Chicago To Battle Carp; Cost $18 Billion
Hundreds of millions already spent studying carp. Yet just paying fisherman to overfish them has never been implemented.

"Authorities are thinking of blocking the city's canal system to stop Asian carp entering Lake Michigan.

Such a move could cost up to $18bn (£11bn) and cause huge economic disruption to the city."

"Its study has put forward several options, one of which involves blocking parts of Chicago's canal system. This might take 25 years to complete"

From article, still less than 50%.

"It would certainly increase the cost of transportation," he told BBC News.

"It is currently very cheap and efficient to bring materials and finished goods down that Chicago ship canal. The steel industry, for example, depends on scrap metal by barge."

Needs to be done, if those things get in the great lakes it is game over. Fishermen catch and kill these plus the redneck olympics on the Illinois river.

if Chicago politics gets involved in this the price will triple but the locks they are talking about blowing are not in the city limits but in the burns.

At the cost of $18 Billion? Shutting down a major shipping route? Really?

there is more than one canal system, the I & M canal is the one they are talking about. This is the turn of the century canal and be hard to drive a pontoon boat through. The cal sag is the primary shipping canal.

Carp will clean the water. That's about all they are good for.

I guess during a time of famine some would fish it.

Why not allow Chinese to vacation and catch and eat them all? Make money from it- tourists would come for the feast and fun.

A profit could be turned, jobs created, money spent, and carp gone in a year or three.

Uh, might want to read about the mongoose of Hawaii. Adding another invasive doesn't work.

It's real simple, pay fisherman a decent amount per pound, unlimited fishing season.
