I have more Native American blood in me than I do of ancestors who were slave owners (try: none), yet I'm supposed to feel sorry for black people because I'm white. But I can't reference the fact that my relatives were indians? PISS OFF!

According to Ward Churchill, the name Indian actually comes from Spanish "en Dios" or "in God" meaning the Indians lived naturally, in harmony with their environment (because they lacked the technology to do anything else) and that India was actually called Hindustan at the time of Columbus.

Most Indians I know have no problem with the word and, in fact, this is what they call each other. More specifically they will identify by their tribe name.

I appreciate the support for our Native Americans and share your respect, but the name change has to be the choice of the owner.

It is interesting that the name "redskin" was coined by the Native to distinguish themselves from the white man and the black man.

So I saw this thread and I was like oh hmm let me check this video out. Then I see at the end it was a video about the name of the football team?! ridiculous...I am Seneca and am fine with this. Besides they have been the redskins for how long now?

I think I find its most strange that the same folks saying that it should stay the same and be called redskins because it's not racist think everything else is racist. Look at the blacks, everything to them is racist yet when the Indians don't want something called the redskins people bitch away, that it's ok to leave it. Yet if it was called the negro team, or the black skins it's fine to change it for the blacks.

I wonder with all the folks claiming they have Indian in them if they carry a spirit bag daily, and even own a medicine bag. If we have some native american in us, are we not allowed to be proud of it? Because we are white-skinned, we aren't allowed to embrace our heratige? This seems invertly racist to me. As a 1/2 cherokee 1/2 Irish Human Being, I'm offended. It would be like me telling you you're ancestors aren't african if you're skin is white or vice versa. You know, so many people seem to think that teams calling themselves after the First Nations is an insult. Actually the reason sports teams (especially school teams) CHOSE to call themselves the "Indians" or the "Warriors" or the name of the local tribe is that they were HONORING the fighting spirit, the bravery, the honor, the intelligence, the nobility, and the unity of the Native Americans. That they hoped that the team members would remember and be inspired to emulate Native Americans for what they were and for what they still are.
