Some of the best are Berkey Water filters... But be prepared to spend a couple hundred bucks. [link to www.berkeyfilters.com] If your new to water filters REI has a good page you can read that gives some really good info. About types and kinds of filters. [link to www.rei.com] These guys tend to do good reviews so you should be able to find what right for you here. [link to www.outdoorgearlab.com] We only have these so far: [link to www.amazon.com] Two for each person in our family. Next, since we can't afford much at this time, we are going to make our own by doing the below type thing. These packs contain mostly grains and rice. They don't usually put fats in these packs as they don't store as well as grains. As maligned as fats are, you do need a little bit every day to survive. Three gallons of oil or Crisco per year per person. Costco and Sams are great places to get the 5 gallon institutional size. Along with other preps in bulk... These one year packs also require a grinder. I purchased two for redundancy. 100% Natural Unvaxxed Human Being |

You can tell bad oil by an earthy smell when you open the jug. A small glass bowl with an inverted empty cat food can works great. I use wicks made from the strings from a mop. A small hole is poked in the bottom of the cat food can (which is inverted) and a string pulled though it. I did an experiment with a single wick and bowl. A gallon of oil can provide light for over 30 days. Without a lick of electricity! I tried using twelve wicks in one cat food can - which put out enough heat to slowly cook. Beware: don't use it over an hour as the oil in the bowl gets really hot. 100% Natural Unvaxxed Human Being |

(OP) also known at WA User ID: 54218278 United States 09/10/2014 07:48 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Cheap way to have a ceramic water filter. You can run 10-15 gallons of water through it a day and clean it at least 100 times. Try to buy at least two, but 4 would be best, IMHO. To keep from stressing your ceramic filter, let the water you have collected sit for a few hours to let it settle and scoop the top water into another container. Treat this with bleach or sodium hypochlorite and let sit for at least 30 minutes. Smell it. Does it still have a bleach smell? If not, treat with a little more bleach, let sit for 30 more minutes and run through the ceramic filter. Let sit for an hour or two to get rid of the chlorine taste. To speed this up, you can pour water back an forth between two clean containers. This will also add oxygen back into the water, keeping it from tasting flat. [link to www.cheaperthandirt.com] This will show you how to use it: Isaiah 5:20 KJV Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter! Do you think you can store up enough water and food for a month? What will you do if your neighbors come knocking at your door, dying of hunger and thirst? No, you don't need those exactly. You need the FATS. You can just get more peanut butter or whatever you like to replace those. You need a total of 25 lbs of FATS to keep you alive and to cook with. How you supply those fats is up to you. I hope that helps to understand the list more. You are right about calories. If you are sheltering in place you may get by on 1200 - 2000 calories but if you are working hard all day you will need a lot more. Many people are buying the '1 year food supply' from Costco or another source of just add water dehydrated foods. Those are very low calorie / serving. So the buyer will either need to supplement heavily or double or triple the serving sizes for adults. |

There will be times when you can't cook, and do need some of those "just add water" type foods. Personally, I am cooking up a bunch of beans and rice then dehydrating. By doing it now, when water is plentiful, it will save time and water later on. Sealed properly, they will last a long time. Some pre-cook pasta but for me, that just takes up too much room, so I don't do it. For those that didn't know it, the hard dried pasta you buy at the store wasn't cooked before hand. Water needs also increase with more/heavier activities, so plan accordingly. My figure is 3gal/day per person for drinking, cooking (remember dehydrated foods need water for preparation), and personal hygiene.
