Anyone here use ROKU instead of cable/dish?

I'm watching a video on my Roku right now.

we have had ours for about a month, with all the free hidden channels and so on. We are getting rid of direct tv at the end of this month. We think it is awesome.

Thanks. Do I need to keep an internet connection to use it? (I currently have Internet via Comcast).

There are subscribed channels like netflix amazon Showtime hulu the blaze sports but a lot of free channels for movies and if you like watching your favorite sermons. Wall street journal etc

I liked it so much I bought one for a few family members. Games, etc

I think you need a Interent Connection and a Wireless Modem.
That what I have.

I mainly use mine with a little USB thumb drive plugged into the back with Movies (.flv and .mp4 files encoded with H.264) on it.

I got rid of cable 2 years ago and buy high speed internet with frontier for $45 a month. We have netflix for 11.99 a month. Everyone in the house can stream with no problems either on the roku or directly from the computer. Espn 3 comes with frontier so you can watch sports on the watch espn channel. It's great, no one misses cable. We get free local channels from the antenna.

Just wish there was a way to get the NFL like directv has...

The one sport that I loved to watch was NFL football. After this year, I'm going to let that go. In my opinion they ruined the game with the newly created rules with regard to leading with the helmet, hit on a defenseless receiver ect. They are wussifying the game. The last time I checked the head is on the top of the body, how do you not lead with it.

I just use an Android box with XBMC, that's all you'll ever need. I don't even use Netflix anymore

I'm the same way man. I barely watched the season and pretty much watched just a couple of playoff games. It just isn't like it use to be.

Maybe I should watch basketball.

Going back to the Roku. It's a great device I have Netflix and a few other programs and I have the ol rabbit ears for local channels. with all the crap on cable why you pay for something that is going to have crap on all the time? Sure there is a few diamonds in the rough,but it is few and far between.Usually those diamonds Netflix,Hulu or Amazon will have soon enough.

Me!!! I bought a roku the day they came out a long time ago for Netflix (before all the stuff it has on it now) cancelled cable the next month. Nobody in the house misses it and it's been YeArs!!

I would miss the breaking news - you would get no up to the minute live coverage, just recorded video clips later. I couldn't live like that.

I LOVE my Roku.

Binged on the new season of House of Cards today.

Not sure what you have to have to make it work as my son got it for me and installed it and so forth.

But I do know that with Amazon Prime, Netflix, HBO and PBS there are more movies and better quality programs that I could ever watch in a lifetime!

All I can tell you is that the streaming works like a charm.

I think my kids are babysitting me with movies the way some parents do their kids with cartoons!

I hooked up a regular antenna to my TV for all the regular free channels and the rest is through my internet, it's perfect!

only thing stopping me from switching is local news broadcasts and live sporting events (especially nfl)

if you watch hulu, you support terrorism....saudi al-waleed ownership there. i boycotted it starting in 2010.

Local news can be found online, even breaking news. The advantage is you don't have to listen to the dopey reporter. National news ...GLP

None of you have Dishnet for internet do you? I have a 10 gig limit per month and I pay about 65 a month. It's also very slow. Lots of Lag time.

Roku sucks tried 2 diff versions when back to my ps3. With ps3 plus tversity (which is free) or playon (similar but has better pluggins like roku) we got rid of the roku. Although now I dont even use those and just us the ps3 browser alone to stream shows (bootlegs mostly) and netflix n hulu apps. Since you dont need the disc you can just looks for a ps3 that the blu ray drive is broken to oick on up on the cheap. Especially with the ps4 out and people upgrading therell be more on the market. You just cant play downloaded movies becasue of the ciniava drm crap which is why im done with sony as far as any future purchases go

We've been running Roku for 2years, within the first 2months of having one our family now has 7 of them (in-laws n what not).

We didn't cut our cable till a few months after the first one, as it is a change to CHOOSE what to watch and not be sheep!

OUR HEADS WORK SO MUCH CLEARER NOW! Just being at someones house who has cable on DRIVES US NUTS! There's got to be something mixed in besides what you're watching, and Roku must not have the tech to incorp that....


We also have the slowest damn speed TW offers and 3 roku's at once still don't bogg it down.


Once you DO get one, google "NoWhereTv" It's a private channel that basically gives you cable, but like with our news, we can just watch the segments we want and none of the other crap.

Hope this helps, the Roku's with the headphone jack in the remote control is also awesome if your other crashes early but you like to stay up watching movies

Plus like another 500 "private channels" you can link from the net.

DID YOU KNOW even SOB "suspicious observers" even has a channel on the Octclave channel >see international<

You just plug it in to the TV, and either wirelessly connect, or plug a cable into your router.

It's that easy, never need to get on your PC again, you just watch like cable, but better

for later

I have a question...
Once you install Roku, is all content they offer free?
Or do you have to pay extra for some channels?
Like HBO or some of the news channels etc.

Use a blind sword like in dance with final fantasy and just push it blind with person on a wall...where am i then while doing that ... Blind.
