This despite Jay’s consistent ratings dominance. NBC hopes Fallon will hold Leno’s audience and not become Conan 2. The current late night landscape is populated by 19 comedy/talk shows. Leno was the Everyman, the flyover fave. He was middle of the road, less ironic than David Letterman and Jimmy Kimmel. The Caesar salad to their kale. And the only one willing to launch comedic drones over the current West Wing. His competitors haven’t exactly hammered President Barack Obama, hardly a smidgen. The paucity of Obama jokes is the dog that didn’t bark. Like their news anchor counterparts, our hosts go gentle into that late night, despite the target-rich environment of this administration. With his pen and phone, our selfie-absorbed president is one whacked uncle away from appointing himself Supreme Leader. It isn’t that they’ve abstained from attacking Democrats. Bill Clinton got savaged during his eight-year run and we can expect torrential yuks if and when Hillary declares. But they’re tongue-tied when it comes to roughing up the present POTUS. The only plausible explanation for their timidity is a fear of being labeled racist. That’s unfortunate. What rankles some Obama critics isn’t the color of his skin. It’s the thinness. Fallon's humor is old Vaudeville recreated. Look at the end of Vaudeville, which was early television. Jackie Gleason in The Honeymooners, Lucile Ball in the early "I Love Lucy" and you can see that Fallon's show was/is a recreation of that era and that era's humor (slap stick comedy). Now whether the audience wants a return to Vaudeville style humor in a nightly dose is a gamble, but if anybody can do it then it is Fallon, who is the most talented young comedian out there. Leno DID have the pulse of middle America with the stand up humor, something that Fallon does NOT have yet, but his audience was growing older and an older audience does NOT generate ad revenue like a more middle aged or younger audience (the problem is older people do NOT buy stuff at the same rates as younger and middle aged people ... thus advertisers are NOT going to be willing to pay top dollar for that demographic since they won't get a good return for their advertising dollar - and it is advertising revenue that drive TV show creation). It is in the general time bracket for a change in the host of The Tonight Show, and if NBC didn't move Fallon to The Tonight Show slot then Fallon, the best young talent out there, could easily have moved to one of the other networks once his NBC contract for Late Night expired and NBC would have been competing AGAINST him when they finally did try to switch out Leno in about 2 years. Fallon will need to get better writers for his opening monologue, since HE himself does not have the pulse of the country like Leno did/does. If he can do that ... then he could continue The Tonight Show dynasty. If he fails to do that ... well then look for The Tonight Show ratings to have problems. |
