Re: Native American promo, (anti "Indian")
I'm native American and couldn't give a fuck about a NFL team name. The name is symbolic for "we came we saw we conquered" I also identify as an American because I embrace everything that was exchanged between the 2 worlds. The arts mostly. I also don't feel entitled to any sort of reparations because genocide happens to all races throughout history. It was along time ago. We need to keep moving on as a human race. They just push these issues to divide us. My mom and I are divided on this issue. She is still bitter about the history of the treatment of native Americans. I have to remind her that the elders don't identify themselves as native American but as human beings.

Thanks man. You pretty much summed it up as what we need to see not only as Americans or Europeans but also as World citizens and beyond.

Maybe with the help of people like you and others we will make it to that next level ;)

I have more Native American blood in me than I do of ancestors who were slave owners (try: none), yet I'm supposed to feel sorry for black people because I'm white. But I can't reference the fact that my relatives were indians? PISS OFF!

Don't tar all of us whites with the same brush. North of the "Medicine Line" we fought side by side with Tecumseh. Sitting Bull came here after the Little Big Horn.

I may not have any Native ancestors but I have native descendants. When my Metis wife birthed our youngest, he had a Mongolian spot. The Mohawk midwife said "He's a brother!"

Their struggle is our struggle. Listen to Buffy.

I have several good acquaintances from the Wampanoag tribe, Pokanokets, and they all seem comfortable referring to themselves as 'indians'.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 52511705

I worked with a few of them and hung around a few all my life. I never heard them complain about being called indian.
 Quoting: Kalona

According to Ward Churchill, the name Indian actually comes from Spanish "en Dios" or "in God" meaning the Indians lived naturally, in harmony with their environment (because they lacked the technology to do anything else) and that India was actually called Hindustan at the time of Columbus.

Most Indians I know have no problem with the word and, in fact, this is what they call each other. More specifically they will identify by their tribe name.

I appreciate the support for our Native Americans and share your respect, but the name change has to be the choice of the owner.

It is interesting that the name "redskin" was coined by the Native to distinguish themselves from the white man and the black man.

It is all about evolving as a society. Would it be ok to have a sports team called Blackskins, Sliteyes, or Palefaces, etc?
We are evolving beyond racism. Yes it still happens, obviously, but people now know that it is wrong. 100 years ago people didn't know.

Lakotas Owe Aku: NO! Black Snake tarsands pipeline: 'We have painted our faces'

[link to bsnorrell.blogspot.ca]
'Censored News'

2 SECTIONS EXCERPTED

SNIP

Lakota are united with our relatives and allies up north. We must stop this kxl from entering the territory our ancestors loved, lived on for thousands of generations, and gave their greatest gift of all to defend, their lives. Our Creation stories teach us that this is our Home on Unci Maka, our homeland is part of our identity, we have our inherent birth right as Lakota Oyate. Our inherent birth right is a spiritual and human right, and we have treaty rights.

We do not want kxl, we do not want tarsands in our lands, the tarsands must stay in the ground, the extraction and its aftermath is killing humans and all of life up there, and wasting precious water.

Please take a moment to help get our words, thoughts, and prayers out to the world, all over Unci Maka, that Lakota People, and many other Red Nations people, we have painted our faces.

Our allies up north have painted their faces. For sacred water, for Unci Maka, for our generations. As people of the earth, our coming generations have a right to sacred water, no policy, no corporation, no politics should be more important than that. Regional water shortages are befalling people all over the world, people are being displaced, the four legged, the winged nations are becoming endangered and extinct because the system in place honors a huge profit over the health of Unci Maka, prioritizes an unsustainable energy policy that is and that will continue to lead us closer to what is perhaps the most dangerous point in our lifetime, wars over war

We are in a time of prophecy, our collective action will be significant, with all the love in our hearts, we must all resist this destruction, and stand for sacred water and Unci Maka." --

I think I find its most strange that the same folks saying that it should stay the same and be called redskins because it's not racist think everything else is racist. Look at the blacks, everything to them is racist yet when the Indians don't want something called the redskins people bitch away, that it's ok to leave it. Yet if it was called the negro team, or the black skins it's fine to change it for the blacks.

I wonder with all the folks claiming they have Indian in them if they carry a spirit bag daily, and even own a medicine bag. I also wonder if they have been passed down the true knowledge as I have and have passed it down to my daughters. Generation after generation ever since the cave people days, things have been passed down. Most knowledge is already there in our brains, and we know how to use things. I bet 10 to 1 not a one of you even knows what a doni is, lolsign

I'm still pissed they massacred each other and sold each other as slaves.

The Natchez War was a disaster for French settlements in Louisiana. They allied with the Choctaw and in retaliation, defeated the Natchez and the Yazoo. Some Natchez and Yazoo refugees took shelter among the Chickasaw. The Chickasaw captured many other Yazoo and sold them into slavery to Carolina-based traders.[3]

For another poster--

It is believed that Native Americans were called Indians because Christopher Columbus thought he had landed in South East Asia. He realized his mistake, but they kept the name Indians for the natives.

Just saw this, and let me say I'm not Native American, just feel that they have had less support than most other minorities that have been horribly abused.

Not interested in a debate about the whole sports thing--don't care about sports myself, but plenty do.

Figured this short "Ad" was worth seeing and sharing.

Also, I understand why they fight this battle as one, but it is like saying all Europeans are the same.

And don't even spout that "smallpox" BS, Genocide is Genocide, and the "Trail of Tears" wasn't about Smallpox, nor was the killing of the Buffalo.

Anyways, Native Americans hold a special place in my heart, along with any people that live in harmony with the Earth.

They shouldn't try to infringe on the rights of the owner of the Redskins team to choose any name he/she sees fit.

I do think they have the right to disagree and could ask the owner to change it because it offends them. they could exclaim it is his choice is to be all inclusive and change it or keep it how it is. I would then think out of respect for the owners rights that the indian community should drop the issue and tell him/her they respect his right but are not in agreement with the decision. I think its sad the these corporate groups that are trying to get donations and funds for their group use these BS issues along with humans for you guessed it, greed!
 Quoting: Rogue Lemming

Let me start with being racist is not really an issue its your choice its mine to be racist against you... but...

Honestly, if it were the Chicago Ni$%^#s..... it would be a world of hurt. There is no need to use the name 'red skins'.. what about the Chicago Warriors?..? I mean common.

Your freedom ends where it infringes mine and that of my children not to get called names based on skin color.

Its a great ad and speaks the truth it asks for something that would hurt no one change.. heck keep the indian on the helmet again just call them the Warriors, Braves, Dancers, Drummers.. I mean again you couldn't have the Chicago Ni#$(*s...

You know, so many people seem to think that teams calling themselves after the First Nations is an insult. Actually the reason sports teams (especially school teams) CHOSE to call themselves the "Indians" or the "Warriors" or the name of the local tribe is that they were HONORING the fighting spirit, the bravery, the honor, the intelligence, the nobility, and the unity of the Native Americans. That they hoped that the team members would remember and be inspired to emulate Native Americans for what they were and for what they still are.
