Terrifying and intriguing news reports out of Utah about the Zika virus. I myself have not been too concerned over the virus as I have followed it, but this case in Utah really makes you stop and wonder. Super Zika?

From the CDC

[link to www.cdc.gov]

CDC is assisting in the investigation of a case of Zika in a Utah resident who is a family contact of the elderly Utah resident who died in late June. The deceased patient had traveled to an area with Zika and lab tests showed he had uniquely high amounts of virus—more than 100,000 times higher than seen in other samples of infected people—in his blood. Laboratories in Utah and at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported evidence of Zika infection in both Utah residents.

State and local public health disease control specialists, along with CDC, are investigating how the second resident became infected. The investigation includes additional interviews with and laboratory testing of family members and health care workers who may have had contact with the person who died and trapping mosquitoes and assessing the risk of local spread by mosquitoes.

Unusual US Zika virus case baffles experts

[link to www.bbc.com]

Experts are trying to work out exactly how a US carer has caught Zika after tending to a dying elderly man with the virus.

Until now it was thought that only mosquitoes and sex spread Zika, as well as the risk of mother-to-child transmission in the womb.

The carer, from Utah, did not have any of these known risk factors.

US officials say they are monitoring the situation carefully and carrying out more tests.

They stress that the chance of spread from one person to another without sexual contact is still very unlikely or rare.

The Centres for Disease Control says the patient, who died in June, had travelled to an area where Zika-infected mosquitoes are present.

Lab tests showed he had uniquely high amounts of the virus - more than 100,000 times higher than seen in other samples from infected people - in his blood.

The CDC has sent out an emergency response team to investigate.

Twist in Zika Outbreak: New York Case Shows Women Can Spread It to Men

[link to www.nytimes.com]

The first case of female-to-male sexual transmission of the Zika virus has been documented in New York City, raising the prospect that the disease could spread more widely beyond the countries where it is already endemic and largely transmitted by mosquitoes.

Zika Virus May Remain in Semen Longer Than Previously Thought

[link to abcnews.go.com]

The Zika virus has been found in one man's semen 93 days after he first reported symptoms, topping the previous known record of 62 days, according to a letter published in Lancet Infectious Diseases this month.

The patient, a 27-year-old man in France, came down with mild symptoms -- weakness, muscle pain and conjunctivitis -- shortly after returning from Thailand late last year. He had decided to freeze his sperm before an upcoming chemotherapy treatment, which led to a French laboratory testing his semen for Zika on March 9. While the virus was found in his semen, it was not found in his blood or urine.

After taking a detailed medical history, the authors of the letter were unable to identify other ways the man could have been infected. The virus is most commonly spread by a species of mosquito that is found in Thailand, but it may also be spread through sexual contact, contaminated blood or needle sticks.

Thailand does not have active transmission of the virus, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, but it has reported sporadic cases of Zika since 2012, according to the Thai Ministry of Public Health.

Zika Cases Likely Transmitted Locally in U.S. for the First Time, Officials Say

“As we have anticipated, Zika is now here. Everything we’ve seen so far indicates to us that this is mosquito-borne transmission,” U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Tom Frieden said Friday on a call with reporters. While the findings are concerning, and more cases could be found, health officials “don’t expect widespread transmission in the continental U.S.,” he said.

Expert to Rio athletes: "Don't put your head under water"

Just days ahead of the Olympic Games the waterways of Rio de Janeiro are as filthy as ever, contaminated with raw human sewage teeming with dangerous viruses and bacteria, according to a 16-month-long study commissioned by The Associated Press.

Not only are some 1,400 athletes at risk of getting violently ill in water competitions, but the AP's tests indicate that tourists also face potentially serious health risks on the golden beaches of Ipanema and Copacabana.

Zika Prompts Travel Warning for Area in Miami

Officials fear mosquitoes in the area are carrying the Zika virus and may be resistant to insecticide.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommended on Monday that pregnant women avoid unnecessary travel to an area near downtown Miami in light of new locally transmitted cases that surfaced over the weekend and the possibility that mosquitoes in the area may be resistant to insecticide.

Officials also recommended that anyone who had been to the area after June 15 should wait at least eight weeks before trying to conceive. The virus, which can be spread sexually as well as through mosquitoes, is believed to stay in semen for at least two months, so men who have had Zika should wait at least six months before trying to impregnate their partner, given that the virus causes the birth defect microcephaly, CDC said.

CDC is dispatching additional staff to Florida after the state's governor, Rick Scott, on Monday called for a federal emergency response team. Members of the team will be assisting with measures like lab testing and mosquito control. Officials believe the virus began spreading in a small area just north of downtown Miami in early July.

China's 'mosquito factory' aims to wipe out Zika, other diseases
Every week, scientists in southern China release 3 million bacteria-infected mosquitoes on a 3 km long island in a bid to wipe out diseases such as dengue, yellow fever and Zika.
The scientists inject mosquito eggs with wolbachia bacteria in a laboratory, then release infected male mosquitoes on the island on the outskirts of the city of Guangzhou.

South Carolina patient has rare ‘brain-eating’ amoeba, CDC confirms

A patient in South Carolina has tested positive for Naegleria fowleri, the so-called “brain-eating amoeba,” The Centers for Disease Control confirmed in a statement.

... “First, you must be swimming in water in which the amoeba is present,” she said. “Second, you must jump into the amoeba-containing water feet-first, allowing the water to go up your nose with enough force that the amoeba can make its way to the brain. Most commonly, exposure results in the amoeba dying before causing infection.

“You should avoid swimming or jumping into bodies of fresh water when the water is warm and the water levels are low. Also, you should either hold your nose or use a nose plug. You cannot be infected by merely drinking water containing the ameba,” Dr. Bell said.

The best way to avoid Naegleria fowleri is through prevention:
-- Avoid water-related activities in warm, untreated, or poorly treated water.
-- Hold your nose shut or use nose clips when taking part in water-related activities.
-- Avoid digging in or stirring up sediment surrounding warm, fresh water.

We do not learn from history because our studies are brief and prejudiced. In a surprising manner, 250 years emerges as the average length of national greatness. This average has not varied for 3,000years. The stages of the rise and fall of great nations seem to be:
The Age of Pioneers , The Age of Conquests ,The Age of Commerce ,The Age of Affluence ,The Age of Intellect ,The Age of Decadence.
Decadence is marked by: Defensiveness, Pessimism, Materialism,Frivolity An influx of foreigners The Welfare State A weakening of religion. Decadence is due to: Too long a period of wealth and power, Selfishness Love of money ,The loss of a sense of duty.
The life histories of great states are amazingly similar, and are due to internal factors. Their falls are diverse, because they are largely the result of external causes. - Sir John Glubb The Fate of Empires

Zika infection may affect adult brain cells

Concerns over the Zika virus have focused on pregnant women due to mounting evidence that it causes brain abnormalities in developing fetuses. However, new research in mice from scientists at The Rockefeller University and La Jolla Institute for Allergy and Immunology suggests that certain adult brain cells may be vulnerable to infection as well. Among these are populations of cells that serve to replace lost or damaged neurons throughout adulthood, and are also thought to be critical to learning and memory.
