unbelievers, but date setting most always comes from Christians holding a Bible in ignorance. For shame.

If you are going to speak in ignorance, put down your Bible first. Leave God out of it. ...

23 Reasons Why September 23rd Date Setters Should Get Off the Field

When I say they should be fired. I don’t mean simply stop date-setting. They should be stopped from teaching anything from the Bible (Titus 1:11). A little leaven leaveneth the whole lump (Gal 5:9). Here are 23 reasons why:

Those who set today’s date are now proven to be either liars or Biblically incompetent.
Every date that has been set to date has been wrong. A fable about a boy who cried wolf comes to mind.
Setting dates benefits no one but the teacher in the form of book royalties and popularity.
Getting the date wrong blasphemes the Lord. Blasphemy is attributing things to God that are not true, such as speaking “words from the Lord” that did not come to pass (the 3rd commandment).
When the date fails it undermines the authority and credibility of scripture in the eyes of the simple (believers or not). They do not see the teacher as wrong, but the Bible as wrong. This is unacceptable.
Setting a date perpetuates the spirit of fear among the weak. God has not given us the spirit of fear (2 Tim 1:7).
Date setting often accompanies people who are not of a sound mind to make judgments about what is more or less important in the scripture (2 Tim 1:7), seeking new and secret things, the motes and trivia, rather than the most important messages of the gospel and God’s purpose for the ages.
Date setting in this mystery dispensation always requires Bible misuse in the form of numerology, retranslating, spiritualizing, prooftexting, or applying scripture to us from different dispensations.
Making prophetic predictions based on star alignments is called astrology. It is the stuff of horoscopes and fortune tellers not stewards of God’s word.
Looking for God speaking to us through circumstances, patterns, or the weather is a form of divination forbidden in Israel’s law (Deu 18:10-12).
Pointing out coincidences and speculating that it is God “telling us something” is superstition. The opposite of superstition is faith in the Bible.
Making prophetic pronouncements and getting it wrong is the definition of a false prophet (Deu 18:20).
God said no man would know the day and hour of his return according to prophecy (Matt 25:13), nor has God revealed a date for the rapture in scripture.
The return of the Lord for the church is a mystery, not the subject of prophetic revelation (1 Cor 15:51).
The book of Revelation is not describing events going on today during the ministry of the church.
Our lives are changed by knowing Christ will return, not when he will return. If the date could be known, and you would change how you live as a result, you are living wrong already.
Date setting hype distracts people from the true mission and purpose of the church (1 Tim 2:4; Eph 3:9).
Hope in the Lord’s return, and setting your affection on things above does not include date setting and prophetic predictions about the sun, earth, and stars.
Knowing the date of his return will not help you prepare for it. The only preparation you can do is to trust the work of the Lord Jesus Christ, and grow in the knowledge of his purpose for the church (which does not include calculating dates).
God will not judge the church on a failure to know the time of his return, but he will judge on our knowing and doing his will to see souls saved and saints edified (1 Cor 3:10-11).

There is a prophetic timeline in the Bible, but the body of Christ is not a part of it. Any teacher who thinks so is not qualified to teach the Bible rightly divided, and not worth your ears to hear.
Date setting works against the grace of God, which is offered to all men today for their salvation. The date points to either Christ’s return (when he closes this dispensation of grace) or his judgment on the world (which is wrath not grace). If the delay of the Lord is salvation, should we not be praying he delay for the sake of the salvation of the world?

What’s Worse

It is telling that as the day approaches, descriptions of the actual events that will happen on “the day” will always be diminished, clouded in doublespeak, spiritualized, or moved to a future date. It’s almost as if the teachers themselves are not certain of the very thing they teach once the rubber meets the road.

The worst part of it all is after the date printed in millions of books and seen by millions of viewers is marked off the calendar with no consequence, the audience gives the teacher a free pass, a right to be wrong, and the cycle of abusing the scripture repeats.

I don’t know what’s worse: a teacher who doesn’t believe what he is teaching, or those sitting under him that continue to listen to his claptrap.

It’s time to stop subsidizing date setters and those who encourage them. Their date setting betrays their supposed judgment and understanding of God’s word. It might help us remember the poor judgment of these so-called experts if they branded their false dates across their forehead, so when they are talking we remember why we should not listen.

At the very least they should be ashamed and educated about how to study (2 Tim 2:15). Teachers should be warning against the errors of end of the world date-setting, not participating in it.

But they will never stop until you stop listening to them. Unsubscribe from their Youtube channels, turn their books into kitty litter, and avoid them (Rom 16:17; Titus 1:11).

Date Setting is Not What Dispensational Bible Belief Teaches

Date setting is not a ministry area for the dispensational Bible believing literalist. If someone is setting dates, they are not doing the Lord’s ministry today.

It doesn’t matter if they claim to teach the Bible rightly divided. When they started date-setting, they submitted their resignation and have become more of a hurt than a help to the body of Christ.

It doesn’t matter if they found a secret Bible code that purportedly explains the events of 9/11, the past four presidents, and the mole on your back. Explaining past events is not prophecy, and it takes just as much skill as finding shapes in the clouds. It is certainly not making all men see the mystery of Christ.

I understand the wickedness and sin that is in the world; the desire to see things made right (judgment); and the sure hope that we, as Christians, have in the return of the Lord Jesus Christ (i.e the rapture), but date setting will not make it happen.

Next time someone sets a date for the end of the world, note that man, fire the teacher. Let it be God’s job. It is not yours to fill.

Because, besides looking foolish, sign-seekers and date-setters can also do damage to people’s faith and to the cause of Christ. How so? When these dates come and go and the “fulfillments” don’t pan out, weak believers, unbelievers, skeptics, critics, and scoffers might conclude one of two things: 1) Christianity and the Bible are utterly untrustworthy, legitimately leading to the question, “What else does the Bible teach that isn’t really true?” Or, more likely, 2) The Bible is hopelessly ambiguous, because if careful interpreters can wrongly read so many different current events into it, then Scripture can apparently be interpreted to say anything people want it to say. In either case, nothing good comes from repeatedly failed date-setting and sign-seeking. Rather, those who engage in this dangerous sport make authentic, Bible-believing Christians look bad, as scoffers lump us all together and regard us as misguided, brainless zealots.

Jesus, Paul, Peter, and the entire early church believed that nobody can calculate or know the hour, day, year, or even season of Christ’s return. Jesus said, “But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father alone” (Matt. 24:36). To clarify that not even the disciples could have known, Jesus added, “Therefore be on the alert, for you do not know which day your Lord is coming” (Matt. 24:42). And to underscore the fact that even those who would believe in subsequent generations could not know the time of Christ’s return, Jesus said, “Take heed, keep on the alert; for you do not know when the appointed time will come. . . . What I say to you I say to all, ‘Be on the alert’” (Mark 13:33, 37).

Later the apostle Paul reiterated this teaching that nobody knows the day or the hour but that all believers of every generation must remain alert and ready for judgment to come at any moment. He wrote, “Now as to the times and the epochs, brethren, you have no need of anything to be written to you. For you yourselves know full well that the day of the Lord will come just like a thief in the night” (1 Thess. 5:1–2). Believers, however, will not be overtaken by the suddenness of this coming (5:4), not because they will know the times, epochs, year, and day, but because they will be ready for Christ’s return regardless of when it occurs! Later the apostle Peter himself echoes this same thought: “But the day of the Lord will come like a thief” (2 Pet. 3:10, emphasizing the suddenness of the coming of Christ in judgment.

Finally, an early Christian writing called the Didache (A.D. 50–70), used for instruction of new Gentile believers in Christ, included a brief account of Christian expectations of the end times. The author of that text wrote, “Watch over your life: do not let your lamps go out, and do not be unprepared, but be ready, for you do not know the hour when our Lord is coming” (Didache 16.1). Thus, the pattern of teaching in the early orthodox church was the same as that of Jesus and the apostles: we do not know (and cannot know) the time of Christ’s return. It could happen in their lifetime as well as ours. Therefore, we must be ready for it every day and every moment of our lives.

Yet these facts of Christian faith don’t stop those high-risk gamblers playing the “Dating Game.” Instead, they suggest that these warnings are for unbelievers, or that God has chosen to progressively illuminate His church to discover the secret knowledge long hidden in Scripture, or they quote passages like Amos 3:7, concluding that God would never suddenly judge the world without adequate warning.

Bible-believing Christians must all make a conscious decision to resist two perennial errors with regard to end-times expectations. First, we must ban, shun, and reject those who play the “Dating Game.” Setting a date for the return of Christ or some other end-time event(s) is completely unacceptable. It was unacceptable in the first century. It is unacceptable in the twenty-first century. We must exercise a policy of “ZERO TOLERANCE” for this unwise and borderline blasphemous practice.

Second, we must also inoculate ourselves against the much more common disease of “This-is-that-itis,” which is the common practice of interpreting the Bible’s prophecies in light of current events and presumptuously concluding (or at least hypothesizing) that our generation must be the last generation…or this day must be the date of the rapture. This was unacceptable in the first century. It is unacceptable in the twenty-first. We simply cannot know the hour, day, week, month, year, decade, or generation. Christ could come in our lifetime. Or He could come in a thousand years.

The Revelation 12 prophecy proponents are guilty of both Sign-Seeking and Date-Setting.

Their astrallegory must be rejected because only God knows when Christ will return, and He’s not telling.
