Anonymous Coward User ID: 94139 United States 06/18/2006 10:01 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | It is about time there was a law stating that if this occures and the laptop or other hardware device did not have encryption setup for the filesystem the company involved should be fined an amount of no less than 10% based on its total net worth! This is not funny anymore and there is Zero reason for it except for faulty policy and implementation. PERIOD People need to start suing these companies and government branches NOW. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 107238 United States 06/18/2006 10:53 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | As far as I'm concerned, there should be no need to supply a Soc. Sec. No. for anything but Soc. Sec. benefits. You all know that insurance companies give you a policy number. Your mortgage on your house and car has its number. Your driver's license has its number. Your credit card has its number, and your bank account has its own number. We got along just fine in years gone by without the need of divulging our SS ## to every institution on the planet. We need to get back to the old ways of doing things and not keep changing the rules. It only makes things worse. . |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 107249 United States 06/18/2006 11:01 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | "The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has recently learned that an employee took home electronic data from the VA, which he was not allowed to do and was in violation of established policies. The employee's home was burglarized and this data was stolen. The data contained identifying information including names, social security numbers, and dates of birth for up to 26.5 million veterans and some spouses, as well as some disability ratings.............." It went on to tell where to report problems and said that they had to use the IRS to forward the letter because they (the VA) didn't have our current addresses. The standard military 2-sided form (I don't remember the name of it) has everything on it. Birth date, place of birth, full name, parents, Mother's maiden name, education history, social security number, etc. If this is the data stolen, we are all ripe for the picking. My only hope is the fact that I am in the last half of the alphabet and there are so many identities for the crooks to steal. |
