Being Prepared - Updated Basic Food List On Page One
Are you prepared to live off what you have in your own home without any outside aid for a week, two weeks, a month or even a year? This could be bad weather, an earthquake, economic collapse, pandemic, the list goes on. If you are not, then you will die. You must take responsibility for yourself, your family or group. Preparing is hard and costs too much are what I hear over and over. It can be mind boggling when you first start but there are ways to get started that don’t have to cost a lot and will keep you alive.

I have read many times that first you buy 3 months of food that you normally eat, then you start working on long term storage items (LTS), I don’t agree, not with the state things are at this time. Too many of us are just barely making it and we need food now to stock up.

Before you buy one thing extra, you need water. One gallon of water per person per day is the standard theory. If you are doing nothing but hiding, a half gallon will work. If you are doing hard work and it is hot outside, you will need more than one gallon. 30 days of water is 30 gallons minimum. The cheapest way to store water is save or have friends save for you if you don’t drink it, 2-liter soda bottles. I rinse them out, add a little dish soap, a little bleach, and a little water. I shake well and pour it into the next bottle using a funnel. I do about 20-30 bottles at a time. The lids I put into a bowl with bleach water and let them soak while I am cleaning the bottles. In this same bowl I dip the top of the bottle, so that the groves are also cleaned. After all bottles are cleaned, they are sitting on my counter for about 30 mins to let the bleach continue disinfecting. After this, I rinse the bottles well. Usually 3-4 times. Then fill with water and add 2 drops of regular household bleach that does not have any scents or is splash proof. I use a bamboo skewer, dip it into the bleach bottle and let drip two drops into the 2-liter bottles. Put the rinsed and cleaned lid on, dry and area off and write what date the bottle was filled and that it came from tap water.

Again many say this water should be rotated every 6 months. I don’t know about you but I sure don’t have time for that. I have since read, water is always water. The only think you would need to worry about it after 2-3 years the plastic the bottle is made from “might” break down. There is no proof of this happening. If you find it, please let me know. Another thing, old water will taste stale. This is because there isn’t any oxygen in it. To get rid of this taste, simply pour the water back and forth between two CLEAN containers a few times. This will put oxygen back into the water and the taste will improve.

Don’t forget to save water for cleaning with. Hygiene is very important, especially in a crisis.

Never store water for drinking nor hygiene in an used milk carton. Never. It doesn’t matter how well you clean that bottle, the bacteria will become one with the plastic – a point that one might consider when storing your water in the 2-liter bottles, make sure it was soda or water. Many use juice bottles also.

Household bleach only has a shelf life of 6 months to 2 years depending on how old it was when you bought it. Pool shock or Dry High Test Hypochlorite (HTH) has no shelf life, and its cheap – a one pound bag (that will purify about 10,000 gallons of water) is about $5.00. Below is a good link and video for using. Remember, once opened it needs to be kept in a plastic or glass container as it is corrosive to metal.

Bleach will destroy most (but NOT all!) disease causing organisms (boiling water to make it safe to drink is always the best method). It is best to combine the two.

This is the stuff I have on hand.
[link to www.amazon.com]

You don’t want any fungacides in the pool shock, just Calcium Hypochlorite 68% or better.

Using granular calcium hypochlorite to disinfect water is a two step process.

* To make a stock of chlorine solution (do not drink this!) dissolve 1 heaping teaspoon (about one-quarter of an ounce) of high-test (78%) granular calcium hypochlorite for each two gallons (eight liters) of water.
* To disinfect water add one part of the chlorine solution to 100 parts water to be treated.
* Let the mixture sit for at least one-half hour before drinking.

To use household bleach for disinfecting water:

* Add two drops of bleach per quart or liter of water.
* Stir it well.
* Let the mixture stand for a half hour before drinking.

If the water is cloudy with suspended particles:

* First filter the water as best you can.
* Double the amount of bleach you add to the water.
* Let sit for 30 minutes. If it doesn't have a bleach smell, shake water and repeat with bleach waiting 30 minutes between each treatment until you can smell a mild scent of bleach after 30 minutes. If it takes more than 3-4 treatments, DO NOT DRINK THIS WATER!!!!!

Another plus for using calcium hypochlorite to disinfect water for emergency use is that a little goes a very long way. A 1-pound bag of calcium hypochlorite in granular form typically costs only a few US dollars and can be obtained in any swimming pool supply section of your hardware store or online. This amount will treat up to 10,000 gallons of drinking water, which is enough for a family of four for some six or seven years at a gallon per day per person!

Re: Being Prepared - Updated Basic Food List On Page One
Here is a basic supply list for one person for one year. It is the totals you are working towards. Example, maybe you don’t like corn meal so you add more to rice and pasta. Canned spaghetti sauce would be part of your vegetables. This is a guide only.

One thing many people do is go out and buy 300 pounds of grains but they can't afford to get anything else until next pay day. A better way would be to do this would be to pick up 25 pounds of rice, 25 pounds of beans, 25 pounds of sugar, etc.

When I started, I divided everything by 4, so that I was stocking up for 3 months, then 6 months, then 9 months and finally for a year. Since I have a family of 4, the numbers below are what I worked with for each 3 months

GRAINS
150 lbs of Wheat
25 lbs of Flour
25 lbs of Corn Meal
25 lbs of Oats
50 lbs of Rice
25 lbs of Pasta

300 lbs total of Grains

LEGUMES
30 lbs of Dry Beans
5 lbs of Lima Beans
10 lbs of Soy Beans
5 lbs of Split Peas
5 lbs of Lentils
5 lbs of Dry Soup Mix

60 lbs Total of Legumes

FATS & OILS
4 lbs Shortening
2 gals Vegetable Oil
2 qts Mayonnaise
1 qrt Salad Dressing
4 lbs of Peanut Butter

25 lbs Total of Fats & Oils

MILK & DAIRY
60 lbs of Dry Milk
12 cans of Evaporated Milk
13 lbs of Other Dairy

75 lbs Total of Milk & Dairy

SUGARS
3 lbs of Honey
40 lbs of Sugar
3 lbs of Brown Sugar
1 lb of Molasses
3 lbs of Corn Syrup
3 lbs of Jams & Jelly
6 lbs of Powdered Fruit Drink
1 lb of Flavored Gelatin (Jello)

60lbs Total of Sugars

COOKING ESSENTIALS
1 lb of Baking Powder (I don't store for LTS as it doesn't have a long shelf life, 6 months to 18 months only.)

1 lb of Baking Soda (this needs more also for cleaning, brushing teeth, as a deodorant, lots of uses)
0.5 lbs of Yeast
5 lbs of Salt (You need iodized and plain or canning salt for canning and preserving meats - so plan on more - 20lbs)

0.5 lbs of Vinegar (I think this needs increased to 1-2 gallons per person for canning and cleaning. You also need several gallons of apple cider vinegar - like Braggs which is unprocessed and has what they call the mother. You will use this to make elixirs for flu and colds)

Black pepper (whole lasts indefinitely, just remember a pepper grinder)
Onion/Garlic Powder
Chili Powder
Vanilla extract
Cream of Tartar
Corn Starch

To make 1 tablespoon of baking powder:
2 teaspoon of cream of tarter (shelf life = indefinite)
1 teaspoon of baking soda (shelf life = indefinite)

Use within two weeks. Only make up what you need at a time. If you are going to store for 2 weeks, add one teaspoon of cornstarch to keep it from clumping.

FRUITS
40 lbs of Apples (canned or dried)
40 lbs of Applesauce
30 lbs of Banana Chips
35 lbs of Fruit Mixture
40 lbs of Fruit Juice

185 lbs Total of Fruits

VEGETABLES
30 lbs of Corn
30 lbs of Peas
30 lbs of Green Beans
30 lbs of Carrots
40 lbs of Potatoes
20 lbs of Tomatoes

185 lbs Total of Vegetables

Though the LDS say nothing about canned meats, I have added them to my preps. Add Alaska salmon - it has one of the longest shelf life of meat next to tuna and Spam. Tuna, well it might be contaminated. Spam, learn to like it along with Vienna Sausage. Also add canned chicken and beef if you can find it. Canned ham also lasts a long time, I just can't find it.

WATER
30 gals of Water (one month supply, more if you have room. This is only for drinking and cooking)
1 gal of bleach (shelf life is only 6 months to one year)
1-pound bag of calcium hypochlorite would work better than liquid bleach for long term storage.
-------------------------

Remember there won't be any running to the store when you need comfort food. We all snack (I call it grazing for my family) which adds up more than we think it does. Some chips here, some candy there, some ice cream, or whatever it is that makes you feel better when you are stressed or sad. Those are the things you have to stock up on also. If they are missing, it will just add to the stress of the whole situation!

Re: Being Prepared - Updated Basic Food List On Page One
Below is a blog I have been keeping, some over a year ago, but thought it offered a lot of info for many.
----------------------

My Prepping Experience In The Burbs

Woke up today with the need to check my "lists" and check them twice, lol. You know that feeling you get when you forgot something and you just HAVE to go back and make sure you really turned off the stove, curling iron? That is how I felt. So I checked, hate how small it is and decided I need to do better. I can stretch my preps a year if we only get 2000 calories a day. Yeah right. We will all be working our butts off trying to survive and the last thing we will need is food rations. 4000-5000 calories a day is what each and everyone of you should be prepping for each person in your group. Don't half that number for children, the silly things grow like weeds. Double that number if you have teen boys or soon to be teen boys.

Many prep for 6 months to a year. When you think about it, if you are truly prepping for a SHTF that is indeed TEOTWAWKI then you should be prepping for 2-5 years. Many of you just spit whatever you are drinking out your nose and then thought this chicky is nutsy. Really? Let's think about it for a moment using the world economy as just one of the many SHTF scenarios we are all facing right now. What if it happened in the middle of the summer, too late to plant a garden for most things, which means you won't get a full harvest until the following fall. That is a year and a half of living on your preps only. What if that was the year that all crops failed no matter what you did? That means two and a half years living on your preps. Now you get the point.

Tomorrow morning the world economy just hit rock bottom. Boom it finally happened. Money is now useless and though the thought to use it to wipe your hiney is gonna cross your mind, don't. Think of all the creepy germs that is on it, and just use it as a fire starter instead. Remember, hospitals and doctor's offices will be raided and over ran in the coming weeks. You can't afford to get sick. The first thing you are going to do, it head to the store and buy everything you can with the money you have and the credit cards you have on hand. If you are lucky, it will still be good and you can buy a bunch of stuff and safely get it home. If you are not lucky, prices have tripled, credit cards are useless and the store is a riot zone. You will head home without anything in hand. How much food

How could rioting happen that quickly? Just think about it. Anyone who has half a brain will be thinking just like you and know they need to stock up right now or there won't be a chance later. By the end of the first day the shelves at the store will be empty. I could be wrong, it could take 3 days, but I don't think so. Some of the clueless might be sitting around laughing at the rioting at the store until they head to their fridge and realize they are out of milk. The average American, keeps only 3 days of food in their house, (I think they keep a week or two worth). When I learned that, I honestly thought it was an exaggeration, as I only do major shopping once a month with a few other trips for perishables, so even before I was "awake" I had at least two months of supplies on hand. Who keeps 3 days of food in their house, for crying out loud? College students, poor people, those living on welfare and older people who live on retirement checks, single guys with a fridge full of beer and some junk food, your neighbors who think shopping daily for their meals is cool.

Just in case it takes 3 days, day 4 will be hell. Rioting with law enforcement over run, hospitals in chaos and Martial Law declared. People aren't going to work. Why bother if you aren't going to get paid. How long will the electricity last? How long will heating last? How long can you get gas for your vehicle? How long will that magical faucet turn on and have life giving water pour out? How long before gangs are busting down your door to take your food, your children? How long? A week? Two maybe even three? Your food is gone in say two weeks. Water and electricity stop in 3 weeks.

Yup, very depressing. So, how long will it last? When do things get back to normal? There are a bunch of people on this board and out in the world that don't believe it ever will. It's called a reset. Life as you know it ended and a few billion people could die before it all settles down again. Yes this is a worse case scenario and that is what you should be prepping for. Hell on earth. Experts state the 90% of the USA will die. Plan to be one of the 10%.

You can't grow food during the first year of hell unless you are in a very isolated area and are positive roving gangs will not find you. Just think of all those valuable seeds going to waste if you are ran off your isolated spot. Your job during that first year is to NOT be seen, NOT be heard and NOT be smelled. Smell? What? Starving people will be able to smell food cooking over a fire/grill from a long long ways off, depending on the direction of the wind, up to a mile away. Just think how far your neighbor's BBQ carries. Your mouth on a full belly waters and you want to start up your own grill!!

Now is the time to get prepared. Right now. Not tomorrow. The world economy REALLY is on the verge of collapse. There really are wicked viruses out that that could cause a pandemic and no, I am not going to go on and on about all the many horrible ways the world was we know it could cease to exist over night. My point is to get you moving to make sure you can survive or at least give you a better chance. Survival will be a matter of luck (even for those on their wilderness/isolated land) and by the grace of God. Yup, you best get yourself ready mentally, physically, emotionally, financially and spiritually. All of this is going to help you and yours survive.

You need to prep for 2-5 years. Those long term preps will last for a very long time. I am going to try to help you prep as cheaply as possible and mainly will be talking about things that are not related to weapons and ammo, as I will leave that to others who have more knowledge. A .22 rifle and 1,000 rounds of ammo will cost you under $250 at Wally World, it is lighter weight than most and reliable. That is all I will say about guns and ammo.

During the depression, many lived on beans and cornbread (my family did) with little meat. Beans are high in vitamins and protein. Cornbread is filling. I know, I know, corn isn't all that safe in many ways due to the GMO crap, but as for a cheap prep and survival potential, it will be life saving. Cornmeal as well as other ground grains will last 5 years (If put in Mylar with an oxygen absorber 10 years). I keep mine in 2-liter soda bottles and a little in Mylar for long term storage (LTS). I am working for cheap here.

One of the best places to get whole dried corn is a feed supply store. Call ahead and make sure to ask for whole corn, not cracked corn. They are gonna know it any way, let them know it will be for human consumption. Around my area, 50 pounds for $13. You will need a hand grain grinder.
****************************

Here is a good site: givemetheinfo.com/prepping-food-storage/ You want to read this site and then print it out. In my searches I found the plan below. Simple, relatively inexpensive. I received permission from the author to share this.

You can buy a year worth of food for less than $200 (2012 prices)

The whole plan is as simple as;

200 lbs of pinto beans (per person)
300 lbs of yellow whole kernel corn (per person)
35 lbs of liquid shortening (per person). I now only use lard and bacon grease. Shortening is just poison. What I have will be used for light, burns longer than candles.

And that’s it. This will supply almost 2000 calories per day for 365 days. You may notice there’s no freeze dried caviar on the list.
But if you don’t die of epicurean boredom you will survive until the end of the year.

And it’s a very good diet too. Both traditionally and scientifically.
The Native Americans grew beans, corn and squash, They called them The
Three Sisters. They thrived on the diet. The squash was a good addition.
Scientifically, a beans and corn diet give a complete array of all the
amino acids your body needs to live. They call it a complete protein.
You can get a little more information here on complete proteins.

www.fitsugar.com/Whats-Complete-P...now-165298
***********************
Beans, no matter how well you stored them, get hard as a rock over time. Yup, they are still good, but hard. A trick to help with this is adding 2 teaspoons of baking soda. I have tried this with pinto beans and yes it did seem to soften them, but I didn't notice a shorter cooking time. The other thing, the water turned dark purple each time I tried this. Gave up. If anyone has a better idea, please let me know. I only store pinto beans, as I grew up in the Southwest and to me it is the only REAL bean there is. They have one of the highest protein contents. There are two more but I don't remember which, you will need to research the kinds of beans you like and prep those. You can't cook those beans over a stove all day, so what do you do? You soak them overnight in water, in the morning (currently I dump this water as it helps to remove the reason beans give GAS - after a SHTF you won't be doing this), you heat the beans to a boil, then as you are conserving on fires, you remove from the fire and put in a warmer with a tight lid. This can be done by wrapping the pot in a blanket and putting into a bale of hay. The idea is the beans keep cooking all day and by night time they are ready for supper. I think the above link has more info on this.

Lard and solid shortening lasts longer than liquid oils, so I don't agree with the above on this. I prep veggie shortening like Crisco. Their site states it lasts 2 years - I know it is fine for 5 and that is opened. (Since I first wrote this, have learned that Crisco changed their formula. It still lasts for 2-5 years but seems to turn faster now. I buy the generic store brand shortening for two reasons. It still is the old formula and because I make large cakes, this is better for making fluffy white frosting. Crisco's changed formula doesn't make nice buttercream anymore.) Here is a link to their site: www.crisco.com/about_crisco/faqs.aspx

Lard lasts a long time. There isn't an exp. date on the containers for a reason. Here is an interesting link: digitaljournal.com/article/318957

Re: Being Prepared - Updated Basic Food List On Page One
I do have some things in Mylar with O2 absorbers. I went to the local LDS warehouse and they have 1 gal bags for cheaper than any place on the web. If you can get to one of their warehouses, even if it is a drive, do so, they are sweet and very helpful. You do not need to be a member to shop. Call a head as some places are now requiring a member to go with you. Not that way in Denver or Albuquerque but I don't know first hand about any place else. Their LTS (long term storage) is some of the cheapest you can find.

Mylar is expensive (especially if you don't have an LDS warehouse nearby)and getting all the 5 gallon buckets is hard and if you can't find the freebies at the grocery store as someone else always beats you to it (yup, I am talking to you, hee hee) so what's a girl suppose to do? 2 liter soda bottles, a bit of dry ice and you are set. Personally, I don't even mess with the dry ice. The stuff I put in the bottles I only need to last about 5-8 years as I rotate through these. I also now use a vacuum sealer for bags and canning jars. Using a FoodSaver attachment to a canning jar lets you seal the dried foods in the jar to last a very long time. If anyone is interested in this info, let me know and I will post more info.

For a while now I have been saving all the 2 liter soda bottles, Gatorade and other bottles like this, and water bottles no matter how small. I don't save milk jugs, as you can't get the bacteria out, even soaking in bleach, so I don't bother even for gray water (to use for washing or watering plants). First I rinse the bottles, then put a few drops of dish soap and a bit of bleach and then half water, shake well, tipping slightly to make sure the mouth and threads are cleaned also, I do this by turning the bottle upside down in my cupped hand so that the
threads are covered in soapy bleach.

Then using a funnel, I pour this into the next bottle and repeat till all are done (I do this after I have several bottles saved up), then let them sit for 15-30 minutes while I clean or read. Don't forget the lids, I put these in a pot or bowl and pour the last of the soapy bleach water in. Next is rinse well. If I am planning to fill with water, I fill the bottle half way, put in 2 drops of regular household bleach (no scented or splashless kinds) for 2 liter bottles and 1 drop for smaller bottles. Shake it a little, then fill, put the rinsed lid on and tighten. Give the bottle another shake and store in a dark cool place. Rotate this water every two years, some say less, but in a cool dark area, it helps the water last longer. After all, water is water. This water will taste stale and will need to be shook to incorporate air back into it. If you can, do try to rotate it yearly but with 50 to 100 bottles filled we all know that isn't going be easy to do.

If you are going to use the bottles for storing dry foods, let them dry thoroughly for about 3-4 days depending how humid it is in your area. Once they are completely dry, fill with things like, sugar, cornmeal, flour, salt, oatmeal, rice, beans, baking soda, corn starch and some cereals. Most of the things listed above have indefinite shelf life, meaning they pretty much last forever. Cereal and flour are the exceptions, 3 - 5 years, though in my opinion, flour will be fine for 10 years.

Baking powder is not listed as it starts to go bad by year or two and I notice a difference after even a year. Have you ever made something with baking powder that was very bitter and wondered why? Yup, the baking powder! Took me forever to wonder why my cornbread, biscuits and Thanksgiving stuffing were bitter - what was I doing wrong. I started using less and less baking powder never making the connection until I read it on a survival blog!
No worries, you can make your own with two ingredients that last forever. Baking soda and cream of tartar.

1 teaspoon baking soda
2 teaspoons cream of tartar
1 teaspoon corn starch (optional)
Corn starch is used to absorb the moisture in the air for storage, which keeps the baking powder from reacting making it useless. Store in an air tight container (I just keep my old baking powder containers). You won't need it if you only make what you need at the time.

Most commercially produced baking powder contains aluminum--sodium aluminum sulfate to be exact. Make your own baking powder, and keep your baked goods aluminum-free.

So far I haven't found a local source of cream of tartar that isn't in the little tins at the grocery store. So I just buy 1 or 2 when I can at the store.

Something else I would like to point to before anything else. PRINT your how-to's. PRINT your recipes. PRINT every single thing you would slap yourself in the forehead for not doing if the power goes out. If you have a backup power source for a small computer, tablet or something else, copy EVERYTHING to a USP drive. My hubby is a computer nerd so he can help me out with this.

There have been many rumors recently of the internet being taken down. All that wonderful info out there and on this forum will be lost forever if you don't print it out. Get yourself a 3" 3-ringed binder. Yup that is thick but if your survival depends on what is in that binder, it will and should be thick. Actually, you will need more than that if you are copying everything you need.

Now, get yourself some clear report protectors, pocket type that you can slip two pages in, to protect them. You will want to do this for those pages that are recipes or other things you will be using a lot. Many people do it for everything, if you do, just know you will add more bulk. Make copies of your important documents, driver's license, birth certificate, social security number, mortgage paper work and anything else you need. Laminate it. Put it in your binder. Put your binder in a plastic bag, seal with tape and then put in another bag and tape. You want this to STAY dry even if you go swimming through a river or are drenched in non-stop rain. The binder(s) should be in your BOB.

If you are making USP drives, make two and give the extra set to another responsible person. Seal them in a baggie and then put in another baggie for extra protection. I am not sure if an EMP can harm the USB drives, but to be safe, take a small Mylar pouch, slip your USP drive inside a sock or small cloth and wrap a few times, then put inside the pouch - you don't want the USB to touch the Mylar, fold the edge down twice and seal with tape so you can update often or add more if needed. Water proof and EMP proof.

Once you have your item inside, you need to seal the seam. The best thing I have found to seal Mylar is a hair straightening iron. Just slide it over the edge and make sure you get wrinkles out. I usually went over it twice just to make sure.

More water info:

Water is so hard to store and needs so much room, but all the food you store means nothing if you can't have water. Here is my plan, not great but it is what I can do. I have been saving 2-liter soda bottles for a year from our family and friends and have over 100 that are not being used at this point.

Clean them like mentioned above, except you don't need to let them dry out. Fill them with water and put in a drop of bleach, seal and label with the date you filled. Because there is a worry about the plastics, even so called safe ones leaching harmful chemicals into the water, many only store their water for 6 months. I have done enough research that I will store ours for a year or two.

If you do not have a dropper for putting ONE drop of water, you can do what I do. I put a little bleach in a 1/4 cup and dip a thin wooden dowel or skewer in and let it drop one drop into the bottle.

Stored water goes flat and doesn't taste good. When you first open a container of water that has been stored for a year or so, pour it back and forth between two containers to add air back into it. This improves the taste big time!

3.79 liters = 1 gallon, so you have a bit more than a gallon with two 2-liter bottles of water. 50 gallons of water means 100 bottles of 2-liter size, tons of room needed. You can lay they on their sides and stack up.

Note: the bleach needs to be regular house hold bleach with no scents
added and not the splash-less kind either. Just plain old fashion
bleach.

=========================================

The next thing I have planned for water is rain catching from my roof. My roof is asphalt and dangerous to collect water off from all the chemicals it will leach so I bought several rolls of plastic drop cloth from Home Depot. It is cheap and you will always need some for something, so make sure you have several extra rolls. I plan to cover my roof before a storm comes in, and make sure the gutters are still cleaned out.

Barrels will be on both ends of the house to collect the water. Take off the bottom end of the down spout and adjust so it goes straight into the barrels. You will want to let the first bunch of rain flow out, just to make sure you are getting clean water.

The web is full of ideas on how to do this, here is one: www.wikihow.com/Build-a-Rainwater...ion-System

If you have acid rain, you can make a two or three part filtration system, letting each barrel trickle down thru sand. Again there are many web sites about this and I will let you do a little research there.

It would be smart if you live in an area that doesn't have natural sand in your soil, to get several bags of "play-sand" so that you can filter your water when shtf.

FYI, the above site is out of stock as were two other sites I went to.

I have seen them at only $17 so they are cheaper than the one above but ti gives you an idea what I am talking about. 65+ (most will hold 100 gallons or more) gallons of clean drinking water is priceless!!!

Living in the burbs means you aren't in the intercity but you aren't rural either. Can't have animals but you can have a garden. Square foot gardening in raised beds will produce more than just on flat ground. If you don't have a garden yet, now is time to start preparing for next spring. So many people think you can just go buy a package of seeds, take it home, dig up the ground a little, rake it and plant your seeds, give it a good dose of water and in a few months FOOD.

Wrong!! Most full time gardeners know it takes 2-3 years to have a good garden because it takes that long just to learn what the heck you are doing, and to make your dirt SOIL. I make a joke that I am older than soil and younger than dirt - not all get it. You need to learn the difference if you are hoping to keep your family alive on what you grow. So you made raised beds and you filled it with perfect Miracle Garden soil (spent a bloody fortune doing that too) so you think it is all good. The bag states it will feed your garden around 3 months, then what? You have to have a good compost pile/bin/bag going at all times. Always. When there isn't any more fertilizer it is the compost pile that will keep your soil happy and healthy and allow you to grow tons of fresh food for your loved ones.

Re: Being Prepared - Updated Basic Food List On Page One
Remember to keep an inventory of what you have on hand. Things can get away from you quickly and then you are lost. At one point we were at 1 year (or about) counting the LTS items. Now we are back down to less than 6 mos, maybe 3-4. And there is the reason for the inventory, I just don't know how much I have anymore.

How do you ever know if what you have will even last a year? No, this is a serious question. You look at one sight and they will tell you you need so many pounds of grains, so many pounds of beans, so many pounds of sugar, salt, pepper, etc for each person for a year. Then you look at another site and they say "double that amount, as you will be burning 5000 calories in a PAW". So how do you know how much to have??

My goal is 3 1/3 years worth and for most Bible readers you will automatically know what that is, the tribulation period. Some say a Christian shouldn't worry about food storage or prepping in general as the Bible tells you to let God take care of everything. Then why the following:

Genesis 6:21-22 (KJV)
And take thou unto thee of all food that is eaten, and thou shalt gather it to thee; and it shall be for food for
thee, and for them. Thus did Noah; according to all that God commanded him, so did he.

Genesis 41:1-32
This is the story of Joseph and the 7 year of plenty and then 7 years of famine. Joseph stocked up so there would be plenty in the time of need.

Proverbs 6:6-11 (KJV)
6 Go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise:
7 Which having no guide, overseer, or ruler,
8 Provideth her meat in the summer, and gathereth her food in the harvest.
9 How long wilt thou sleep, O sluggard? when wilt thou arise out of thy sleep?
10 Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep:
11 So shall thy poverty come as one that travelleth, and thy want as an armed man.

Or for those who have trouble understanding KJV

Proverbs 6:6-11 - New Living Translation (NLT)
6 Take a lesson from the ants, you lazybones. Learn from their ways and become wise!
7 Though they have no prince or governor or ruler to make them work,
8 they labor hard all summer, gathering food for the winter.
9 But you, lazybones, how long will you sleep? When will you wake up?
10 A little extra sleep, a little more slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest—
11 then poverty will pounce on you like a bandit; scarcity will attack you like an armed robber.

The above describes the sheeple perfectly!!

1 Timothy 5:8 (KJV)
8 But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel.

So yes, we should be prepping and we should be preparing for the times of trouble that are coming.

I didn't know how much we had been dipping into my preps until I went to get another package of toilet paper and found it was the last one...oops! Talk about not keeping up with my inventory. Spam was down to 12 cans - when it had been at 27. What the heck? Looks like I am going to have to hang a clipboard!

The idea is to print up EVERYTHING you have in your inventory that you have to rotate and constantly restock. Then you put them in plastic slip covers, the kind you use for high school/college papers. You keep either a grease pen or a dry erase pen on a string also attached to the clipboard so you never lose it. Each time something is removed, you check mark it or put 1, 2 or however many you used.

This way, you always know how much stuff you have removed from stock. When you add more than what is on the original sheet, you cross off and ADD the new amount but you never subtract. The idea is to always keep the most in your preps are possible.

I am hoping this will help me keep track and hopefully it will help you also. Remember to also rotate your food. A good time is on the first of each month, or the 1st Sat of each month, or whatever day will work for you, as long as you remember the golden rule of food storage:
First In - - - First Out

****************************
Keep running out of spaghetti pasta also. I have LTS of spaghetti and macaroni that I won't touch but everything else, we have been burning through it as it is easy to stretch meals with rice and pasta!

I need to use my pinto beans more. Our bodies need to get accustom to living on beans. To make a pot at the beginning of the week, at the end of the week, use some of it to mash almost smooth and add it to meat loaf to extend it so not as much real meat is needed. The rest, cook down to get rid of most of the liquid, mash for re-fried beans. If we can't use it, dehydrate on the sheets in the dehydrator. This will turn it into a lumpy powder. Can it like one would can flour in the oven. It is much easier to rehydrate than whole dried beans.

Since I first made this post, many things have been learned and changed.

Soda/juice bottles are only good for sugar, salt and baking soda.

The beans and rice I stored in them, didn't stand up well. Vacuum sealing all works much better and lasts longer without losing flavor or color. Beans in the bottles took twice as long to cook. I have an Instant Pot that I add 10 minutes to pressure for old beans and it works well.

Those old beans still sprout!!

Re: Being Prepared - Updated Basic Food List On Page One
Knowing that everyone's needs are different, I would still like to make a basic list of things people need to HAVE on hand. To this basic list, each can then add to it how they want for their needs. We all know we need food, water, guns, ammo, warm clothing, etc but I would like everyone to think about this long and hard.

What do we have to have? Basic things to survive no matter what happens; economic collapse, CME/EMP, pole shift, or just whatever! This basic list will work for it all. You work to get 3 month worth, then you push to 6 months. For LTS you want to have 1 year of this. It last 30+ years and you don't have to worry about rotation, except when you add to it.

Basic Stay At Home Supplies:

Water

Food

Gun(s)/ammo

3 months worth - Multi Vitamin, basic OTC meds/herbs, Prescription meds

1st Aid Kit - this should be a big kit and not one of those that goes into a car.

Sewing supplies

Toilet paper - enough for each person for 3 months

A tent to set up in your home in case the power is out and it is cold. Body heat will keep you warm.

Candles, lanterns, flashlights and tons of batteries. Solar powered yard stakes, the kind you buy to decorate your yard or to light a pathway. These would be great to provide light. Set them out in the day time and use during the night!

If cold weather, a way to enclose one room to keep all the heat in there. Remember to have one small area to vent so carbon monoxide doesn't build up.

Feminine hygiene items. Make some washable pads (old towels and wash cloths are very absorbent) to use over and over. Our girls are not use to this, so keep a diaper pail and bleach water to help them out.

Baby needs if you have small ones. Cloth diapers and plastic pants. Same thing, get a nice diaper pail and remember bleach water.

A way to cook food without power

Soap - laundry and hands

Basic hygiene - deodorant, shampoo, conditioner, razor, shaving cream, lotion, toothbrush and paste, etc. Stuff you use everyday but 3 months worth.
Extra glasses, contacts, sunglasses, eye wash

This is in two sections. One is for staying home and one is for getting out of dodge when you have no other choice. As a family we are not going anywhere. We don't have a location to go except for one and at that location, there really isn't room for us. We will go there if we have to but that means leaving so much behind. Everyone want to stay in their own home. It doesn't always work out that way. Murphy has a way for popping up, or as Mongoose and I say, the luck of the Irish happens!!

Get out of Dodge basic supplies:

10 gallons of gasoline (more if you have a way to store it safely)

BOB (bug out bag for each person)

Atlas for your Country

Maps for your area and surrounding states. These should be recreational or topographical maps so you know how to navigate the back roads and back country. You are bugging out, you sure don't want to be seen or using major roadways.

Water - very heavy, you need to know how to find more and make it safe!

Food - food is heavy so you want to go with MRE's and dehydrated good.

Weapons/ammo

Basic camping gear

Sleeping bags for each person

Lots of lighters, waterproof matches, steal fire starter.

Compass

Ways to purify water.

Small folding shovel
Good strong knife

Steel wire - many uses
Duct tape

1st Aid kit
Sewing kit

Kids need their special toys. Don't forget this or it will make it more traumatic for the little ones.

You may have to hoof it, so a collapsible wagon with those large balloon tires would be smart and allows you to carry more, or those kiddos who just can't keep up. To me this is basic, others might not agree.
