For what it's worth and i dont know if it has been mentoined but i would add boxes of bullon or veg stock cubes into the list.

Just half a cube into a 2 cup rice/ 1 inch of water cooking pot will give you a flavoured rice that will ensure eating just the basic staples such as just rice can be tasty and filling AND quick n simple and incs salt etc!

Add a cube to veggies and water for a soup or stew etc - lots of flavour from very little space, cost and weight.

Anyway my my 2cents hf

Great suggestion!

Totally agree. Bouillon cubes are inexpensive, easy to store with a long shelf life, and can add a lot of flavor & variety.

I'd also suggest dried/powdered spices or seasonings, to give yourself some variety.

And remember to think OUTSIDE of just food. Hygiene, first aid, sanitation. Toilet paper, soap, laundry soap, disinfectant, garbage bags (heck, save your plastic grocery sacks), medications, shampoo, band-aids & bandages, cleaning products to sanitize (bleach, pine sol, etc.)

Most people think you have to be well off to prepare. That is crap. You can prepare with beans, rice, a few spices, pancake mix that only needs water, a few cans of shortening (lasts the longest), salt, sugar....
 Quoting: WhiteAngel

I had some of that pancake mix that only needs water, factory sealed in those last-until-doomsday cans. Within 6 months they were all bulging. Buy at your own risk.
 Quoting: Surely You Jest

This is the kind I use. One friend has opened after 8 years and still good. I have only used up to 4 years. I rotate often.

 Quoting: WhiteAngel

You can also cheap out on this - Bisquick (I think) makes a pancake mix that comes in a plastic jug, you just add water, shake & pour. It's cheap & readily available at any grocery store. We use it for camping, but it'd be an easy shelf-stable item.

Also, DOLLAR TREE, people. They sell shelf-stable milk in cartons for $1. Bottled water, first aid supplies, hygiene items, disinfectants, bags of dried rice & beans. Heck even if you only have $10 you can get several items to bolster up your supplies.

Most people think you have to be well off to prepare. That is crap. You can prepare with beans, rice, a few spices, pancake mix that only needs water, a few cans of shortening (lasts the longest), salt, sugar. The list goes on but for a bug-out-bag, think about only putting 3 days of food, a change of clothes, extra socks and GOOD walking shoes. Several lighters and or matches in a sealed baggie. I vacuum packed mine. A tarp, a sleeping bag that has been put in one of those space saver bags that you vacuum all the air out to make everything as small as possible.

The bag needs to be checked once every 6 months to renew the food, water and any meds you might have in there. You need a good map of your area, usually a recreational map is best and once again, in a sealed baggie along with copies of your DL, birth certificate, car and medical insurance, house info and a few family photos. Oh and money. Real money not plastic.
 Quoting: WhiteAngel

You are 100% right. You don't need a lot of money to prepare.

There are a lot of things you can do at no cost, immediately.

Start saving empty containers (milk jugs, soda bottles, etc.) - wash them out & use for water storage. Other empty jars such as pasta sauce, pickles or similar can be washed out & used to store dry goods such as dried beans, rice, sugar, flour, to keep things dry & keep bugs out.

Walk around your home & do an inspection. Do you have things that need to be repaired or can be patched? Look for items you can easily fix yourself to help secure your home.

Consider preparing an outdoor cooking area in the event of power outage. Dig a small pit & line/surround with rocks or bricks. Watch freecycle or Craigslist for items you can use.

If you have a little bit of money available, and want to add to your preps, head to the dollar store. Even on just $5 or $10 you can get a few things. Dollar Tree has a huge variety of items for just $1 including shelf-stable milk in cartons, dried rice & beans, dry pasta, spices/seasonings, sugar, flour, disinfectants such as bleach, first aid kit items.

Re: Being Prepared - Updated Basic Food List On Page One
I was stocking up for 3 months, then 6 months, then 9 months and finally for a year. Since I have a family of 4, the numbers below are what I worked with for each 3 months

GRAINS
150 lbs of Wheat
25 lbs of Flour
25 lbs of Corn Meal
25 lbs of Oats
50 lbs of Rice
25 lbs of Pasta

300 lbs total of Grains

LEGUMES
30 lbs of Dry Beans
5 lbs of Lima Beans
10 lbs of Soy Beans
5 lbs of Split Peas
5 lbs of Lentils
5 lbs of Dry Soup Mix

60 lbs Total of Legumes

FATS & OILS
4 lbs Shortening
2 gals Vegetable Oil
2 qts Mayonnaise
1 qrt Salad Dressing
4 lbs of Peanut Butter

25 lbs Total of Fats & Oils

MILK & DAIRY
60 lbs of Dry Milk
12 cans of Evaporated Milk
13 lbs of Other Dairy

75 lbs Total of Milk & Dairy

SUGARS
3 lbs of Honey
40 lbs of Sugar
3 lbs of Brown Sugar
1 lb of Molasses
3 lbs of Corn Syrup
3 lbs of Jams & Jelly
6 lbs of Powdered Fruit Drink
1 lb of Flavored Gelatin (Jello)

60lbs Total of Sugars

COOKING ESSENTIALS
1 lb of Baking Powder (I don't store for LTS as it doesn't have a long shelf life, 6 months to 18 months only.)

1 lb of Baking Soda (this needs more also for cleaning, brushing teeth, as a deodorant, lots of uses)
0.5 lbs of Yeast
5 lbs of Salt (You need iodized and plain or canning salt for canning and preserving meats - so plan on more - 20lbs)

0.5 lbs of Vinegar (I think this needs increased to 1-2 gallons per person for canning and cleaning. You also need several gallons of apple cider vinegar - like Braggs which is unprocessed and has what they call the mother. You will use this to make elixirs for flu and colds)

Black pepper (whole lasts indefinitely, just remember a pepper grinder)
Onion/Garlic Powder
Chili Powder
Vanilla extract
Cream of Tartar
Corn Starch

To make 1 tablespoon of baking powder:
2 teaspoon of cream of tarter (shelf life = indefinite)
1 teaspoon of baking soda (shelf life = indefinite)

Use within two weeks. Only make up what you need at a time. If you are going to store for 2 weeks, add one teaspoon of cornstarch to keep it from clumping.

FRUITS
40 lbs of Apples (canned or dried)
40 lbs of Applesauce
30 lbs of Banana Chips
35 lbs of Fruit Mixture
40 lbs of Fruit Juice

185 lbs Total of Fruits

VEGETABLES
30 lbs of Corn
30 lbs of Peas
30 lbs of Green Beans
30 lbs of Carrots
40 lbs of Potatoes
20 lbs of Tomatoes

185 lbs Total of Vegetables

Though the LDS say nothing about canned meats, I have added them to my preps. Add Alaska salmon - it has one of the longest shelf life of meat next to tuna and Spam. Tuna, well it might be contaminated. Spam, learn to like it along with Vienna Sausage. Also add canned chicken and beef if you can find it. Canned ham also lasts a long time, I just can't find it.

WATER
30 gals of Water (one month supply, more if you have room. This is only for drinking and cooking)
1 gal of bleach (shelf life is only 6 months to one year)
1-pound bag of calcium hypochlorite would work better than liquid bleach for long term storage.
-------------------------

Remember there won't be any running to the store when you need comfort food. We all snack (I call it grazing for my family) which adds up more than we think it does. Some chips here, some candy there, some ice cream, or whatever it is that makes you feel better when you are stressed or sad. Those are the things you have to stock up on also. If they are missing, it will just add to the stress of the whole situation!

99.9% of people that think they are set for survival in an event that requires survival WILL NOT survive.

Stocking up on food is pointless because it will be taken from you and your home by people that are stronger. Expecting to stay in your existing home is foolish.

What you need for survival is a weapon, knowledge, and street smarts.

Weapon to protect yourself and take from those who cannot.

Knowledge to eat and make shelter from whatever is available.

Street smarts to know who to trust and what to do in the context of really bad people.

Everything else is pointless.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 59628482

Some people are smart and have food and weapons. They will take anything valuable from your carcass if you try to take what is theirs.

I am still amazed when these tough guys break into peaceful prepper threads with this line about they are going to take all your stuff.

Don't they realize how heavily armed this country is, and how foolish they are to think they can just go around taking stuff? These are the people who will get wiped out immediately by armed, civic minded individuals.

Walmart sells Augason Farms cans and Emergency Essentials that last 10 years, freeze dried foods, with serving size printed on the label. they deliver.

I added the lid opener.

my old bags of rice were dusted with DE and the bugs didn't get to em, but anything in plastic is vulnerable.

My first preps I put in Mylar and everything after I put in vacuum bags. Long term items I will rotate every 10 years and shorter term every 5 years. Seems to be working so far. The vacuum bagged items should go in 5 gal buckets to protect against rodents if this is a problem in one's area.

I've heard of the use of DE just never used it myself. Good suggestions.
 Quoting: WhiteAngel

DE is awesome
diatomaceous earth. it's a powder from siliceous sedimentary rock, ground up it makes razor sharp edges that are deadly to bugs and eggs. but not harmful to human consumption. all natural.

used in the garden to keep slugs and bugs off plants. used to feed my quail for harder shell eggs and she bathes in it. pets love to roll in it. I sprinkle it around my rice and food supply, no bugs. it's awesome.

also works as a parasite cleanse. use it in the pool to keep the water free of parasites.
it's not expensive. 50 pound bag cost $30 but $40 to ship. comes in smaller containers for more.

Their stock in OTC medicinals has really grown. i've picked up alcohol and hydrogen peroxide, which have dual duty sterilization/medicinal value. Also muscular ache patches, cortisone, triple-antibiotic and analgesic salves, their asprin is not a very good buy so I skip it, bandages, milk of magnesia and other odds and ends.

They have good buys on hand soap and cheap scissors and metal racks (multipurpose).

The shelf stable milk is pretty good. I keep it on hand for cooking. It lasts a long time in the fridge too after opening.

I would avoid the first aid kits as they are assembled in China in prisons, jails and labor camps (drug rehab centers) under filthy conditions, I think you are better off putting your own together. You can get decent bags with zippers cheap at Salvation Army.

Good call! We put together our own first aid kits - pre-assembled are usually not a good buy anyway. You can get plenty of supplies at the dollar stores though.

Pain relievers are usually a better buy at Target or Walmart; you can usually get a larger bottle of ibuprofen or acetaminophen for around $1.

5 lbs of Split Peas
5 lbs of Lentils
5 lbs of Dry Soup Mix

60 lbs Total of Legumes

FATS & OILS
4 lbs Shortening
2 gals Vegetable Oil
2 qts Mayonnaise
1 qrt Salad Dressing
4 lbs of Peanut Butter

25 lbs Total of Fats & Oils

MILK & DAIRY
60 lbs of Dry Milk
12 cans of Evaporated Milk
13 lbs of Other Dairy

75 lbs Total of Milk & Dairy

SUGARS
3 lbs of Honey
40 lbs of Sugar
3 lbs of Brown Sugar
1 lb of Molasses
3 lbs of Corn Syrup
3 lbs of Jams & Jelly
6 lbs of Powdered Fruit Drink
1 lb of Flavored Gelatin (Jello)

60lbs Total of Sugars

COOKING ESSENTIALS
1 lb of Baking Powder (I don't store for LTS as it doesn't have a long shelf life, 6 months to 18 months only.)

1 lb of Baking Soda (this needs more also for cleaning, brushing teeth, as a deodorant, lots of uses)
0.5 lbs of Yeast
5 lbs of Salt (You need iodized and plain or canning salt for canning and preserving meats - so plan on more - 20lbs)

0.5 lbs of Vinegar (I think this needs increased to 1-2 gallons per person for canning and cleaning. You also need several gallons of apple cider vinegar - like Braggs which is unprocessed and has what they call the mother. You will use this to make elixirs for flu and colds)

Black pepper (whole lasts indefinitely, just remember a pepper grinder)
Onion/Garlic Powder
Chili Powder
Vanilla extract
Cream of Tartar
Corn Starch

To make 1 tablespoon of baking powder:
2 teaspoon of cream of tarter (shelf life = indefinite)
1 teaspoon of baking soda (shelf life = indefinite)

Use within two weeks. Only make up what you need at a time. If you are going to store for 2 weeks, add one teaspoon of cornstarch to keep it from clumping.

FRUITS
40 lbs of Apples (canned or dried)
40 lbs of Applesauce
30 lbs of Banana Chips
35 lbs of Fruit Mixture
40 lbs of Fruit Juice

185 lbs Total of Fruits

VEGETABLES
30 lbs of Corn
30 lbs of Peas
30 lbs of Green Beans
30 lbs of Carrots
40 lbs of Potatoes
20 lbs of Tomatoes

185 lbs Total of Vegetables

Though the LDS say nothing about canned meats, I have added them to my preps. Add Alaska salmon - it has one of the longest shelf life of meat next to tuna and Spam. Tuna, well it might be contaminated. Spam, learn to like it along with Vienna Sausage. Also add canned chicken and beef if you can find it. Canned ham also lasts a long time, I just can't find it.

WATER
30 gals of Water (one month supply, more if you have room. This is only for drinking and cooking)
1 gal of bleach (shelf life is only 6 months to one year)
1-pound bag of calcium hypochlorite would work better than liquid bleach for long term storage.
-------------------------

Remember there won't be any running to the store when you need comfort food. We all snack (I call it grazing for my family) which adds up more than we think it does. Some chips here, some candy there, some ice cream, or whatever it is that makes you feel better when you are stressed or sad. Those are the things you have to stock up on also. If they are missing, it will just add to the stress of the whole situation!

I never said that. You must have a serious reading comprehension problem.

What I said was when SHTF he and his family will be primary targets. Not only by hungry masses, but government bodies as well.

Unless you have a completely remote hideaway with no easy access that others can find you, you will not be much better off than all the others. Look at any war zone currently existing around the world. There arent any people in them that are just hanging out with their stocked up supplies. When SHTF everything gets raided. All your supplies will be gone rather quickly.

When SHTF I'm not running to the grocery stores like the other lemmings ... I'm going straight for people that have stocked up supplies. And they are very easy to spot and locate. Their supplies will become my supplies, whether they like it or not.

You can also buy canned heat (alcohol fuel) that will burn about 2 hrs from Dollar Tree. If they do not have it in the store, you can buy it on-line and pick it up at the store

[link to www.dollartree.com (secure)]

You have to buy it by the case online, 24/case.

This is one of the best prepper items around, I think,
 Quoting: Lily o' the Valley

Word of warning, I bought two of these cheap as chips in a local supermarket. When I got home I did some investigation and this stuff is known as chafing fuel.

It is only really used to maintain heat on pre-cooked foods and isn't ideal for direct cooking from cold.

from their page;

"The best way to keep food warm at large gatherings. Canned fuel is designed to burn under chaffing dishes for up to 2 hours to maintain heat for buffets, cookouts and banquets. They can even be used as emergency heat or to cook with while camping or in emergency situations. Case includes 24 – 2.8-oz. Fancy Heat® canned fuel."

"prepped" since 1980....back then we were just called right wing fringe element gun nuts....
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 15483798

Grew up in Gulf Coast area, always prepped with hurricanes in mind. Parents grew up during Depression and added in consideration for economic hardship, even tho we were reasonably well-off.

Nobody in this area considered those who stored up against adversity as unusual; they were just considered fortunate to be able to do it.

Nowadays with increased mobility there are many here from places who never experienced severe environmental issues and even more from a generation who never suffered economic deprivation or went hungry (they had decent jobs or govt. $$$)

It is important to encourage those people to put provisions aside to insure their continued existence with a relative degree of comfort.

i'll never have the time and energy to prepare properly, nor do i care.

If the doom is big enough to last years, none of you preppers will have any benefits other than living a bit longer and even that is not a sure thing

there will be gangs.. very dangerous gangs in such situations and all your stored water and will not be a big help when they come for you.
prepare as much as you want but know that preparing food alone is one of many things you should take into consideration.

Real survivalists got some serious plans for probably half a decade.

When SHTF all laws are suspended. There's no such thing as "criminals". Morality is not a factor in a survival situation, and do-gooders and bleeding hearts will be first to go as victims.

Its survival of the fittest and smartest.

If you think people will behave themselves and act accordingly with existing laws and rules of society .... you are dead wrong.
