Turn that to the off position and you are good to go. FYI, you don't have to fill the tank, most places have 100 gal. minimum. You don't really need hot water to wash your hands or do laundry. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 45485322 I have a wood furnace in the house that works well, I can heat up a big pot on top for hot water for baths for sure. Also I guess I could fill up the washer with the warm water right? |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 53843351 United States 02/03/2014 02:20 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | So I saw a thread about a week ago talking about propane users being screwed. I was not home at the time and thought I had natural gas. Quoting: Friskel When I got home yesterday, (I just started renting this house a month ago) all of the heat was out, no hot water, stove, etc so I just assumed I was out of gas and would get it filled today. Made a fire, turned on some space heaters and I was fine. I don't need a hot shower every day. Called thismorning, and it's going to be $1300 to fill the 500 gal tank 80% (400 gal), at $3.25 a gallon. I can keep the house hot, but is there any way to bypass the water heater or something and electrically heat my water? If anyone has any ideas for working around not using propane in the Boulder mountains, please let me know Why would you completely fill a 500 gal tank at a RENTAL house.I would get enough to get through this winter and wait till prices go down in the fall if I was still living there. |

I guess it skyrocketed recently. In CO by the way. No its very cheap for this time of year and with the shortage thats happening now. That will let up once the winter has passed.I would get a couple hundred gallons and wait for the price to drop. |

I found a switch, and before it had been clicking nonstop (a toilet upstairs was running constantly) and i turned off this switch and it doesn't turn on anymore. So I should be good there, correct? Also, my landlord just said that I need to get at least a little bit in there because some of the pipes underneath the house will freeze, or something like that? Do you know anything about that? I was at 40% today and it will cost me 610.00 to get it to 80%. Thats 200 gallons. When we started with him he just filled to 50 or 60 % and each time he came we got the % up more till we were at 80. This winter has been especially cold. He gives us a discount on the price, 3.05 (todays price) per gallon if we let him come by when he is in the area. Last Edited by Intruth on 02/03/2014 02:28 PM |

Thanks GasMan Not real familiar with boilers, we don't have those in TX. The clicking you heard could have been a auto pilot start that lights the pilot light. When you turned that switch off, it probably turned off the auto ignite function. If you turned it to off, you should be okay. Now, there could be some pipes that can freeze if they don't have hot water in them so be aware of that. Where are you and how cold is it? I use propane tanks for my glassblowing, I just looked and I have 2 Blue Rhinos right now, empty of course. If i got those filled, could they heat the water? Yes they can. I would recommend at least a 100# (25 gal.) so you don't have to get it filled every day. But make sure you unhook the line at the tank valve. When you connect a yard line to a rhino tank (any tank for that matter) you have to have the regulator in line to regulate the pressure. There is usually a copper line that is sometimes curled like a pigtail, (some installers curl them, some do not) that comes out of the shut off valve on the tank and goes to the regulator. You need to remove that line from the shut off valve, leave connected to regulator(make sure to turn the tank off first) and the screw that into a rhino tank. The threads on the tanks are reverse threads, so lefty tighty, righty loosy. Then use a mixture of dish soap and water in a spray bottle to check your connections for leaks. Spray on connections liberally and look for bubbles. No bubbles, no leaks. If bubbles, tighten connection or use some Teflon tape on threads. We have 150 gallon minimum and its $4.50-$5.00 here in midwest depending on if you own your tank or not. I have feeling prices will come down once the reserves are filled again in spring and summer. Usually best time to buy is midsummer/fall. Just watch the prices once all this shortage is over. Some companies allow you to contract a certain amount, maybe 2 or 3 tankfuls and up as well if you need multiple tanks to get through the winter. |
