Random power outage in Seattle
I have a friend that texted me about power out in the neighborhood he is in. Now It's on the local news. This is not weather related. It's just cloudy, light winds and in the 50's out. Seattle PUD doesn't know why at the moment. The local news, live on TV says it's growing and 2 substations are off line. So fat, as of 6:30pm almost 30k w/o power.

If 2 substations are out then there must be a transmission line down. It should be pretty straightforward to fix. Expect the lights to be back on in the 5-8 hour range if that is the case. If you get any more info at all post it here.
I work on powerlines. I'm expecting a mass outage just like everyone else here but I want to be very careful with analysis.

Friend just texted again. Somone he knows told him no power in Revenna Park area. Yet the news and Seattle PUD site says the power is on there. Could be spreading.

Re: Random power outage in Seattle
Wow, really? Our power used to go out a couple times a week. Thankfully now it's only a couple times a month. We are evidently in an area that isn't important enough to get power up fast either. One time the power went out for 4 days, others a couple blocks away had theirs back on in the first day.

At least Seattle isn't too cold (lived there for a few years).

Thank you for the pin. I'm not actually in the City. But I have a few friends that are. But, I'm just south. So, I should go fix dinner, just in case.

Re: Random power outage in Seattle
The simplest way to explain it is the higher the wires affected on the pole, the more people will be out. Transmission lines are at the top. They feed power to the substations. If multiple subs are out then it's most likely a transmission line that is the problem. Think of them as a backbone that supports the grid. They run down the middle and supply power to each of the substations they pass.
It could be a transmission structure down but with no bad weather in the area it isn't very likely. Not that it can't happen.

odd, Im in Missouri, and we never lose power here unless we have a major Ice Storm. Our Lights have been flickering on and off all day.

If it does then it is scripted. There is absolutely no reason it should be widespread.
What all of us are prepping for here will happen in an instant. There won't be any warning at all. If it happens, the lights will just go out and there won't be any news of it coming back.
That is what I'm expecting anyway

Number of Outages: 15 Estimated Customers Affected: 27668

From the link provided above.

Wonder what the cause is. Remember that the estimated customers affected is the number of bills they send out, not the people involved. Bascially, each house or business equals one customer affected.

Then head to the grocery store for some canned goods, batteries and top-off your vehicle's tank on the way back home.
