Battlestar Galactica being just that.

It was based on the (then) novel and exciting premise that mankind was placed on Earth by spacefarers, a notion popularized by the book "Chariots of the Gods" published in 1968.

The helmets were designed to look like the heads of Pharaohs, the "Viper" ships were to be like a sarcophagus. That's also why all of the colonial planets were named after signs of the zodiac.

The series had nowhere to go, script-wise, a problem that had plagued the original Star Trek series writers, and Battlestar was cancelled. A huge outpouring from fans (including several suicides) convinced the network to bring it back. The 1980 season was to focus on time travel, not space travel, in order to save on special effects costs. Long story made short, the fleet actually found present day (1980) Earth, and the antagonist became a mutineer who jumped back in time to mess with Earth history, with his intent to raise an Earth fleet to defeat the Cylons.

It sucked. And the series was cancelled for good.
