New Years Charity Challenge!
I want to challenge all of you here.

Many people want and wish they could help those less fortunate. I know there are many people with their hearts in the right place that just feel like they don't have the means to help out.

Well, here is the challenge for 2014.

Most of us, even those who make little money, or are on government assistance, here in America, have luxeries. We have bills every month that are not necessities.

I challenge everyone, to pick a luxery they have, be it netflix, Gamefly, eating out at restraunts, switch from going to the movies once a week to once a month, alcohol, tobacco, drugs if that's your thing.

Then use that money you have just saved, to put towards a charity every month. Whatever charity you like. Your 10-20 dollars a month could mean life for a hungry kid. Clean water for a needy family, saving an abused animal....etc etc. Great things can come from just a little bit.

Please think about it. Ask yourself if you would rather watch another netflix movie you have seen 15 times already, or offer a starving child a meal, kid with cancer a place to stay near the hospital during treatmen......

Just think about all the positive change we could see if we all did this.

God Bless you all who take up this challenge!

Re: New Years Charity Challenge!
Good for you!!

What I would love to see is everyone who smokes cutting down the purchase of cigarettes by at least half and then donating at least some of the money saved to the charity of their choice. Good for the smokers and good for the charities!

Also, why don't grocery stores have a food donation box or tub for the needy going year round? If everyone in the country would donate just one box or can of food a week, I'm sure that would make a big difference! And, again -- a win-win-win all around! Also, many times I have food near the expiration dates that I will just end up throwing away because there isn't a food bank near where I live. I would much rather give the food that I know I won't use before it expires to a food bank!

Some good ideas there.

We have a food bank here, they drop off a bag once a week, we fill it and leave it on our porch and they pick it up on saturday and drop us off a new bag.

Seems like it would be a pretty simple charity to start.....

No job right now, but I'm going to take your idea to heart. My unemployment is ending, but I will have enough food. Our family still has ONE job. Two weddings and a baby coming this year. As I build some for them - I will put some back for those that are less fortunate. I always did better when i gave - so it comes back in karma or whatever. God Bless and Happy New Year.

Awesome!

I really think, no matter what our own personal situation, we can always help those less fortunate than we are.

It doesn't necessarily have to be monetarily. You can donate time as well.

Okay, you inspired me. I just sent the following e-mail [italics added] to the major foodbank distribution center to where I live. (I edited out the identifying info.)

Dear [name]:

I checked your website for food banks, and could find none close to where I live and shop [LOCATION given]. I would like to donate food year-round, so do you know of any grocery stores near there that have donation tubs/boxes year-round?

Thanks in advance for your reply.

P.S. Why don't ALL the major grocery stores and [NAME OF FOOD DISTRIBUTION CENTER] have donation tubs year-round? I would think it would be a win-win for all concerned -- the food banks, the stores, the givers, and the receivers. Although I live in a fairly affluent area, I would think there are many people like me who would give more if it was more convenient to do so.

I'll see what kind of reply I receive!

You're right. Salaries for charity managers and executives are often outrageous. The problem, though, is that food banks can get more food with money. For example, I volunteered for a food bank, and a big box (about an 18" cube) holding about $50.00 worth of food only cost the food bank about $4.00, if I remember correctly -- and the salaries have to come from somewhere, even though they are subsidized from local, state, and federal government. (Or at least that was the case with the one I worked at.)

Anyway, before you give to ANY charity, check to see how much goes for "administrative costs." It is a real eye-opener!

OP should start listing charities.

Also make sure it's not charities where there's some criminal fat cat that takes the first million bucks before anything goes to help, it need to be charities that don't take the money for themselves, that work for free.

Did you know that even homeless people qualify for food stamps? And that they don't need to have a home address? Frankly there is no good reason that anyone has to go hungry in America...I just don't understand the whole food pantry thingy...unless you are an illegal alien of course and just weren't able to apply for that EBT card...or you are selling your benefit for drugs, smokes, etc. and then getting your groceries from the food banks.

Help your local ASPCA - every state chapter has to come up with their own funding somehow. Then, your local Animal Defense League and whatever other private shelters you know of in your own area. That way, you know what's going on. I already know what a fine researcher you are; you'd have no trouble finding the most worthy of shelters in your own area. Your veterinarian might have a list of shelters on hand, since some of the good ones donate time for free spaying and neutering.

This by the way, is free - you just go over there and 'click' to help feed animals in shelters. There is also a store if you want to buy things and help more but it's not necessary. I'm generally stone broke the second half of the month - what I put aside for prepping stays untouched - but I do this every day, just to be doing something for them.

You're right about your whole post, but I can answer your question about the "whole food pantry thing" based on my experience volunteering at a food bank. Before I do, though, I will say that there were PLENTY of people who just go to food banks for "extra" or for the reasons you listed, and though they aren't needy at all. The food bank I worked asked for nothing but I.D. (because our "clients" could only go there once a month).

But, that being said, there are many "decent" U.S. citizens truly do need to go to a food bank is because of one or more of the following reasons: (1) they are unemployed (or under-employed) and haven't yet gotten into "the system", (2) they are just "short" financially for a short time due to an unexpected financial emergency (such as needing to get their car fixed), and (3) they don't have enough to eat or to feed their kids, but they don't WANT to go on welfare of any kind.

Happy New Year!
