Question for friend about unknown discharged mortgage (surprise to them)
I have a friend who filed for bankruptcy chapter 7 a few years ago. They thought the judge reaffirmed their mortgage as they did not want to lose their home (no equity in it. Well a year later after they were discharged from bankruptcy, they find out their lawyer dropped the ball and did not get the reaffirmation papers to the judge during the hearing. So the judge discharged all of their debt including the mortgage.

So what happens now? These people have been paying their mortgage on time, and now they find out this? What can they do about this? They heard they can re-open the bankruptcy, but they do not have the money to do so since they still are paying back the bankruptcy lawyer.

Seems you answered your own question.
Each time a person stands for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he or she sends forth a tiny ripple of hope. And crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring, those ripples build a current that can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance. Few are willing to embrace the disapproval of their fellows, the censure of their colleagues, the wrath of their society. Moral courage is a rarer commodity than bravery in battle or great intelligence. Yet it is the one essential vital quality for those who seek to change a world that yields most painfully to change. Was just trying to get feedback from others who have been through this. They are worried now that they could lose their home if they stay in it for a few years building up equity, then the bank might have leverage to take the home.

They are still in the home. The bank is still taking their money in mortgage payments.
