Fifty years ago when those hippies were experimenting with drugs, I knew this was gonna happen.

Now all this hippy bullshit is spreading like a disease. It laid dormant until President Clinton was elected, then he got blowed, and it went back into dormancy.

Next Bush arrived and all hell began to break loose until Bush got re-elected.

Why am I not surprised? So now it's racist to want your students to have good grammar and be able to communicate well enough to succeed in life?

When I see bad grammar I assume that the person who wrote it is uneducated. It may not be true of course but that's the impression most people get.

I was constantly corrected by teachers, family for making grammar mistakes in writing and speaking and I'm thankful that I can at least string a coherent sentence together. Why would someone want to appear dumb?

I can see this professor throwing his hands up in disgust and quitting.

This is what happens when you put quotas in schools. It allows the half retarded students to get into college. This, in turn, ruins college for the truly intelligent students.

I was going to draw a wry comparison between a very successful chordate animal group, which has lost its nervous system through evolution, and these students.

But instead of being so smug and negative, I'll only suggest that every last one of the students should touch-type what they see on a website (not a hip-hip website), a book or newspaper for 4 hours a day until their vocabulary exceeds the professor's.

Nitpicking is really irks me.

As in the thread from about a week ago where the principal of a middle (???) school in the PNW labeled PB&J racist. I guess those students that pass through that school will be conditioned well for this professor to teach when they graduate the public skool system and enter their college years.

I finished reading both Booker T. Washington and Frederick Douglass' autobiographies recently. Both former slaves that TAUGHT THEMSELVES how to read and write, both without any formal education, both becoming beautifully profound writers. Both proffered that the best and easiest way to keep the black masses in a continued funk of economic and social ignorance was to ensure that they were not literate. I guess both they and MLK were racists also.

The OP link doesn't make this a black / white issue, and a UCLA article says there were about 25 graduate students of color participating. A photo shows about 9 of them, and they appear to be white Hispanics, except for an Asian, a black and a white. Notably, the white appears to be taking a cell phone camera picture, while the black is the only one actually reading an apparent handout/flyer, which several of the grad school students are holding.

The article also provides the names of the organizers and participants, and they look to me like Spanish-origin names.

In California universities, racial affirmative action is forbidden by state law, and there are not many blacks in the UC schools, especially at the graduate level, relative to many other states.

There is no irony that the Democrat party in the Old South made a point of keeping blacks uneducated as to more easily control them. In that respect, very little has changed in this country over the past 200 years. The Democrat Party still presides over failing schools, failing policies, failing communities and has stoked the social chaos that has led to the virtual evaporation of the black family. The yoke has just been transferred from the plantation slavemaster to the politician and the university academic, who now achieve the same sinister ends via pseudo-benevolent mechanisms such as Affirmative Action and the lowering of social and academic standards. The result is the same. A significant percentage of America's black population STILL finds itself shackled, wanting and indebted to those who are most responsible for the degradation of their condition. It is a disgrace. NOTHING will improve in the black community until their self-anointed "protectors" cast aside the soft racism of low expectations and begin to hold blacks accountable to the SAME social and academic standards as the rest of society.
