Thread: Need carrot advice, harvest time, how to make them last all winter? Depending on how cold it gets in your area you could have left your root crops in the ground all winter with a cold frame over them. Quoting: Sol Neman If they're already out of the ground, carrots should be put in sand, moist but not wet, and stored in a cool dark place. DO NOT wash the carrots before storage. For potatoes they can be kept in a burlap sack, in a cool dark place. Regardless of the vegetable, keep an eye on them throughout winter. If you see any of them start to turn get them out of storage so they don't taint the rest of your crops. If stored properly (cool and dark) they shouldn't grow as they are stored in the dark and no photosynthesis can take place. Since your carrots are sans foliage, they wouldn't grow even if in light. If you cannot maintain a cool, dark place, you'll need to can, freeze or dry. I believe you'll need to pressure can due to low acid content. If you freeze them, dice them up, rinse, while still damp place in your deep freeze (you want them to freeze as fast as possible as that will help avoid rupturing cell walls of the food, making it mushy when thawed) on cookie sheets covered in wax paper. Keep the pieces separate so they don't freeze together. Once frozen, place in freezer bags and put in freezer. By having the pieces moist when you freeze them you will end up with a coating of thin ice on the outside which will help seal the veggie. The same method can be used with meat. The coating of ice adds some additional protection to your food while in the freezer. If you dry, dice into equal sizes, dehydrate for however long you need to, store dried pieces in jars. You may also consider freezing carrots and other veggies such as celery & onion, into ice cubes. You can freeze the veggies together or separate from each other. Fill ice cube tray with veggies, top off with water. Freeze and either leave in ice tray or place cubes in a freezer bag. By using this method, the next time you make soup or something you can just toss the proper amount of ice cubes into your mix to get your need veggies. Keep in mind the additional water that will be added when you do this. The ice cube will help avoid damage due to freezer burn. Have no idea really, never tried to transplant veggies. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 15612339 They should grow if you can give them the right conditions to grow. Right amount of light per day, food, and water. what kind of light should I use? This is a difficult question to answer. The light spectrum needed by the plant varies throughout the growing season. When a plant first starts growing it needs a cooler/bluer color spectrum. You can achieve this with metal halide (expensive and hot) or a fluorescent light set up using 'cooler bulbs.' If going the fluorescent route, go to a pet store that sells aquarium supplies. Look for full spectrum lighting or bulbs that are cooler. When the plant begins to bloom later in the season more of a red hue is needed. This can be achieved by using high pressure sodium lights or fluorescent bulbs that are warmer, which again can be found at an aquarium shop. Fluorescent lights will need to be almost touching the plant to achieve the desired effect of replicating the sun. Your MH or HPS can be farther away from the plants and must be otherwise you'll burn the plants. As far as how long you should keep the lights on in a given day depends on the plant and where in the growing season you are trying to replicate. There's a whole lot more to it than simply providing light but for the sake of brevity I'll stop here and leave the rest of the research to you. If you are planning to survive widespread disasters then you must be prepared for power outages, and that means making sure your stored water doesn't freeze. |

Start with getting 1 month for family, then 2 and keep going till you have 6 months of basic rice, bean, salt, pepper, sugar and coffee and tea. It is a boring diet but will keep you and your loved ones alive. Cheap too. Once you have those basics add to it, especially spices to keep it interesting. Canned meats. You will be surprised how quickly you can get to six months when only buying basics. Don't let pepper sites scare you either. Soda bottles work just fine to store rice, beans, sugar, salt, corn meal and other things. edit; soda bottles for 1-2 years only for anything other than salt, sugar, and baking soda. I store flour types in a lunch sack, about 8-9 cups, and then vacuum seal, will last 10 years if kept under 70 degrees, dark and low humidity. I rotate every 5 years. After you have 6 months and have add a few more things to keep it interesting, strive for one year, then two. We had to hit our storage when we had some bad times but then that is what it is there for. We are working on 6 months again. We added lots more spaghitti and noodles. Found that works for us. Added sauce and soups. Pancake mix that only needs water will also make biscuits. Cheap cheap. Appitite fatigue is a major deal. You MUST add variety even if only with a few spices. People will starve before eating the same thing for the 30th day in a row. Fresh veggies for vitamins? Sprout the beans. Seriously, it will work. One month at a time of only basics. You can do this. I did on a shoestring budget!!!! We have a metal roof, so I don't need to worry about that, but its a great idea for folks with roofs like yours. I think a person could also dig a ditch, line it with a tarp and collect a pool of rain water that way too if they can't get up on the roof to lay the tarps. |
