Why are "street smart survivor" ghetto thugs always self-destructive???

It makes no sense. All the "ooh I'm street smart! I'm a survivor! I'm hard! Survival of the fittest!" thug types are always going out of their way to drink too much and do too many drugs. Even with tobacco, the "ghetto" types will smoke too much or smoke blunts and inhale cigar smoke too deeply. If you're lifestyle is all about destroying your physical and mental health, how can you be a "survival of the fittest" type?

Most rappers just seem like they're self-medicating for emotional pain they can't express openly, hence the self-destructive actions. How is that tough??? The mentality is like "get ready because we're taking over but let me smoke 8 blunts a day and drink a bottle of liquor and pop too many pills and snort too many powders"!!! Why don't they just kill themselves swiftly if that's their goal??
