Re: Toil Is Meaningless
I think this forum contributes to people's low feelings. I've noticed I feel depressed after reading threads here.

None the less, I don't toil for my efforts to be passed on to those who follow me, if I toil, I toil for myself. I find my own meaning.

I do not sit around waiting for someone else, or something else to give me meaning. I find it within myself, and try to make sense of the world around me.

In the end, isn't everything really just meaningless. We are alive but a short time here. When we're gone, we're gone.
 Quoting: deanoZXT

If you believe that, then yes everything is ultimately meaningless. Most people don't believe that though. Even science is starting to explore the idea that consciousness may be non-local and may continue in some form after physical death.

"Life is a Journey, not a Destination" "Stop and smell the Roses". Life is a test from my understanding. The path is narrow.

I don't have answers and struggle OP. I am a christian women and I believe but the Satan has my flesh in his hooks with alcohol. It's so hard for me.

Life is depressing for the most part. You work hard for what, shelter, heat, water, food and see no one you love.
 Quoting: >>Kate<<

I am depressed right now as well. Nothing in this life truly has any meaning. It's very clear. Our rewards are in heaven not on earth.
 Quoting: CJStryker

I do everything for that ONE or TWO or maybe Three times if lucky a year our family gets all together. All the work year round for maybe 8-10 days together total. Serious!
 Quoting: >>Kate<<

Be thankful you have 8 or 10 days a year. As for me, I am thankful for work. To be able to toil, play, explore, and to be able to feel the pleasure and pain in all of it. Work can be grueling sure, and it can be many other things at the same time. As for the point in all of this, I dunno, to be, just to be. An old friend told me long ago " We are human beings not human doings, so concentrate more on how to be, and less on how to do". I think to expand on that I would add when we consider others, what we should ask ourselves is what are they feeling that is how they are being, not what they are doing. It's just a journey, try to enjoy the ride, and be thankful you got a ticket! Peace

I agree that there are some threads that could make people feel low, both reality and troll in nature. But also some that should lift one's spirits up as well.

If someone is not in the right mind set to deal with the threads that may make them feel worse, they should try to stay away from them, and read more of the ones that are uplifting in nature.

Hope everyone has a wonderful Sunday :)

Ecclesiastes 2:17-26 (NIV)

17 So I hated life, because the work that is done under the sun was grievous to me. All of it is meaningless, a chasing after the wind. 18 I hated all the things I had toiled for under the sun, because I must leave them to the one who comes after me. 19 And who knows whether he will be a wise man or a fool? Yet he will have control over all the work into which I have poured my effort and skill under the sun. This too is meaningless. 20 So my heart began to despair over all my toilsome labor under the sun. 21 For a man may do his work with wisdom, knowledge and skill, and then he must leave all he owns to someone who has not worked for it. This too is meaningless and a great misfortune. 22 What does a man get for all the toil and anxious striving with which he labors under the sun? 23 All his days his work is pain and grief; even at night his mind does not rest. This too is meaningless. 24 A man can do nothing better than to eat and drink and find satisfaction in his work. This too, I see, is from the hand of God, 25 for without him, who can eat or find enjoyment? 26 To the man who pleases him, God gives wisdom, knowledge and happiness, but to the sinner he gives the task of gathering and storing up wealth to hand it over to the one who pleases God. This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.
 Quoting: CJStryker

Why is it only 3 years in a relationship? I can't advice too much how it works but I'm into 26 years. It's been up, down, sideways and shit everywhere. Every persons a mess, to me when you find someone, you have to love them like your family. Better or worse, sickness and heath, richer or poor. It pays off I believe.

Here's our wedding song.

PS: we married 20 years ago, lived together 6.
 Quoting: >>Kate<<

I'm not sure why. I just feel uneasy around that time. But probably it's because I'm a afraid to have children. It is really, really hard to find a woman, who long term doesn't want children.

He said this right before that

Then I turned my thoughts to consider wisdom,
and also madness and folly.
What more can the king’s successor do
than what has already been done?
13 I saw that wisdom is better than folly,
just as light is better than darkness.
14 The wise have eyes in their heads,
while the fool walks in the darkness;
but I came to realize
that the same fate overtakes them both.
15 Then I said to myself,

“The fate of the fool will overtake me also.
What then do I gain by being wise?”
I said to myself,
“This too is meaningless.”
16 For the wise, like the fool, will not be long remembered;
the days have already come when both have been forgotten.
Like the fool, the wise too must die!

Wow, guess my heart knows this cause I decided to come back to ny to keep my family together. Lot of progressives and growing but from pa prepped to ny and not Is scary but living in the spirit is priceless,,, family is priceless.

Highfive. Lot of depressed people on here tonight. Go figure. Lately it has become worse for me, I'm almost paralyzed with it today.

I am trying to be grateful for what I have, but I am just so tired. So tired of the struggle, the pain. I think I have wanted to quit since I was a child.

What I love and seek most is just sleep, but tonight that evades me. How ironic that in many cases the more depressed one becomes, the more sleep becomes disturbed. Like that last little bit of relief has to be snatched away.

Great world.

I am so sorry. I also understand as I have been feeling the same for a while. Almost like a shadow of depression is chasing you and you have to run real fast or it will get you bad. What is going on? I have had a really hard life, however this depression almost makes it hard to breath sometimes. I did realize that part of it was because I no longer believed in many of the foundation stones that I had always believed in to see me through.

Question
Why do people say "God rest his soul" if they believe the soul lives on in heaven after death? Sounds like a contradiction to me....

It's no contradiction if when one dies, that one falls asleep in death as Jesus taught when his friend Lazarus died before resurrecting him

Thanks, actually I believe that when people die they are "conscious of nothing" and awaiting resurrection, as the bible says. I just thought it would be interesting to raise this question.

I have been paralyzed with depression, too. How could we not be depressed with the things that are happening around us?

And what can we do about it?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 8925069

Yes, yes this is how I've felt a majority of my life, and still do on odd days, but I'm beginning to realize something lately...(unless one has been diagnosed with a chemical imbalance such as clinical chronic depression) it really is a CHOICE to be happy. I had convinced myself that life sucks, that being negative, being depressed, was the only legitimate and honest emotion to have when faced with the realities of life. But why am I choosing to be miserable when I can just as easily choose to be happy? Who does it hurt when I'm in a negative, pessimistic state of mind? Myself. And anyone around me. We must live this life for there is no alternative so why not make it easier on ourselves. We really can change our thought patterns if we want to. But it does take an awakening. And I'm not altogether sure that one can force the awakening. For me, it came of its own accord.
