Gas units are much better. Under the circumstances, OP is best off buying the lowest quantity that he can reasonably buy at $3.25 - though I'd probably go for 200 gal. Use the systems in place - there's serious money to be spent changing them, especially on a rental. Just buy the propane for now - make changes in the summer, or fill the tank when/if the price drops a lot. I have no experience with the tankless systems. I was just offering that as an option that he might be able to put in-line himself and plug into a wall quickly for less than a full tank of propane. We have a regular electric water heater with about a 50 gallon tank. Just replaced it. The last one came with the house and lasted almost 20 years. It was very reliable. Tank type electric units are very reliable, as long as the tank is always filled with water. The tankless ones require massive current to flash heat the water, and the shock heating/cooling of the elements and possible lack of sufficient water to carry off the heat(when you shut off the water) tends to give these units a very short life. I've dealt with several and don't trust the tech yet. Gas units can be pretty good though. The "camping shower" propane heater unit can be good, and I've used one, but they tend to be underpowered for a shower in winter. They are available much cheaper on Amazon and Ebay, and are good as SHTF backups, IF you are really comfortable in quickly adding them. In a pinch, you can hook one up to the washing machine hoses, but having even a 20lb propane tank in the house is illegal and potentially dangerous - propane leaks will flow and pool close to the ground, then flash wildly if there's any sort of flame or spark. |

User ID: 7846557 United States 02/03/2014 04:11 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Just out of curiosity, who is your supplier? Does the landlord own the tank or is it a rental? Quoting: TheGasMan II I'm not sure of the supplier, and i'm guessing he owns the tank since he built the house and lived there for 10 years. I just called the propane company, in order to get the truck to come today i'd have to get it filled 100%. For 200gallons, i have to wait until Wednesday next week.. so like 9 or 10 days. I guess i'll try the Cabela shower and get a blue Rhino hooked up.. If he owns the tank you can buy from any supplier. You might see if there are any other companies that can service you. BTW, rent tanks normally have a sticker on them that says, "Property of XYZ Propane." If no sticker, assume it is owned. Anonymous Coward User ID: 72719026 United States 03/09/2020 08:03 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | In most areas propane is the most expensive source of heat. It is though a good backup energy source when all else fails. If you can put in, heat on demand, electric water heaters or at least an electric water heater. If still allowed use wood for back up energy. A solar water heater is fairly easy to build. Use it as hot water or as a pre warming system for the water heater. Good luck |

I was not home at the time and thought I had natural gas. Quoting: Friskel When I got home yesterday, (I just started renting this house a month ago) all of the heat was out, no hot water, stove, etc so I just assumed I was out of gas and would get it filled today. Made a fire, turned on some space heaters and I was fine. I don't need a hot shower every day. Called thismorning, and it's going to be $1300 to fill the 500 gal tank 80% (400 gal), at $3.25 a gallon. I can keep the house hot, but is there any way to bypass the water heater or something and electrically heat my water? If anyone has any ideas for working around not using propane in the Boulder mountains, please let me know You should have had em put in maybe 200 gal to get you through the next couple months. Fill it in July when the prices are way cheaper. Never fill in the middle of winter. Just passing thru. OG id 126286 NasTraDooMis |

User ID: 78308098 United States 03/09/2020 08:20 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | There is a control valve on the water heater towards the bottom, it usually has a red or black knob on top of a silver looking box. Turn that to the off position and you are good to go. Quoting: TheGasMan II FYI, you don't have to fill the tank, most places have 100 gal. minimum. Are you talking about disabling the boiler? I found a switch, and before it had been clicking nonstop (a toilet upstairs was running constantly) and i turned off this switch and it doesn't turn on anymore. So I should be good there, correct? Also, my landlord just said that I need to get at least a little bit in there because some of the pipes underneath the house will freeze, or something like that? Do you know anything about that? Thanks GasMan Same with my house. The landlord put in a couple heat lamps with automatic thermostats that turn on the lamps when temps get down to i think 36. = expensive power bill in winter. Just passing thru. OG id 126286 NasTraDooMis |

You can save a lot with some strips and aluminium tape already. Second, maybe you dont need to heat your whole house, turn radiators lower in rooms where you hardly go to. Buy PVT panels and heatpump if you can afford it. |
