The most bandwidth the satelite companies give you is 20gb. After that they slow you way down. Satelite internet is not for streaming or gaming.

show her your HIGHEST bill and ask for half.. and ea month there after. of the highest bill. if theres lower bills in between that just helps you offset the original installation cost.. if the money doesnt show EACH month just cancel her again.

but I would just cut her off completely so not to get ransacked by feds if kiddie porn or worse gets done on your dime.

Not everyone is computer savvy and knows how everything works.

She probably thinks it is not costing you anything more for her to tap into your wi-fi.

To her, it's like using a public wi-fi...No harm done in her mind.

All you had to tell her was the truth.

Re: So, I have been helping my neighbor with wi-fi, it has taken a terrible turn.
Well, the title pretty much says it all. I have satellite internet.

I paid quite a pretty penny to get this installed. I live in a remote area. There are no other options available.

Unless you want a dial-up connection that is reaching 24k max.

My wife made good friends with the neighbor, who saw our wireless router on her device.

So she asked my wife if it would be possible to connect to the router. At first, I had no trouble with this. (2 years ago).

Now I pay heavily for this damned thing ($80/mo) for just internet.

I thought this might be a temporary situation. No.. This neighbor is still leaching my internet!

I have changed the router password. Guess what? The neighbor came down at 12:30am tonight.

She asks "when I try to log on, it says authentication error?"

Am I wrong for this? I really hate being an ass, but damn! I think they should have their own internet service in 2 years!

What kind of router do you have??????????? I've never owned a router that could reach more than 50 feet, AT MOST, with an acceptable signal. I thought the FCC limited the strength of the routers for that very reason, for one

I have changed the SSID name and the password. When it's later today, I'm going to tell them the ISP had noticed too many mac addresses attached to the service & limited it to two devices.

If they want to connect it will be $50/mo...

Don't know what else to do about it.

 Quoting: Kinect

What you are doing is probably illegal AND it puts you, your wife AND your whole household at horrific legal liability.

1. You are not a liscensed internet provider. You probably need to look into the legalities of selling internet service that is sold to one household, but serving multiple households.

Each state is probably different, each provider probably different.

That said, why the heck to you need to take on the burden of figuring out if there is some legal loophole that would allow you do something you already know in your heart of hearts is probably not legal?

2.
You may or may not be legally liable for any kiddie porn, money laundering, harrassment, copyright violation or other illegal activity Neighbor, Neighbor's Boyfriend, or Neighbor's Boyfriend's Associates decide to conduct over YOUR internet.

You know who will be named on the warrant. You. AND your wife.

You already know who will have to pay to hire an attorney to "prove" yourself innocent.

That would be you.

3. You are not doing anything to actively and clearly dissociate yourself from a parasite.

In fact, you are more deeply entrenching yourself into the world of the parasite.

You are giving her permission and instruction to depend upon you, to entrench herself into your household.

4. Parasite will undoubtedly have no end of sob stories about why she cannot afford to pay you the $50.00 this month. "It's gonna be a little late, and I really need to watch the Sally Homemaker Bible Study and Weather Forecast every morning."

5. As others have pointed out, lying to the Parasitic Neighbor is NOT in her best interest. Conducting illegal business with her isn't either.

6. You can forthrightly tell her the truth. She can get her own internet or do without. You didn't bring her into the world, you didn't get her pregnant, and you are not legally OR morally obligated to subsidise her household.

7. You are, however, legally and morally obligated to protect your wife and household from predation and exploitation.

A knock on the door at 1230 at night over something so petty as internet access is a glaring wake up call.

Heed it.

They should pay half the bill, Kinect.

My husband rented a house for us in Ireland. Instead of getting new trash service and cramming the back alley with 4 bins, we made arrangements with the downstairs neighbors to pay the trash up for a year. We payed half and they payed half and we both use the 2 bins on their account.

I would never take something for free. It creates obligation and bad feelings.

Kinect, the decent thing to do would be to come back and tell us how it went.

You already know she is prone to extremely petty bad judgement, evidenced by her showing up at your door after midnight.

Please take precautions by having witnesses and/or recording devices deployed when you give her some straight talk on the matter.

And it might be best to do it sooner rather than later.

She *could* already be getting all mad at you, lie to her boyfriend about the circumstances of the internet cut-off, and get this blown into a real mess.

Firm, forthright talk is called for.

You are merely informing her of a business decision you have had to make. It is done, not with hard feelings, but for practical reasons.

Speak from a position of strength and calm. Never apologise to her about it. You are simply doing what you have to do to protect your own household.

And very firmly inform her NOT to come knocking on your door late at night for anything other than a life and death emergency.

Isn't it sad? You give someone an inch and they take a yard. She should have offered to help with the bill long ago. I would just tell her flat out. Don't tap dance around the issue. Her usage is causing your bill to go up so she needs to help out or not use it anymore. At this point you're not helping, you're giving. With neighbors that should be a two way street.

OP, you're an idiot. You put your wife and children in danger from deadbeats that are going to break in and rob you because you were a push-over for their demands at the outset? That's what happens when you once give a leech what it wants: then, it'll never stop making more and more demands and it'll get violent when you try to shut off the tap. Did your parents never teach you the line, 'familiarity breeds contempt?' Your wife should throw you out and get a real man in that house in your place. The very least she should do is phone your ISP and report these goings-on and have you lose your connection too. Here's hoping she does both.

Woah! That is over the top out of line.

If you will carefully read the OP's posts, he states that it is his -- the OP's -- wife who made friends with the parasitic neighbor.

OP needs to clearly state to his wife:

1) that he is permanently cutting off Neighbor's access to their internet, and

2) WHY he is doing it. Yes, it does include money, but more importantly it is to protect him, and to protect her, his wife -- and anyone else in THEIR household --against legal problems.

You do not have to let people abuse your good heart
