CDC reports variant of swine flu not seen previously in people
October 28, 2016

A Centers for Diseases Control and Prevention (CDC) report released yesterday says 18 people in Michigan and Ohio fell ill after an outbreak of Influenza A(H3N2) Variant Virus that had not seen previously in people. Health officials linked the infections to swine exhibits at agricultural fairs. All 18 people have since recovered.

Dr. Gregory Poland, director of Mayo Clinic's Vaccine Research Group says, “Influenza A(H3N2) variant virus has unique attributes genetically and, in this case, a recombinant swine gene and mutation that has not previously been known to infect a human. We have always had these variant viruses. What has changed is that a robust surveillance system is now in place. This report by the CDC shows the system works."

Dr. Poland stresses there is no reason the general population should worry even though it raises some concerns.

Microcephaly Found in Babies of Zika-Infected Mothers Months After Birth

It is the news that doctors and families in the heart of Zika territory had feared: Some babies not born with the unusually small heads that are the most severe hallmark of brain damage as a result of the virus have developed the condition, called microcephaly, as they have grown older.

OT but damn important, IMO --

Philip Morris could stop making conventional cigarettes

The so called iQOS product heats tobacco rather than burning it.

The tobacco giant claims this means smokers get the same nicotine hit, but 90% less of the nasty toxins that come with cigarette smoke.

It says trials - not yet externally verified - found the new cigarette had the same impact as quitting smoking.

4 more Zika cases, likely homegrown, found in Texas

DALLAS (AP) — Four more cases of Zika that were likely transmitted by mosquito bites in Texas have been found in the same neighborhood where the state's first such case was discovered, state health officials said Friday.

The Texas Department of State Health Services said the new cases were found during tests conducted after the first homegrown infection, announced on Nov. 28, was found in a woman who lives in Brownsville, a town along the Mexico border.

The four people who were later diagnosed live close to the woman's home and reported becoming ill between Nov. 29 and Dec. 1. Health officials believe they acquired the infections in the area before mosquito control efforts intensified following the initial case, department spokesman Chris Van Deusen said.

Florida is the only other state in the U.S. with locally spread Zika. On Friday, officials there said the popular tourist destination of South Beach was cleared of active transmission, though the virus remains a risk in Miami-Dade County.

More than 20 million birds have been culled to contain the bird flu outbreak, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs said Tuesday. That accounts for 12 percent of all poultry in Korea and marks a new record.

Quarantine officials have started to stockpile bird flu vaccines to prepare for a pandemic. The ministry said Tuesday it will stockpile antigens for the H5N6 virus.
Once they are created, it takes just two weeks for vaccines to be mass-produced. But vaccinating poultry is more expensive than culling and will not be possible until March or April.

South Korea mobilises army to speed up extended poultry cull in worst bird flu outbreak

South Korea on Monday mobilised armed forces to play an active part in its biggest-ever poultry cull as the spread of a highly contagious strain bird flu continued, ordering that another 1.6 million birds be destroyed in affected areas within 24 hours.

The latest cull, announced in a statement by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, brings the total number of birds to be destroyed to 26 million in an outbreak first confirmed on Nov. 18. Quarantine and sanitary restrictions were implemented after the initial cases but the flu has spread..

... at a poultry farm on the southern island of Kyushu . . . This is the seventh case this winter since the highly pathogenic H5 virus was confirmed at poultry farms in Niigata and Aomori prefectures in late November.

A week ago, about 120,000 were destroyed at a farm in neighbouring Miyazaki prefecture after tests showed the presence of the H5 bird flu strain there.

Interesting find, Ebola Virus found in the lungs of survivors.

[link to www.apextribune.com]

A recent study found that the Ebola virus could linger and take up residence in the lungs of those that are recovering from such an infection.

This could lead to quite serious issues. It could potentially account for respiratory human-to-human disease transmissions.

The number of new H7N9 infections in Mainland China continues to rise, with an unusual (for China) mid-month announcement that between Jan 1st - Jan 15th another 84 cases were reported to the NFHPC. Some of these cases had onset in December.

According to the HK CHP's numbers, that brings this winter's tally (since November) to 227 cases, although that number already appears to be out of date (Hunan Province has reported at least 5 cases since the 15th).

This is - by far - the fastest, and most intense early start to China's yearly H7N9 epidemic, which began in 2013. This from Hong Kong's CHP, after which I'll return with more.

Wilson County schools closed for the week; 2,000 students, 138 teachers out with illness

Wilson County Schools has canceled classes for the rest of this week because of illness with more than 2,000 students and 138 teachers out sick on Monday.

“Obviously, we don’t close school for almost an entire week, unless the situation is very serious," Director of Schools Donna Wright said. "The last thing we want is for this to spread to even more students and staff. Hopefully these 4 days off, plus the weekend, and the holiday on Monday will give everyone time to recuperate and come back well.”
