CHENNAI: Three people of Ellaiamman Koil Street at New Gummudipoondi in Tiruvallur district have died since Monday of viral pneumonia, which doctors suspect to be H1N1. Fourteen other residents, including 10 children from the same street, have been admitted to two state-run hospitals in the city following complaints of cough, cold and fever.

Srinivasan, 28, and Angammal, 54, died on Monday while Ramesh, 20, succumbed to the illness on Tuesday.

The number of new H7N9 infections in Mainland China continues to rise, with an unusual (for China) mid-month announcement that between Jan 1st - Jan 15th another 84 cases were reported to the NFHPC. Some of these cases had onset in December.

According to the HK CHP's numbers, that brings this winter's tally (since November) to 227 cases, although that number already appears to be out of date (Hunan Province has reported at least 5 cases since the 15th).

This is - by far - the fastest, and most intense early start to China's yearly H7N9 epidemic, which began in 2013. This from Hong Kong's CHP, after which I'll return with more.

Wilson County schools closed for the week; 2,000 students, 138 teachers out with illness

Wilson County Schools has canceled classes for the rest of this week because of illness with more than 2,000 students and 138 teachers out sick on Monday.

“Obviously, we don’t close school for almost an entire week, unless the situation is very serious," Director of Schools Donna Wright said. "The last thing we want is for this to spread to even more students and staff. Hopefully these 4 days off, plus the weekend, and the holiday on Monday will give everyone time to recuperate and come back well.”

As many as 79 people died from H7N9 bird flu in China last month, the government said, stoking worries that the spread of the virus this season could be the worst on record.

January's fatalities were up to four times higher than the same month in past years, and brought the total H7N9 death toll to 100 people since October, data from the National Health and Family Planning Commission showed late on Tuesday.

Bird flu strain taking a toll on humans

By Dennis NormileFeb. 17, 2017 , 1:30 PM

SHANGHAI, CHINA—An avian influenza virus that emerged in 2013 is suddenly spreading widely in China, causing a sharp spike in human infections and deaths. Last month alone it sickened 192 people, killing 79, according to an announcement this week by China's National Health and Family Planning Commission in Beijing.

The surge in human cases is cause for alarm, says Guan Yi, an expert in emerging viral diseases at the University of Hong Kong in China. "We are facing the largest pandemic threat in the last 100 years," he says.

As of 16 January, the cumulative toll from H7N9 was 918 laboratory-confirmed human infections and 359 deaths, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Despite its high mortality rate, H7N9 had gotten less attention of late than two other new strains—H5N8 and H5N6—that have spread swiftly, killing or forcing authorities to cull millions of poultry. But so far, H5N8 has apparently not infected people; H5N6 has caused 14 human infections and six deaths.

China Fights Spread of Deadly Avian Virus

[link to www.nytimes.com (secure)]

Chris Buckley February 18, 2017

The Chinese authorities are battling a surge in H7N9 “bird flu” infections, and have shuttered live poultry markets across the country after dozens of people in recent weeks were killed by the disease.

As of Friday, health officials confirmed eight deaths and 77 diagnosed cases just in February, according to Xinhua, the state news agency.

Last month, 192 people in China learned they had the virus, and 79 of them died, according to official numbers released on Tuesday. The strain, H7N9, is an avian influenza virus that can infect people who come in close contact with infected live or newly killed birds.

Hard to Detect, China Bird Flu Virus May Be More Widespread

[link to www.usnews.com]
Dominique Patton February 17, 2017

Bird flu infection rates on Chinese poultry farms may be far higher than previously thought, because the strain of the deadly virus that has killed more than 100 people this winter is hard to detect in chickens and geese, animal health experts say.

Poultry that have contracted the H7N9 strain of the avian flu virus show little or no sign of symptoms. That means any infection is only likely to be detected if farmers or health authorities carry out random tests on a flock, the experts said.

But in humans, it can be deadly.

That's different to other strains, such as the highly pathogenic H5N6 that struck South Korean farms in December, prompting the government to call in the army to help cull some 26 million birds.

But that strain didn't kill any people.

There have been multiple outbreaks of bird flu around the world in recent months, with at least half a dozen different strains circulating. The scale of the outbreaks and range of viral strains increases the chances of viruses mixing and mutating, with new versions that can spread more easily between people, experts say.

plz keep these repoprts coming and this page updated. it is appreciated. i'm sure others come in to read now and then.
2 notes: hospitals seem to b quuick to do visitor restrictions more so than past yrs. schools all over have closed due to illness and been disinfected. do not ever remember entire school systems being closed and cleaned b4. schools are set up get more summer vacation days and do not like closing for half-wit reasons mid-season.very unusual.
ppl who have been sick the last 2 winters will tell u the "flu" they get is not the same as the flu of past yrs. even the medicines used to treat it are different. it comes with different symptons and lasts longer. many ppl report getting over it only to get it back in a cpl wks.the reports seem to indicate a more serious repiratory illness than the 24hr flu.

From Avian Flu Diary afludiary.(aspot4blogs).com

KSA: Wadi Al Dawasir MERS Cluster Adds 8th Case (An Asymptomatic HCW)

The household/hospital cluster of MERS cases in Wadi Al Dawasir - which we've been following for several days - continues to expand (see this morning's post MERS-CoV: Wadi Al Dawasir Hospital Cluster Grows for more background), with the addition of an asymptomatic healthcare worker today.

This is the 8th case reported from Wadi Al Dawasir in less than a week.

[snip]

While we've long known that some people can be infected with the MERS coronavirus without showing symptoms, we don't have a very good handle on how often that happens, or if these people can pass the virus on to others.

Since a substantial number of community acquired cases have no apparent risk exposure (to camels, health care facilities, or known MERS cases), this has led to speculation that limited community transmission via asymptomatic or mild carriers may be occurring.

Scientists say 3% of Ebola victims caused 61% of cases

Scientists have concluded that if they could have appropriately quarantined about 840 people infected with Ebola in the 2014-15 epidemic that originated in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, they might have prevented more than 17,000 cases and saved thousands of lives.

The findings are prompting a new look at quarantine of disease “superspreaders” in such situations.

The results come from the study “Spatial and temporal dynamics of superspreading events in the 2014-2015 West Africa Ebola epidemic.”

During the Ebola outbreak a few years ago, it seemed the progression of the disease didn't fit normal viral outbreaks at all. Perhaps this is a clue.

Ebola outbreak declared after three die in Democratic Republic of Congo
An Ebola outbreak has been declared in the northeast region of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The World Health Organisation says three deaths are being linked to the virus, and it is taking the situation "very seriously".

One of those killed had tested positive for Ebola after coming down with a haemorrhagic fever last month in Bas-Uele, a province which borders the Central African Republic.

WHO spokesman Christian Lindmeier has told Sky News that work is under way to find people who may have been in contact with the Ebola sufferer.
