Can't wait till you can verify tomorrow :) *crosses fingers* Eireann~ I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me. - Galatians 2:20 |

This will only be the fifth extra-terrestrial body we have soft landed on after the Moon, Venus, Mars and Titan. Quoting: K Hall [link to www.youtube.com] In space no one can [Rosie O'Donnell belch]. Quoting: Dr. Astro Yup. I've checked Simbad, 2MASS, and the WISE source catalogs, nothing should be at those coordinates. I'm becoming increasingly convinced that it's the Rosetta probe. I'm going to re-image the area again tomorrow or whenever the first opportunity presents itself with the same scope, the "star" should no longer be there. I will keep my fingers crossed that you can re-image that area soon. If you are around when they finish the burn and if ESA updates their feed; [link to twitter.com (secure)] post something here if you don't mind, otherwise I will hear from you tomorrow, good luck. I don't want to make too big a stink about it until I confirm it. If I can confirm it tomorrow though I'll send it to the ESA. Would it be irony if it wasn't the Rosetta but an asteroid headed for earth? Astro discovers it. Or nibiru. I hope it's nibiru. :kapnibiru: |

If it is a call out thread then report it to the mods and let them sort it out. I think Dr Astro is quite happy and if he isn't he can tell me. I didn't title anything Re: Dr Astro until after he posted a significant image, 8 hours after the thread started and 7 hours after he joined it so unless I can call him out backwards in time then not guilty, grow a brian, moran. |

Nothing new here if you ask me. Well if you are going to fake something then at least don't make it drag on for ten years and give it some aliens and lasers like Star Wars. Apart from making space nerds unduly excited, what is the purpose of faking Rosetta? |

If we knew what the smallest object you could resolve in that image was then we could see if it is plausible, I suppose he has already taken that into consideration. We will see later. BTW have you tried this yet ? [link to www.solarsystemscope.com] |

BTW have you tried this yet ? [link to www.solarsystemscope.com] Well it's not about resolving it, it's about just detecting it as a point like light source. Normally impossible from that distance, but I took a long shot that the extra contribution of engines firing and the exhaust gas cloud would make it detectable, not resolvable though. I'll know at 1:30pm eastern today (or shortly thereafter). That's when I've scheduled t17 to shoot the same region again. |

Can we say doom on? or what? Can someone explain me please? Quoting: Anonymous Coward 54499090 Greetings.- This is about a space probe called Rosetta launched ten years ago. In a few months time it will go into orbit around a comet and in November it will launch a small probe to land on the comet and send back information. By the time the mission is over we will know a lot more about comets. Last night it started the first braking manoeuvre designed to match its speed to the comet. After such a long time in space no one was completely sure if it would work, but it has worked successfully. Dr Astro has used a telescope in Australia to get an image of the spacecraft. Later today he is going to try to confirm what he has seen. GLP loves comets. |

Can I put your name in the thread title and would it be accurate to call it a record breaking image? K Don't put my name in the thread title, mods might not like it. If it pans out, I think it will be the farthest man-made object ever successfully photographed (if you count the gas it emitted as being part of it). I could be wrong, but I cannot think of any other probe ever photographed past 3 AUs before. It cleared up and imaging is starting... |

I was always an unusual girl. My mother told me I had a chameleon soul, no moral compass pointing due north, no fixed personality; just an inner indecisiveness that was as wide and as wavering as the ocean... And if I said I didn't plan for it to turn out this way I'd be lying... Because I was born to be the other woman. Who belonged to no one, who belonged to everyone. Who had nothing, who wanted everything, with a fire for every experience and an obsession for freedom that terrified me to the point that I couldn't even talk about it,and pushed me to a nomadic point of madness that both dazzled and dizzied me. |
