Copper is the best natural antimicrobial, not anti-viral, material out there. BTW. One could place a clean piece of copper in your water storage container for its antimicrobial properties. Not a guarantee but the right idea. |

Here is my plan, not great but it is what I can do. I have been saving 2-liter soda bottles for a year from our family and friends and have over 100 that are not being used at this point. Clean them like mentioned above, except you don't need to let them dry out. Fill them with water and put in a drop of bleach, seal and label with the date you filled. Because there is a worry about the plastics, even so called safe ones leaching harmful chemicals into the water, many only store their water for 6 months. I have done enough research that I will store ours for a year or two. If you do not have a dropper for putting ONE drop of water, you can do what I do. I put a little bleach in a 1/4 cup and dip a thin wooden dowel or skewer in and let it drop one drop into the bottle. Stored water goes flat and doesn't taste good. When you first open a container of water that has been stored for a year or so, pour it back and forth between two containers to add air back into it. This improves the taste big time! 3.79 liters = 1 gallon, so you have a bit more than a gallon with two 2-liter bottles of water. 50 gallons of water means 100 bottles of 2-liter size, tons of room needed. You can lay they on their sides and stack up. Note: the bleach needs to be regular house hold bleach with no scents added and not the splash-less kind either. Just plain old fashion bleach. ========================================= The next thing I have planned for water is rain catching from my roof. My roof is asphalt and dangerous to collect water off from all the chemicals it will leach so I bought several rolls of plastic drop cloth from Home Depot. It is cheap and you will always need some for something, so make sure you have several extra rolls. I plan to cover my roof before a storm comes in, and make sure the gutters are still cleaned out. Barrels will be on both ends of the house to collect the water. Take off the bottom end of the down spout and adjust so it goes straight into the barrels. You will want to let the first bunch of rain flow out, just to make sure you are getting clean water. The web is full of ideas on how to do this, here is one: www.wikihow.com/Build-a-Rainwater...ion-System If you have acid rain, you can make a two or three part filtration system, letting each barrel trickle down thru sand. Again there are many web sites about this and I will let you do a little research there. It would be smart if you live in an area that doesn't have natural sand in your soil, to get several bags of "play-sand" so that you can filter your water when shtf. ============================== Get a water bob for your bathtub. www.amazon.com/Aqua-Pod-Kit-Emerg...ge+bladder www.waterbob.com/Welcome.do;jsess...FA67F4C3EC FYI, the above site is out of stock as were two other sites I went to. I have seen them at only $17 so they are cheaper than the one above but ti gives you an idea what I am talking about. 65+ (most will hold 100 gallons or more) gallons of clean drinking water is priceless!!! I have 3 100gal camuflaged tanks in the backyard for rain water collection and a gravity filter. How long will 100 gals last? I wasn't thinking of a water collection system, but barrels willed with water. A water collection system is best, of course, but I'm not sure we would be able to do that here. If you have a house, put it in the backyard camouflaged if needed. Many states do NOT allow rain water collection, utter BS but after any catastrophe, who would care except looters. Keep it out of site. Learn your surroundings. Learn to look like you are struggling. Never flaunt that you aren't losing weight. Halloween make-up kits and hair dye are another thing to think about. You want to look like you are suffering like everyone else. Blondes and redheads need to dye that hair dark brown or black. Tanning lotions. You want to blend in if you don't live in a predominately White area. No explanation is needed. Makes you wonder about all plastic jugs but to be safe use soda and juice bottles only. Quoting: WhiteAngel As for people who think they are coming to my home to take my supplies - Good Luck. Being even a little prepared usually means being able to defend you and your family. Enough said. No one knows who is prepared and who isn't. One has to be prepared to bug out and knowing when that time is right to do so. If you live in a city, get out immediately. If you live in the suburbs you will have to watch and see when to leave. I never considered myself a prepper. My family came from a long line of ranchers, farmers and just rural life. It was nothing for them to stock up on supplies once or twice a year so large quantities of goods was always on hand. They were outdoors people who went hunting and fishing. It was normal life to them. As a city girl, I picked up on always having extra of everything. If there wasn't 4 jars of peanut butter in the pantry then it was time to by more, just as an example. Once a year 100lbs of pinto beans, 50lbs of green chili and 50-100lbs bags of dry goods. That was and should be normal living. I save glass and plastic jars - my husband teases me that I am a bottle horder - for different foods. I use these for herbs and spices I dry myself in a food dehydrator, label and vacuum seal. For me personally, I use the food dehydrator to preserve food instead of a canner. Canning destroys more vitamins than dehydrating. Plus, I am just a little chicken when it comes to a canner, one exploded near me when I was very young and I just don't trust them, even though I know they are much safer than they were back when. Outside of jerky, canning is the only way to preserve meat longer term. Freezing only lasts so long. Canned meat lasts at least 5 years or more. Freeze drying meats is the answer. I though it would be like jerky, and would be a good snack, but that isn't true. Freeze dried meat needs to be rehydrated to eat. It is so dry, it will suck all the spit right out of your mouth. A freeze dried steak will rehydrate and be a good edible steak 20 years from now. Of course all freeze dried food has to be packed in air tight containers (mylar bags are best), and oxygen removers (desiccant bags) should be used. Freeze dried fruits are great snack food right out of the bag. They are so good that I have no freeze dried fruits in my preps. The whole family digs into the fruits. I have commercial freeze dried fruits, but all fruits I freeze dried are gone. You can freeze dry almost any food. I dried a bunch of chili and tried some a while back. The beans take a while to rehydrate, but the chili was great. Freeze drying preserves most of the nutrients in the food and outlast dehydrated foods. The Freeze drier is a bit pricey, and can be a pain to use, but the result is incredible. I got mine from Harvest Right, and I believe they are the least expensive to buy. They were first to make a home freeze drier. For your beans, I make a batch up for supper and few left over meals. Everything after that I boil most of the water away, then dehydrate. After bone dry, put in a food processor and power. Add water to rehydrate and you have refried beans. 90% of my beans are pinto - we prefer them to others. I had no idea you could even buy such a thing. This would be great for meats, dairy, eggs that are not really safe to dehydrate!! Thanks for this info. Can't afford squat at this time, the whole plan of the current administration. Hand sanitizer is great for most disinfecting jobs, but you don't want to drink it, it tastes like shit, and it's poison. Vodka solves all those problems. I tend to hurt myself out here every once in a while, and the hospital is a ways from here, stitching is a useful skill. My wife has stitched me up many times, and I stitched her up once. Every prepper should have sutures and the knowledge to stitch wounds. A good selection of antibiotics is good idea also. You can buy fish antibiotics on Ebay. They are the same as human meds, and you don't need a prescription. You will need to find usage and dosing info. Google it, and put the info with your emergency meds. And one thing to remember, for toilet paper include a package of those wrapped Kleenex Pocket Pak tissues, meaning several of those pocket packs. Easy to keep dry and handy. |

What if after you run out of your supplies your life is not over, yet situation is still the same and nowhere to get more supplies? You can prepare with beans, rice, a few spices, pancake mix that only needs water, a few cans of shortening (lasts the longest), salt, sugar. Quoting: WhiteAngel The list goes on but for a bug-out-bag, think about only putting 3 days of food, a change of clothes, extra socks and GOOD walking shoes. Several lighters and or matches in a sealed baggie. I vacuum packed mine. A tarp, a sleeping bag that has been put in one of those space saver bags that you vacuum all the air out to make everything as small as possible. The bag needs to be checked once every 6 months to renew the food, water and any meds you might have in there. You need a good map of your area, usually a recreational map is best and once again, in a sealed baggie along with copies of your DL, birth certificate, car and medical insurance, house info and a few family photos. Oh and money. Real money not plastic. I thought this was a good list. I would add, written paper address book with important phone numbers of family and friends. Take the core of toilet paper out of two rolls, flatten and put in a vacuum baggie. Gives you lots more tissue and flattened with all the air sucked out saves room. Quoting: Lily o' the Valley [link to en.wikipedia.org (secure)] This is not talked about very much. but copper may be an excellent water storage solution. Copper is the best natural antimicrobial, not anti-viral, material out there. BTW. One could place a clean piece of copper in your water storage container for its antimicrobial properties. Not a guarantee but the right idea. It's worth investigating. A hospital here is replacing all work surfaces in labs and door handles with copper/brass because of the anti-microbial properties. I read that water stored overnight in a copper vessel is germ free. That's pretty good, if you aske me. *** Good deeds bring rewards, bad actions bring troubles. That is a law of the universe. *** |
