Scientists say 3% of Ebola victims caused 61% of cases

Scientists have concluded that if they could have appropriately quarantined about 840 people infected with Ebola in the 2014-15 epidemic that originated in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, they might have prevented more than 17,000 cases and saved thousands of lives.

The findings are prompting a new look at quarantine of disease “superspreaders” in such situations.

The results come from the study “Spatial and temporal dynamics of superspreading events in the 2014-2015 West Africa Ebola epidemic.”

During the Ebola outbreak a few years ago, it seemed the progression of the disease didn't fit normal viral outbreaks at all. Perhaps this is a clue.

Deadly Bird Flu In China Evolves, Spreads To New Regions

[link to www.npr.org]

This past year China had the largest outbreak of a deadly bird flu since the virus was first detected in March 2013.

For the past five years, China has had annual waves of H7N9 outbreaks that peak around January and February.

During the 2017 season, the country reported nearly the same number of cases as all four previous years combined, researchers at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report Thursday. The virus cropped up in more geographic regions. And it showed signs of evolving in ways that cause concern.

As NPR reported in April, the virus has picked up mutations that make it more deadly in poultry and less susceptible to antiviral treatments. "Our research shows it can kill all the chickens in our lab within 24 hours," virologist Guan Yi told NPR.

H7N9 isn't your run-of-the-mill bird flu. H7N9 is "the influenza virus with the highest potential pandemic risk,"
the CDC writes in the journal Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.

Two confirmed cases of swine flu in humans at Frederick Memorial Hospital

[link to www.fredericknewspost.com (secure)]

Two pediatric patients were admitted to Frederick Memorial Hospital this week with mild cases of swine influenza, spokeswoman Kelsey Shupe confirmed Wednesday.

The patients were treated at the hospital's pediatric emergency department, Shupe said. She could not immediately say if the two people were still patients.

An outbreak of swine flu among pigs at The Great Frederick Fair spurred the closure of both swine barns and the birthing center on Saturday.
Officials identified a pig with a 106-degree temperature — four degrees higher than normal.

Possible spread of Marburg into Kenya. Note the report mentions the case tested negative after close encounter with a confirmed individual. Yet the negative case died with symptoms consistent with Marburg virus. False negatives anyone? This virus is extremely rare, I will be doing some digging on testing assay methods and see what I can find. We know from experience with Ebola that false negatives are rather likely at certain stages of the virus and given poor sample handling, hot temperatures, and long time or distance traveled you can expect to see some degradation of the samples. Also don't forget that the Ebola transport plane n173pa was in Kenya, just across the border from Uganda cases one day before the index case was admitted to the hospital and several days before results were released. They had pre knowledge. The flights also are hidden and do not show the complete path, only that they land in Nairobi. Since the plane arrived it has made several trips back and forth.

03 NOVEMBER 2017 | NAIROBI – The World Health Organization is helping the Kenyan Ministry of Health guard against the spread of Marburg Virus Disease from neighbouring Uganda.

Health authorities are strengthening preparedness measures in Trans Nzoia and West Pokot counties along the border with Uganda, where an outbreak was officially declared on 19 October.

Although no MVD cases have been confirmed in Kenya, the Ministry of Health has set up a national task force to coordinate all rapid response activities, including WHO, the Kenya Red Cross Society, the the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) and UNICEF. Several joint teams have been deployed to conduct risk assessments and initiate contact tracing and surveillance in Trans Nzoia and West Pokot.

WHO is supporting enhanced surveillance and lab testing, an active search for potential cases and their contacts, community engagement, and isolation and treatment units.

Check out flight aware for tail number tracking. Often following the planes gives us a heads up on activity.

N173pa
N186pa

They have all made numerous I'm talking dozens of trips long after Ebola disappeared. Who knows what or who they are moving all over the globe?

r has been experiencing a large
outbreak of plague. As of [Fri 10 Nov 2017], a total of 2119
confirmed, probable and suspected cases of plague, including 171
deaths (case fatality rate: 8 percent), have been reported by the
Ministry of Health of Madagascar to WHO.

From 1 Aug through 10 Nov 2017, 1618 (76 percent) cases and 72 deaths
have been clinically classified as pneumonic plague, including 365 (23
percent) confirmed, 573 (35 percent) probable and 680 (42 percent)
suspected cases. In addition to the pneumonic cases, 324 (15 percent)
cases of bubonic plague, one case of septicemic plague, and 176
unspecified cases (8 percent), have been reported to WHO (Figure 1
[for Figures, see original URL - Mod.LL]). Up to 82 healthcare workers
have had illness compatible with plague, none of whom have died.

From 1 Aug through 10 Nov, 16 (out of 22) regions of Madagascar have
reported cases. Analamanga Region has been the most affected,
reporting 72 percent of the overall cases (Figures 2 and 3).

As of [Fri 10 Nov 2017], 218 out of 243 (90 percent) contacts under
follow-up were reached and provided with prophylactic antimicrobials.
Since the beginning of the outbreak, a total of 7122 contacts were
identified, 6729 (95 percent) of whom have completed their 7-day
follow up and a course of prophylactic antimicrobials. Only 9 contacts
developed symptoms and became suspected cases.

Laboratory confirmation of plague is being conducted by the Institut
Pasteur of Madagascar, National WHO Collaborating Center for plague in
Madagascar. Up to 25 isolates of _Yersinia pestis_ have been cultured
and all are sensitive to antimicrobials recommended by the National
Program for the Control of Plague.

The number of new cases and hospitalizations of patients due to plague
is declining in Madagascar. The last confirmed bubonic case was
reported on [Tue 24 Oct 2017] and the last confirmed pneumonic case
was reported on [Sat 28 Oct 2017].

Since plague is endemic to parts of Madagascar, WHO expects more cases
to be reported until the end of the typical plague season in April
2018. It is therefore important that control measures continue through
to the end of the plague season.
