For glimpse of land cost in most states
try the United Country Real Estate website.
You can search by state, price, vacant land/farm etc

Re: Where's a good place to go live a simple life?
These are two places my wife has been talking about.

1. Montana- The great frontier, and wood choppin. Streams with water.

2. Arkansas- Close to the diamond mine and lakes, because it is cheap to live, and state parks close by.

Not sure I could leave Texas.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 44605158

This is my post. Signed out accidentally, anyone been to Arkansas or Montana?
 Quoting: Lionman13

I've been to both.

The people in Arkansas are absolute back water hicks. I'm not the most sophisticated guy, but the Clampets from the Hillbilly's TV show comes to mind. That is the truth.

Montana is full of competent strong willed proud people. They are not as social as most places, but they are very kind and thoughtful. They are just as happy to be alone as in a group of friends - they are not needy people at all. Montana is a more relaxed setting where the people know who they are and don't pretend to be something they are not. A state full of real people.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 41220305

Being a whitewater kayaker from N. Louisiana, I spend a lot of time in Arkansas.

Arkansas has the best whitewater between the Smokies an Rockies, but it all rain dependent and the best creeks are run at flash flood stage with an occasional tree running the creek with you.

I always think of the weather I would never want to live in a place that is too hot, too cold or too humid or too dry.

Some place where you can have seclusion but there's a town nearby if you want supplies or to be around people

A place where crime is low and people are nice and friendly

A place where there is plenty of water and a year- round growing season

Both mountains and beaches

Low cost of living

You might consider.....

"About Canada"

These questions about Canada were posted on an International Tourism Website and obviously the answers came from a fellow Canuck.

Q: I have never seen it warm on TV, so how do the plants grow? (UK)
A: We import all plants fully grown and then just sit around watching them die.

Q: Will I be able to see Polar Bears in the street?(USA)
A: Depends how much you've been drinking.

Q: I want to walk from Vancouver to Toronto - can I follow the railroad tracks? (Sweden)
A: Sure, it's only Four thousand miles, take lots of water.

Q: Is it safe to run around in the bushes in Canada? (Sweden)
A: So its true what they say about Swedes.

Q: It is imperative that I find the names and addresses of places to contact for a stuffed Beaver. (Italy)
A: Let's not touch this one.

Q: Are there any ATMs (cash machines) in Canada? Can you send me a list of them in Toronto, Vancouver, Edmonton and Halifax? (UK)
A: What did your last slave die of ?

Q: Can you give me some information about hippo racing in Canada?(USA)
A: A-fri-ca is the big triangle shaped continent south of Europe. Ca-na-da is that big country to your North . . . oh forget it. Sure, the hippo racing is every Tuesday night in Calgary. Come naked.

Q: Which direction is North in Canada? (USA)
A: Face south and then turn 180 degrees. Contact us when you get here and we'll send the rest of the directions.

Q: Can I bring cutlery into Canada? (UK)
A: Why? Just use your fingers like we do.

Q: Can you send me the Vienna Boys' Choir schedule? (USA)
A: Aus-tri-a is that quaint little country bordering Ger-man-y, which is....oh forget it. Sure, the Vienna Boys Choir plays every Tuesday night in Vancouver and in Calgary, straight after the hippo races. Come naked.

Re: Where's a good place to go live a simple life?
In the u.s., life does not get any more quiet or simple than in alaska (outside of the urban areas).

It's the least densely populated state in the country, by a very large margin, yet has more natural resources than any other state. 3 million+ lakes, 3000+ rivers, more coastline than all of the lower 48 combined, and more wetland than all the lower 48 combined. 2.5 times the size of texas. 750,000 people +/-

Don't confuse simple life and easy life, though. Huge difference

I'm a hard worker and never tried to get anything in this life the easy way. Always prepared to grind and earn my way. I'm in good shape too. Can run for days but am also the haul brush split wood kinda guy. I won't get the two confused wink

Thanks for your response.

First I love Alaska, if I had gone there in early in life, never would have left. Saying that, women are important. Not many and those that are there don't think/act/look like what you're use to. They don't look like Palin. They act like her but....

Come to South Korea ! heheh! ( joking)

I think you should just do backpacking
to every place , and see where you would like to
settle !

Each place has different kind of energy
so it's not easy to 'classify' where is the best for you!

Just about last month I had the same thought
so I was thinking about going back to my grandparents' country home where I used to enjoy my childhood...
but I am not very sure now as many things came up
recently!
 Quoting: Amy 55779445

Hey Amy :)

I'd like to go backpacking around, but I don't know if I could support that and still have enough at the end to find a place. I'd have to stay here longer and save up more. Would be nice though.

And I'd totally consider Korea lol! Why not? I bet there's beautiful places to check out. Right now, I'm not discounting anywhere! :)

About you reconsidering doing the same kind of thing, I hope it's not because your life got complicated in a bad way. I hope you can still go back to the country. Just from what I've read from you before, you seem like someone who would be at home close to nature.

you're sweet !

I hope you will find a best place for your future settling!

Lake Tahoe. Nevada side (no state taxes) you are within an hour or so of Sacramento or Reno. Lived here for 20 years. Found my wife here. Camping, bike riding, snowmobiling, skiing, hiking, racing around the lake at midnight in a Viper, water sports, did I mention hot girls, night life, day life, never sleep life, or the simple life at 800.00 a month in rent. Oh, and the lake!

Re: Where's a good place to go live a simple life?
it's a great idea to put your feelers out there first. it really just depends on what kind of simple life you want.

do you want to live off the land?
live in a small town?
rural area?
mountains or ocean?

lots of things to consider! good luck in your journey!!
 Quoting: Otsana

Good questions. I'm leaning towards mountains I think. Mountains are just so beautiful. I really dig that kind of terrain.

I'd not have a problem with a small town; but certainly don't wanna go bigger than that. Might even have a chance meeting a lady in a small town area lol. Who knows. grinning

All it really needs to be is peaceful. I can't do this life anymore. The simple living is calling me and has been for a while now. I've worked very hard to get to where I could make a move and I'm almost there.
 Quoting: Sinclair

Don't come to Colorado. It has become expensive and difficult to live in the mountains here. USG moved a lotta shit here a few years back and this has become a hotspot NWO place. Go for the lesser known states or countries.

Re: Where's a good place to go live a simple life?
I've finally paid off all of my college debt, and am looking to start over somewhere. I'm in my early 30s, single, and have no children; basically, I have no responsibilities outside of paying rent wherever I go, and feeding myself.

So, where is a good place to go live a laid back, simple life? I have no desire to live lavishly or in excess. I also have no desire to live in a city (Been there, done that).

I've lived in NY my entire life and haven't really traveled much, so I really have no idea where would be a good place to try. Anyone got some good ideas? Thanks in advance.
 Quoting: Sinclair

NOT Miami. What a shit town this is. Been living here two years now. I would say colorado. Weed is legal now so you could live a somewhat laid back life.

Not Austin TX or anywhere in populated Central TX. High property taxes, over crowded, traffic sucks, Agenda 21 central.

Look into Greer, Arizona - one of the most beautiful and peaceful places I have ever been.

Sinclair,

Sandpoint, Idaho is it.

use the search engine here on GLP :)

it's magical.
 Quoting: Otsana

I don't get this magical mystique lately.

I've been there more than a few times. It's nice. It's a pine forest in the mountains next to a lake. It's nice.

It's real cold in the winter. There are no jobs. And it's very expensive.

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 55805876

sorry you have had such a negative experience.

it has been the opposite for me.

got a job in the first 2 weeks I moved.

the winter is mild compared to some other mountain towns I've been to, and lots of wonderful humidity.

it's wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy cheaper than the city.

Re: Where's a good place to go live a simple life?
The desert will free your mind by forcing you to live in the now instead of the past or the future. The desert demands your attention if you wish to survive. This does not mean living in a city. It means living down a dirt road. Water and electricity can be a bitch but learning to deal is part of the equation. If you want the full experience buy you a little 5 acre lot put up a pole barn and park your trailer under it. Pick up a 1550 gallon water tank and drain your pole barn roof into it. will need a trailer and a tank for hauling water, a pump, hoses, etc. unless you want to drill a 1500 ft deep well at $20 a foot and bring in 3-phase power for the well pump or you could rig up an old volkswagon engine to bring the water up. If you don't want to live on solar and wind find a place that already has grid power unless you got lots of money to pay the power company to run power to the property.

Very tough. Too tough for all but the hardiest souls. If you can cut it you will experience simplicity and freedom like never before. Just being able to take a hot shower will seem like a European vacation. Air conditioning is like a miracle from heaven. A night sky like the likes of which most will never see. Nature all around with very few humans to break the silence.

greenhorns often get lost only to be found by the circling buzzards picking their bones clean. most pilgrims don't make it through the first summer. fewer still make it through 2 summers.

the desert is simple harsh reality in it's purist form.

Re: Where's a good place to go live a simple life?
Intriguing question, OP!

My opinion, if you've not traveled much, you're better off staying in the US. There is still a wide variety of choices here. Adjusting to another language and culture can be way more difficult than anticipated.

Also, an American traveling to other countries for the first time may be shocked by the difference in plumbing standards and ready availability of hot water. Most of us Americans really don't know how good we have it.

That said, do all the research, then listen to your gut. Go wherever it guides you. You are embarking on a great adventure. Enjoy every second.

Best of luck to you! You seem like a smart, able person who knows what he wants. I have no doubt you'll find it.

The best place to live a simple life is wherever you are. No one can calculate how the universe shifts it's matter around, nor by whom. Simplicity exists in one's spiritual awakening in the form of Surrunder to the Absolute and not any other place. yoda
