This really pisses me off.... really pisses me off.

I managed many of immunization programs for USAID in foreign countries. Many of the volunteers on my projects were killed precisely because anti-government groups thought it was a U.S. government plot. I had several close calls for the same reason -- and just for being a valuable target.

There was no DNA gathering -- it was a legitimate effort in cooperation with NGO's and the countries involved to promote health.

But how can any country, or any community in those countries, ever trust the U.S. government again? How can any international volunteer justify risking their life by participating in one of these programs...

AND, what real damage will this do to the children in those countries who very much need these immunizations, screenings and treatments -- T.B., polio, malnutrition, birth defects... 3 out of 10 children we brought into these health programs needed follow-up care.

I was one of the few that would take on these high-risk projects even before this news came out -- no one will do it now.
