I have the windows and doors open, and trying to do homework without zoning out on the sounds of nature.

The lines in the sky only form when there is enough water/ice vapor at flight altitude (25,000 to 50,000) to cause super saturated humidity level 100% RH).

The atmosphere at 100% RH can no longer absorb the excess H20 coming from each of the jets engines exhaust so the newly form line stays.

In fact the h2o from the jet only provides the initial start to the massive snow ball effect that forms these man-made clouds. The trails that you see are made up of material that is already up there (water vapor).

For every part coming from the exhaust H2O 10,000 parts come from the existing atmosphere in forming these line.

The reason some places have clear blue skies and others have lines is simply because of various weather systems that flow overhead. Some will have dry levels of moisture while others will have 100% RH.
