From a short search on this amazing spice, it is in short supply and hard to get. Just FYI

You can order it here:

[link to www.sfherb.com]

Anise Star, Standard, one pound, $7.20

it is light in weight, a pound is a good amount, about 8 cups.
Description says "many stars broken, item is not select whole".

I've ordered from San Francisco Herb a lot over the years, an excellent company to do business with, one of the best of many places I've bought from online.

Another place to try is Monterey Bay Spice company

[link to www.herbco.com]

Theirs is the whole stuff, one pound 7.00, 1/4 lb 2.80

Ahhh, no wonder I feel so good at Christmas! The Anise is used in our Pfferfernusse cookies! (Peppernut) for after our relatives left the old country. Now I have a reason to make several more batches.

Though, beware, it is getting harder and harder to actually find the seeds, easier to find the extract now.

Anise seed is different than Star Anise but it is not hard to find either, at least not online, see the two suppliers I posted above.

I returned home last night after being hospitalized for almost a week with pneumonia like symptoms--shortness of breath-very very serious breathing problems, extreme fatigue, but NO fever!! But ALL of the tests (chest xrays, ct scan, Cbc, etc etc) came in negative for pneumonia and/or Influenza.
There were three other cases in the same floor as my self, with identical symptoms. I was discharged withOUT a definitive diagnosis.
I'm beginning to think I have whatever is going on across Texas and the US.
I will be buying star anise today!
Thank you very much for posting this info.

Hey I hope you feel better soon!

Raw garlic, pressed into olive oil and eaten immediately on a salad or mixed into soup or other food, as much as you can, would be good to try.

Also horseradish, mixed with fresh lemon juice, you can eat that on crackers or cut up raw vegetables with hummous or other dip.

Those are both very good for respiratory trouble and be sure to take vitamins, esp. Vitamin C, you also need magnesium, get a good form, not magnesium oxide, that's the common one and it's no good.

Vitamin D, you can load up on very high doses of that for a couple of weeks, and vitamin A too.

Tamiflu is made directly from the spice STAR ANISE. This spice is an anti-viral, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and fights cancer.

I told a few friends about Star Anise and they were surprised to find that Tamiflu is basically made from a spice from southern China.
[link to healthyeating.sfgate.com]

Star anise comes by its name honestly, with its star shape and a licorice taste similar to regular anise, only stronger. Star anise is the seed pod of an evergreen tree (Illicium Verum) grown in southwestern China and Japan. It is about one inch high with eight segments and a dark brown rust color.

Medical Uses of Star Anise In traditional Chinese medicine, star anise is prescribed as a digestive aid and to help cure colic in babies. More recently, Shikimic Acid, extracted from star anise, is one of the chief ingredients in the antiviral Tamiflu drug used to fight avian influenza. When Tamiflu first came out I got some Star Anise and put it in an air tight container. It's kept pretty good. I made my Grandma's Anise Biscotti recipe with ground star anise and it was good. Simple biscotti with walnuts or macnuts. Makes a good and easy way to get the herb onboard.
I like this tea recipe posted here. I'll try it.
Washing your hands, or using an antiseptic wipe, whenever you are touching doorknobs at the clinic or anywhere really, during flu season is one of the best ways to protect yourself. (Turn the handle at the Dr. Office with a tissue or wipe, men use a hanky.) And at the drug store, pushing those baskets around, grab an ad paper and wrap it around the handle.....Use your wits and wash before you eat when you are out and as soon as you get home. Protect yourself during flu season.tomato

I already started almost all the suggestions you wrote-except the horseradish. (I have an ulcer so stomach cant handle it)
Since getting home last night, I've also drank several cups of tea with cinnamon and honey and ginger.
Plus I made a concoction of Apple Cider Vinegar (with the mother) and honey. Came home from hospital feeling so sick, for a moment I thought I should turn around and go back but I decided to fight this crap on my own and I am starting to feel better already.

Will you tell a little bit more about this ? I have reactive arthritis and was looking for natural ways to boost my immunity to stave off what triggers my flare ups (that last 3+ months)

Thanks- will be looking for these ingredients today.

I have arthritis too, in my knees, ankles and wrists...didnt use to but it seems to have developed over past couple years.

Try THIS:
[link to immunityfoods.com] This strong, warm, delicious beverage produces an immediate feeling of wellbeing, and is highly beneficial to anyone suffering from arthritis, colds and flu, kidney infection/malfunction - or as a general all-purpose tonic.
1 - 2 tablepoons grated or sliced ginger root
2 cups orange juice concentrate
4-5 cloves -
2 cinnamon sticks -
6-8 star anise pods
- brown or raw sugar to taste
Boil all the ingredients together for 10-15 minutes, strain and enjoy hot or cold.

Every time I start feeling blah and tired like I'm about to get sick, I go to the local mom and pop, hole in the wall, don't really want to know what goes on in the kitchen Asian restaurant for a soup they make. It has star anise in it. By the next day, I feel 100 times better. I actually bought some star anise this winter to try to make my own. I firmly believe there is something to it.

What you mention is not the same Star Anise.

[link to en.wikipedia.org]
...Japanese star anise (Illicium anisatum), a similar tree, is highly toxic and inedible; in Japan it has instead been burned as incense. Cases of illness, including "serious neurological effects, such as seizures", reported after using star anise tea may be a result of using this species. Japanese star anise contains anisatin, which causes severe inflammation of the kidneys, urinary tract and digestive organs. The toxicity of Illicium anisatum, also known as Shikimi, is caused by its containing potent neurotoxins (anisatin, neoanisatin, and pseudoanisatin), due to their activity as non-competitive antagonists of GABA receptors.[
