(OP) User ID: 10958957 Canada 12/13/2013 12:26 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | How about the parents are so concerned with chasing and spending money that their kids are fuuuuucked? Quoting: Anonymous Coward 30306701 The whole thing is just fucked up. How can being too wealthy be used as a defense for driving drunk and killing four people. It doesn't even make sense. There are massive media campaigns against drunk driving for starters, so anyone claiming not to know it is wrong is either lying, stupid or both. Taking a life I think most people know is fundamentally wrong, so if that is is question then maybe a straight jacket and a padded room are in order. — read for knowledge, not answers. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 51416021 Simple solution is to rectify the problem. He is a Minor, His Parents should lose AT LEAST 50% of their wealth which should then go to the Families of the four people he killed. THEN he can have is probation. — read for knowledge, not answers. |

Seriously? Quoting: amachiavellian It was just used in a case where a 16 y/o killed four people while driving drunk. OMFG. Stop the Planet, I want the fuck off ... December 13, 2013 (HOUSTON) -- ''Affluenza,'' the affliction cited by a psychologist to argue that a North Texas teenager from a wealthy family should not be sent to prison for killing four pedestrians while driving drunk, is not a recognized diagnosis and should not be used to justify bad behavior, experts said Thursday. Quoting: [link to abclocal.go.com] A judge's decision to give 16-year-old Ethan Couch 10 years of probation for the fatal accident sparked outrage from relatives of those killed and has led to questions about the defense strategy. A psychologist testified in Couch's trial in a Fort Worth juvenile court that as a result of "affluenza," the boy should not receive the maximum 20-year prison sentence prosecutors were seeking. The term "affluenza" was popularized in the late 1990s by Jessie O'Neill, the granddaughter of a past president of General Motors, when she wrote the book "The Golden Ghetto: The Psychology of Affluence." It's since been used to describe a condition in which children - generally from richer families - have a sense of entitlement, are irresponsible, make excuses for poor behavior, and sometimes dabble in drugs and alcohol, explained Dr. Gary Buffone, a Jacksonville, Fla., psychologist who does family wealth advising. I think most politicians suffer from this as they don't know right from wrong! 5* and pin suggest Last Edited by Nostril Domus on 12/13/2013 12:45 PM |

I dunno. I believe it's a rather ingenious thing to do, to "diagnose" this kid with "affluenza." See, the psychiatrist knows already that with the money the family has, the best attorney will be hired, who would probably get the kid off Scott free based on a technicality or some other loop hole for such scum. Instead, though, he already plants the seed that this kid has a condition, which will require "treatment." It is far more likely that with such a diagnosis, the judge will pass a verdict in agreement with the psychiatrist and THIS will ultimately be the kids time to serve. I dunno.. do I feel the kid should burn (we all know plenty of 16 year olds have been tried as adults already and this kid is no exception -- however, what's different I believe is the purported net worth of this kids family compared to most of the other 16 year olds we'd read about), of course I do. But, we all know, if given enough money to throw at a really "good" scum lawyer, well. Gotta think outside the box on this one. I think it's pure genius. WhiskeyEchoFoxtrot |

I thought because we read so often how thug "x" is not "guilty" because of his deprived up-bringing that this was just a spoof of that mentality... I honestly laughed until I realized it was a serious story. There has to be some kind of review of this stupid judge and I would examine her bank accounts with a magnifying glass and a microscope. Her judgment is outrageous and what a slap at the victims' families. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 48143433 United States 12/13/2013 03:20 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I can't wait for the defense of this individual to defend the parents in this case because they basically said the parents are a fault for the child and if that is the case, the parents should be held for negligence in this case and will probably go bankrupt. If I were the surviving family members, I'd sue for everything, including the family pets, gold fish, a child's book...everything. I'd ask for an accounting of everything they own and sue for it all. I'd leave them so poor they'd wish their child was in jail for life. |
