A month of GLP on me! It's my birthday and no one knows it - find out why!
It's my birthday but almost no one I know is aware of it - just those who are the closest family to me and would know anyway (i.e. husband, parents, kids and siblings). My closest friends don't even know.

Let me tell you why and also hopefully inspire a few others along the way...

I live an INCREDIBLY blessed life. Even though I am not wealthy, I have everything I need plus a lot of what I want. I hate to be the center of attention but I also don't celebrate it because I don't want to just waste money on useless crap or a good time for friends and family who can already afford one.

Through my job and travels I have been floored by how much of an odd life I have. Believe it or not there are tons of people out there who really don't know when their next meal will come or how they can afford the most basic of necessities - like even tampons or a toothbrush. Seriously - I have seen abject poverty and it's heartbreaking.

We can talk all day long about the whys and hows but it doesn't really matter much to the point that there are people out there who are not able to know a single moment of freedom or true rest due to their situations. I have overwhelming compassion about this - I literally tear up just thinking about it.

So for the past few years I have taken to using my birthday as a blessing day. Random acts of anonymous kindness that hopefully really brighten someone's day and let them know a moment of joy if possible. Even though I try to do it anonymously, I also pray for each person - God knows who they are. He knows I am loving others because I was first loved and shown true love from Him.

Buying someone's meal in the restaurant, the order from the car behind you, taping $ bills of various denominations or lottery tickets to cereal boxes, packs of diapers or items at the dollar store... I give the cashier enough money to buy the next 20 coffees at the gas station. Tipping crazy all day long. Small gift cards (enough for a meal) for people I see randomly who might need it. You get the picture - nothing grand but a little something for as many people as I can. I spend the money I otherwise would have on a party or more crap on others instead. I try to give every day of my life but on my birthday I go hog wild.

But I'll be honest - it's maybe more selfish than celebrating because it feels so good to do it. It's the ultimate high.

So let's inspire each other -- Reply here with the story of the nicest thing anyone's ever done for you and one of y'all will get next months membership on me.

Thanks for playing and let's hope we get some great stories to inspire everyone to love their fellow man a little bit more than usual today!

When you write a headline that is all about you, it will be difficult to attract the kind of people that are interested in others…

good luck with that.

Ahhh - I knew I'd get one or two of your type to be negative about it but I already copped to it being a little selfish. Cut me some slack AC, and join in the fun. Surely you have a story to share!

yesterday at work, a man was sitting with his wife, eating lunch at a restaurant I bus tables at. I was doing my work, when I notice him wave at me- I expected he may need something, so I go over and ask how I can help him- He starts to hand me a ten dollar bill. I tell him he "doesn't have to" and he stunned me with this reply- "Ah, But I wan't to" with a kind smile. It made my day because I am in poverty, Ten dollars goes a long way in my book(when you make about 700 dollars a month) After his meal I went outside and shook his hand and said this "It means a lot what you did, and it makes a difference. We need more people like you, please keep doing what you're doing."

Ok, but only because you insist :-)

I bought the wife a nice used vehicle several years ago. Shortly after purchasing it our second daughter left for college in a town about 50 miles away so my wife "donated" her vehicle since it was nicer, newer, and most likely more dependable than the one our daughter had.

One night on the way back home after coming home for a visit, my daughter hit a deer that jumped in front of her and totaled the vehicle (S15 Blazer). As it happened I was recounting the story to a friend who had one in excellent shape but with a bad engine and he wanted to sell his. I bought it.

Fast forward a year or so and my oldest daughter and her husband were in a tough time financially. Knowing my son-in-law was a mechanic by trade, we gave them both Blazers and he installed the good engine in the good body. They drove it for awhile then he landed a great job and they were able to buy another later model car.

Since our son-in-law and daughter weren't driving the Blazer, they let his sister, who had 2 children and no vehicle borrow it. She drove the vehicle for about a year until her sig other found a better job at which time they returned the Blazer.

Move forward to last year when my business failed (not a bad thing since that was the impetus which caused me to return to The Lord after many years running from Him). The wife and I have struggled since and when my truck went down we were unable to spend the money to fix it. I just learned the other day that our oldest and her hubby insist on giving us a gift -- you guessed it. The blazer is coming back home. It will be a real blessing, as it has been to so many since we originally bought it.

I apologize for the length, but you asked for it :-)

That's great - see something that can be trivial to one makes a huge difference to someone else. And it's not about money - it's about reaching out and connecting to one another through goodwill. And paying it forward.

Two days ago there were two threads going and several of us were giving upgrades to people who couldn't afford them. I sent a four month upgrade to someone.

Within minutes, the threads were deleted. I wrote to two nice mods and suggested they leave those threads alone. GLP could have more paid subscribers if some of us are willing to help others.

In all fairness, I'd like to point out that I'm not looking for an upgrade. Look at my user number and it'll indicate (I believe), how long I've been here -- quite some time.

How awesome! Happy Birthday!

Just for a FYI, my kid and I decided we were going to do something good today. Turns out, I didn't have the energy to do too much, but we did slip a $10 to a homeless guy and bought overly-priced candy from a local fundraiser group lol.

Turned out to be a pretty great day around here. Hope yours was too!

The problem with those without an upgrade is being banned. When I was "anonymous," I was banned on a daily basis.

If I don't sign in here, I am banned. Just did it today....happened two times. I automatically re-subscribe every four months, but the ban says it's because of my IP. I really don't blame GLP. It's takes money to run a website.
I'm happy to pay, and I'm happy to help others who can't afford it.

I don't celebrate my birthday OP so never thought about doing this.
I do this for Christmas.I don't need anything so I help as many as I can when I feel the need to help all through the Holiday season. Its such a blessing to do things like this Anonymously.Thats the way I feel all giving should be done.
