Don't get too excited, a 9 foot GW is small in Oz. Fishing in the boat in metro waters ie less than 10nm off shore, i have seen 5 meter (18ft) plus GWs.
We have some big GWs around these parts.

The documentary aired here last November. "The Search For The Oceans Super Predator".

Maybe you guys are now just getting it. I see it's on the Smithsonian Channel.

They end up coming to the terrifying hypothesis that a "colossal cannibal great white shark" – estimated at 16 feet long and over 2 tons – snacked on his lil' buddy. The scientists offer several suggestions as to how this nightmare become reality: Perhaps this was a territorial dispute, or maybe the larger shark was so hungry it was driven to attack another of its own species.

16 foot is average size around these parts. Hardly colossal.

When they were filming "JAWS", they consulted Ron and Valerie Taylor, who told Producers "Bruce" the mechanical shark was too small.
Producers flew to South Oz and saw for himself. "We're gonna need a bigger shark".
All the live shots were filmed Down Under.

I can't tell if you're mocking me or not but scientists discovered that Giant Squids exist in 2004.

Or some unknown monster of the deep has reappeared and has eaten the shark. Don't go near the water.:)

We have been recently discovering animals thought to have been extinct,like that Prehistoric Shark discovered off the coast of Japan.

Maybe some of those giant creatures aren't as extinct as we thought they were.

Killer whales are larger than Great White sharks and have been know to bit them IN HALF IN ONE BITE....

Why would it vomit it up after it had swallowed it?

Maybe it wasn't big enough to swallow the whole thing.

No, not mocking you at all. I was watching something on the idiot box, forget what, but they had discovered this enormous giant squid.

Besides, we know almost nothing about what's lurking in the deep blue, could be some unknown species.

That or they haven't even been discovered yet. Man really doesn't know everything.

That's pretty much what they now think happened. The researcher/film maker can't say for sure that the 2.9m female was devoured.

9ft is hardly huge...

The only thing that would be able to swallow that big of a shark is a fucking megalodon.

This was white on white crime.

Something in the 27-30ft range could easily eat a 9 footer.

9 feet is just a pre-teen. LA pod eats them for an appetizer.

People want to know the truth about the shark-eating-shark, so here it is.

In late 2003 we tagged a white shark approximately 3m in length off south-west Western Australia with a tag that collects data on swim depth, water temperature and light levels. The tag records data at regular intervals against a date/time stamp. The tag was programmed to release from the shark on a pre-programmed date, float to the surface and transmit the data collected back to us via satellite. These ‘archival’ tags are commercially produced and are in common use by researchers around the world.

The tag surfaced approximately two weeks earlier than programmed, in early 2004. This is not unusual. It washed ashore Stradbroke Island and was returned to us.


When we looked at its data there was a period of approximately three weeks just before the tag surfaced where the temperature recorded was higher than the surrounding sea, but where the tag continued to ‘dive’ in a pattern consistent with a white shark. During this time, the tag failed to record light. Data before and after suggest the tag was functioning normally. The temperature recorded for these three weeks was consistent with that of the core body temperature of a white shark but too low for something like a killer whale.

At one point the shark that had eaten the tag dived to a depth of 570 m – this is not unusual for white sharks – it is normal behaviour. This dive took place about one week prior to the tag recording the higher temperatures (not immediately before as some have reported) and the two events are not related.

All evidence suggests that the tag had been eaten by another white shark.

We have seen white sharks biting each other before, sometimes removing pieces of tissue in the process. We concluded that this was the most likely explanation – One shark bit off a little more than he could chew and ended up swallowing the tag.

We never concluded that the 3m shark was consumed by another much larger shark.

And that folks, is the truth.
