UPDATE: Congress to vote today! Support the Ammendment to withdraw American Troops!! We have less than 24 hours to contact our Senators!

No American leader can remain silent on Iraq.

The outcome of what is now a civil war in Iraq cannot be determined by American military force. It has to be solved by Iraqis brought together to hammer out their differences. Period. It is time for Iraqis to stand up for Iraq.

Our soldiers are fighting and dying in the third war in Iraq -- not the war for mythical weapons of mass destruction or the war President Bush said had to be fought against armies of foreign jihadists, but an escalating civil war between Sunni and Shia.

Meanwhile, dissent and debate are being stifled here at home. It's time to act -- and this week, perhaps as early as tomorrow, every U.S. Senator will have that chance.

In the next 24 hours, it is likely that the Senate will vote on my amendment which calls for the withdrawal of American combat troops from Iraq by the end of this year. For months, you and I have been pressing for this step. We've made it clear that we needed to set deadlines in Iraq -- and with the formation of an Iraqi unity government and the killing of Al-Zarqawi, this is a moment of truth in Iraq.

Now a critical vote is at hand. Our brave soldiers have done their work. It's time to put the future of Iraq in the hands of the Iraqi people.

Urge your Senators to support withdrawal of combat troops by the end of 2006.

I don't know how many Senators will stand with me on this vote. But, I do know this: pushing the Iraqi government to coordinate with us on withdrawal of U.S. combat troops and pressing for the convening of a Dayton-like summit to reach a comprehensive political agreement for Iraq is the right thing to do. And we can't stop working for that outcome until we make it a reality.

Every Senator that chooses to stand with us will add momentum to our call for an end to the misguided and self-defeating policies of the Bush administration.

Urge your Senators to support withdrawal of combat troops by the end of 2006

Changing America's course in Iraq is one of the toughest political challenges you and I have ever taken on. But, we won't relent until we get the job done -- and we have to make the most of every opportunity to make ourselves heard.

I will be making myself heard on the floor of the United States Senate -- loudly and clearly. You can make our call for a dramatic change in direction even louder and clearer. Please don't hesitate before acting.

Sincerely,

John Kerry

Howdy Polly: Do you believe that calling any member of congress influences them at all? I understand that if you don't act you don't have much right to complain but do you think it helps one way or the other?

Personally, I think your calls and letters DO have an impact.

However, a call or note from the resident of 1600 PA Avenue carries more weight if the resident is a member of the majority party in Congress....sigh.

That being said, there are SOME congresscritters who buck the system occassionally, and others who want to know what the folks at home are saying. This year I think more of the R's are listening because it's election year. :)

Okie dokie...I just called Cornyn and Hutchison (TX). At both offices, the telephone attendees were courteous and pleasant. I asked each senator to support Mr. Kerry's amendment to withdraw the American combat troops from Iraq by the end of 2006.

Cornyn's office took my zip code. Hutchison's office had an automated system that recognized my area code.

Hope to hell others call, too.

Don't blame me; I voted for Ron Paul.

Do you know what an amendment is? Do you know how an amendment is passed? What is the difference between a bill that becomes law and an amendment that becomes law? If you can't answer these questions, die now.

If you haven't made a call, please, do it now!

Cable news is speculating that because they have tied support for the troops in with support for bush's sham war, many congresscritters will feel compelled to vote to keep our soldiers in Iraq indefinitely because to do differently it may look as though they don't support our troops.

Imagine. The games they play with words.

Let your rep know we want our troops home, NOW!!

This is the Congress that handed THEIR war power (and legally their's alone [Legislative branch calls for war, not the Executive branch]) over to Bush, right? Until I hear just ONE of the Senators or Representitives expose (or even complain about) the corrupt ways of their fellow members, I will have to assume they are all criminals.

58 is a fascist whose ideas are past their prime.

Fascism worked well for those like you in the past 58, but today, with the massive amount of information that the average person has at their disposal, you and those like you will never be able to deceive the way you did in the past.

58, you are on the wrong side.
There is no honor in your way of thinking.

It would be a *very* big mistake to remove our troops at this time. Not only would it create a huge power vacuum that would probably be filled by the same kind of psychotic nutcase as the President of Iran (or worse - thus destabilizing the region even more), it would also reinforce the notion that we are a bunch of spineless jellyfish who never finish what we start, and who abandon our allies when things get hot, because of political pressure, thus opening oursrselves up for another '9/11'-like attack (and this time, you Lefties wouldn't have Bush to blame for it - just *yourselves*).

Re: UPDATE: Congress to vote today! Support the Ammendment to withdraw American Troops!! We have less than 24 hours to contact our Senators!
Pay attention 100653 ...Senator Kerry is proposing working toward a gradual troop withdrawal to be completed by the end of the year, NOT immediately. Additionally, all of the tasks placed before the troops have been completed. The most recent: To train an Iraqi police force. They've completed this now with the training of over 250,000 troops.

If we do not consciously work to extricate ourselves from this situation, we will quite literally be there forever.

Do not allow the fictitious claims of the 'domino-effect' to cloud your judgment. This is a false principle. Terrorism will not spread like some black plague from Iraq if we withdraw. The domino effect does not exist.

This same argument was used to overstay our welcome in Vietnam, only then it was the 'Communism domino' we feared. This same lie was recently used in a different form ... a free and democratic Iraq would have a 'domino' effect, and spread democracy throughout the middle east.

It's a lie, it's unscientific, and it's crap.

Since the representatives' attention is so caught-up in the process of being reelected, I recommend the following approach when contacting them:

"Support Senator Kerry's plan to withdraw the troops by the end of the year, or I'm not going to vote for you."

Well, that's what happens when representatives vote with their wallets.

Folks, you know what has to be done ... vote for somebody else in November, and make it very clear exactly why.

We're not interested in a principle or an assertion ... we just want representatives who will do their jobs.

Is that the best you can do for a rebuttal?

Pretty sad if you ask me.

Go crawl back into your hole Mr Fascist, or come out and see the light.

Does your Momma actually have her own 'boy', like you say? It isn’t me though.

I don’t think I could stomach the presence of someone that would raise a person with such a fascist view of life.

Try and think of something better, Ill give you another chance.

guess you're having a bad week.

I understand.

Zarqawi dead
insurgency on the run
troops to stay to finish the job
a FREE IRAQ emerging

I can understand why you are so angry.

I guess it's just a coincidence that this
troop withdrawal thing is coming up just
before the fall elections? Do you suppose
they could set a "tentative" schedule and
then AFTER the elections decide it was
not the "right" time?

You've been watching too many movies 58. You cannot simply 'laundry-list' your way through an argument. But since it's easier to respond in kind ...

What is the significance of Zarqawi's death?

What evidence do you have to support your claim of "insurgency on the run"?

What do you mean SPECIFICALLY by "finish the job"?

How do you quantify the emergence of a "FREE IRAQ"? What evidence do you have to support this claim?
