Major Laver, a public affairs spokeswoman at Air Force Global Strike Command at Barksdale Air Force Base in Louisiana, which oversees all ICBM bases in the Air Force, told KRTV that the cheating happened at Malmstrom Air Force Base and involved 34 nuclear officers. Here’s some key points to help understand the situation: Who has been implicated in the cheating? Thirty-four missile crew members have been decertified and their security clearances suspended. The group includes second lieutenants, first lieutenants and captains. Those are the first three officer ranks in the Air Force. Commissioning as an officer in the Air Force requires a four-year college degree. They were decertified from nuclear duties through the Personnel Reliability Program. It’s a Department of Defense program designed to ensure that nuclear duties are performed by reliable airmen and civilians. The empty silos will remain in warm status, meaning they will remain fully operational and can be armed with missiles at any time.... The New START treaty allows the triad to remain, but in reduced numbers. President Barack Obama has called for further reductions beyond New START levels, which has met resistance in Congress so far. Because the silos will remain fully operational, no ICBM squadrons will be cut, according to defense officials. An environmental assessment also is no longer needed. The environmental assessment has been a sticking point between the Defense Department and congressional lawmakers from nuclear states, including Montana’s delegation....'
