When they become the Registrar, hosting provider and content provider/manager for a large portion of sites out there, they will impose their law in accordance with their vision of how the internet should be. 'Web.com stocks down 27% after google announcement...' 'Godaddy worth alot less...' 'Google takes a step, every registrar is gonna shudder in their tracks...' 'they are going to go after hosting next you can be sure..' 'this is a big, big, big deal...' 'this is the beginning of the domain industry...' If there are other domainers here, i would recommend watching the whole video, these guys have been industry leaders for many years and generally have good insight. Anonymous Coward User ID: 68476868 United States 05/18/2015 08:48 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | We, as a small interactive business, have been chipping away (albeit, nearly fruitless) at this juggernaut in our own small way for a few years now. In 2011, When Google started the pilot program of "Get Your Business Online, Texas!" which today has simply become "Get Your Business Online" ( [link to www.gybo.com (secure)] our small interactive agency began reaching out to local chambers of commerce (some of which we were even members of) and TX State Reps. who were blindly supporting this bullshite. The fact that Sheila Jackson Lee is one of their marquee pimps of this program should speak volumes, [link to www.gybo.com (secure)] but back in 2011, even big names in the GOP were supporting it. On the surface, it seems benign and maybe even noble...after all- it's not like our business model can survive on businesses which only have the budget for free interactive services. But it's less to do with that, and more to do with A) local chambers and governments promoting global juggernauts who can provide "free" over local upstanding businesses, and B) something inherently bad about getting as many small businesses as possible, suckling the teet of a single giant business which can turn off the spigot any time and leave many business owners in a world of hurt. Despite any moral or ethical arguments to be made against Goog, it's simply bad business for any business (let alone tens of thousands) to become so dependent on a single business. I don't know why it has become lost on people that Goog, at the end of the day, is a glorified aggregator making money hand over fist off presenting others' IP as their own. Step back, and it's even worse when you know the leaders of Goog, such as Eric Schmidt, use their "foundations" to levy war against entire industries, like say the Schmidt Family Foundation versus all fossil fuel companies (i.e. any energy company not producing Goog approved "green" energy) and we now have a huge problem. Paying to advertise on a network which actively works against you ten-fold. That's just a single industry, what happens when Goog decides the fate of others (health, food, IT...political candidates)? Scary. Oh, wait...did someone say 'free?!' |
