User ID: 43799730 United States 12/16/2013 08:37 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Im pretty sure its a common occurrence, especially here in Canada, & I'm assuming it has something to do with the low temps and ice in atmosphere.. but I was wondering if anyone on GLP can give me some answers: I'm looking out my window and seeing a massive 'halo' like circle consuming 1/3 of the night sky with the moon in the dead center, can anyone explain this? Haven't been able to get a picture, too dark, but the moon is so bright its near impossible to miss by the naked eye. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 33230366 Should mention its about -25C with clear skies. Really, really cool - wish I could get a decent picture. When the moon has an circle around it, it is called the halo effect. This is merely an optical illusion. When there are ice crystals in the upper atmosphere they reflect the light from the moon causing the ring that you see around it. |
