Should Christians really totally abstain from alcoholic drinks?
Or does God tell us we can drink moderately?

FACTS TO KNOW

1) The Bible does teach total abstinence from alcohol. Both the main Hebrew word for wine and the Greek word for wine can mean either fermented grape juice or intoxicating wine. The English word wine originally had two meanings also - unfermented juice or alcoholic drink.

2) In the Bible, verses to show God approves of wine are speaking about unfermented juice. Verses that expose the evils of wine are speaking about intoxicating wine.

3) The Bible says alcoholic drink is evil. It is not just the amount one drinks that makes drinking a sin. God condemns the drink itself. (Prov 20:1 KJV) Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise.

4) God does not lead us into evil; He delivers us from it. He does not teach us to practice evil in moderation. Jesus did not make, use, approve, commend, or tell us to use intoxicating wine.

5) God made man to have fellowship with Him. Alcohol goes directly to the brain, the communication center of the body. It interferes with God’s purpose for mankind.

Jesus was the ultimate party guest!! HE turned water into wine....lots of it!! In biblical times wedding parties typically lasted three or more days, hence the wine runeth out....Jesus made MORE wine at the request of his mother, this after three hard days of partying and drinking wine by all the guests. Anyone who thinks drinking is against Christian dogma is sadly mistaken. If you believe in the scriptures, Jesus' own actions condone and approve the partaking of said beverages, cheers!!

Re: Should Christians really totally abstain from alcoholic drinks?
Biblical wine is fermented grape juice, aka real wine. Grapes vines only produce at particular times of year and the unfermented juice does not keep very long, hence the use by dates on the cartons. Wine, however, can keep for a very long time. One need not read the Bible for proof that booze ruins lives. There is a great cloud of witnesses surrounding us that testifies to the fact. Most people cannot have one or two drinks and stop before they become drunk. Many would probably not bother drinking at all if they did not get a buzz from it. So it seems that it is not the wine that is the problem, but the one consuming it.

So your experience is that people drink grape juice at weddings? The master of the feast at the wedding of Cana would go out of his way to comment on the quality of one glass of grape juice being better than the next? Why would he talk about people normally bringing out the lesser quality stuff after guests have drank freely, first? Perhaps after the initial buzz, subsequent glasses go down easier?

From what i have read, He did not really talk about it much at all. According to the scriptures, however, turning water into Wine was His first miracle. There are denominations that are tee totalers and they have their reasons, but wine is wine. You have been turned off to Christianity?

Call yourself whatever you want or nothing at all- Your beliefs are you own and your relationship with God is your own. I don't think he came back to talk about Wine, but lets be real, alcohol is what was served at celebrations for thousands of years before and after Christ and is a part of this world. Wine is not a sin, It can lead to sin yes, but what is in a man's heart is there for God to see always- while wine sometimes lets us glimpse what is in a man's heart.

I don't hold the belief that Jesus came to talk about alcohol. I am basically, at this point, not a "Christian"
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 31444157

Call yourself whatever you want or nothing at all- Your beliefs are you own and your relationship with God is your own. I don't think he came back to talk about Wine, but lets be real, alcohol is what was served at celebrations for thousands of years before and after Christ and is a part of this world. Wine is not a sin, It can lead to sin yes, but what is in a man's heart is there for God to see always- while wine sometimes lets us glimpse what is in a man's heart.
God Bless

Re: Should Christians really totally abstain from alcoholic drinks?

 Quoting: Hymn 31008511

Using alcohol in and of itself is not bad or frowned upon in the bible?! The misuse of alcohol is what is being addressed. There are many verses which condone and allow for wine, and even STRONG drink for various occasions or reasons.

So, YES, you can drink as long as you do it moderately and in a respectable manner. Occasionally you might imbibe too much by accident also (That bottle wasn't 80 proof, but 100 proof!!), but to seek after it continuously and have it consume your life is what is being warned against.dasbier

Christians should refrain from drunkenness.

If it is easier just not to drink, I don't think Christians are under any command to drink.

1. Drinking alcohol = no sin!
2. Get Drunk = sin! (because you don't control yourself in these situations and this leads to other sins)
3. Wine in the bible is wine (not unfermented whatever). Wine has a spiritual meaning (the older it gets the stronger and better it gets - think about it!)

Some people think not putting on their seatbelt is a sin against God because the state told them so.

I advocate you put your seatbelt on for health reasons. Not tax reasons, or romans reasons

Jesus turned water into wine . Nuff said
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 55650373

Exactly! Back in old days drinking normal water could and probably would given you a serious water born disease. That's why so much wine/beer etc was consumed. It was safer than drinking the water.
