Legally Changing My Name to Lucifer - Social Ramifications?
Hello GLP!
I have decided that my given name is quite common and boring, and I want to change my name to something that sounds beautiful to me; so, I have decided on something far less common: Lucifer.

Now, before making assumptions: I am not a devil worshiper, nor do I fit into that camp. What are your thoughts on this name change? What might be the social ramifications?

Why I love this name:

First, the sound of the name itself, Lucifer, flows off the tongue like silk in its beauty.

Next, being the Latin word for light-bearer and the "morning star" (aka Venus) speaks a lot about who I am. It is one of the most beautiful things to bring light into people's lives.

Finally, while it is commonly misunderstood as the name of a certain fallen angel, there is absolutely no Biblical reference to this other than a taunt to a Babylonian king and some other metaphors in the pseutopigrapha.

In fact, Jesus Christ is referred to using this latin translation when being called-- even in an Easter Mass-- as Lucifer, the bright and Morning Star.

What on earth could be more beautiful?

Do you see what I see in this beautiful name?

Maybe you could go by Luc. Sort of like Jean-Luc Picard, except you're exceptionally weird and lonely.

I knew a guy who legally changed his name to something a little unconventional. Before he legally changed it, he called himself Tannith. For the sake of his privacy I will not give his last name. I really liked him. He got me into playing guitar. After a while it was just like Bruce or John.

Lucifer is a different story. You will definitely be judged by many. Of that I am sure. You have to weigh it for yourself. Have you thought of maybe changing your middle name? People fear what they do not understand, and while I think I understand why you like the name it could make things difficult for you when you need services from strangers, i.e. DMV, Police, utilities, etc. (no prostitards I am not talking about hookers and whatnot LOL)

But if you opened a comic or new age book store you could really help your business. LOL!
All this has happened before, and will happen again.

I spent the last two hours thinking about your dilemma. I made a pro's and con's list and emailed it to one of my professors. We got on conference call with some folk's from his church and the only downside that we could all formulate is that some folks might nickname you "Lucy".

Hope that does not dissuade you from your dream.

Hope that helps. Wish I had more time to work on for you.

Yes, for most who know me, it will likely become normal over time like Bruce or John. . .

But, to be honest, I'm not sure how wide-ranging the judging reactions would be... Would most people even know what it means, or have a connection with the mythologies that made people suspicious of this name?

For a number of reasons, I have already been under the scrutiny and judgement of the religious right for many years of my life. So, this kind of thing would be nothing new to me...

But, there is a practical consideration you bring up- The potential judgement from police, utility workers, DMV, etc would make things a little bit harder if people actually react badly. Do you think this would translate to malicious behavior? Or just weird looks, etc?

Peace.

Heya!

Two hours? I just posted this. :P Have you been considering changing your name too? Or someone else recently?

...I thought of that drawback- being called Lucy is kinda a silly prospect... I'd just have to make sure people don't use that. People from your church must be pretty open-minded. lol

I mean listen to the ring of it: Lucifer
it just oozes fairy.

Future ramifications will not be good, but temporary I don't think you will have much problems if you stick in the high satanic areas of USA, like Hollyweird, San Fransicko, Las Weirdas, Miarsemi, New Whoreleans and places like that.

But still that name dude, it's like asking to be picked on for being a fairy.

Actually, it's not. While the beautiful meaning and sound of the name still rings true, who wouldn't want to add to their motivations more good sex, gay or straight?

While, it's just a beautiful name, plenty of people who have been disenfranchised by the religious establishment would connect with this on another level too.

I had a friend I hung out with when I was in the Army who was big into Wicca. He wore several pentagrams all of the time when off duty. Occasionally he got reactions from people ranging from fear to being offended. A lot of people really didn't care and some even showed their support. The one thing that surprised him the most was how many Christians, or people who identified with Christianity were out there. Obviously they are not going to be super-open minded when it comes to something associated with the occult. Lucifer definitely falls into that category.

Another thing I would point out to you would be employment. If someone saw the name Lucifer in a stack of applications do you feel strongly enough about naming yourself this to potentially not be considered for a job (unless of course you are applying to the new age bookstore)?

As far as the mythology goes, I think if you asked 10 people the first name that pops in their mind after hearing Lucifer would be Satan. I also think a lot of people have a lot of negative feelings toward that name.

I am all about individuality, but I really think you should consider the fact you will certainly be creating battles for yourself that you may not want or need.
All this has happened before, and will happen again.
