DDOS only serves to knock a website offline by overloading it? Is there some other benefit (i.e. financial)?

I kinda wonder if that site is legit. How do they get their hands on that info? They would have to be tapped into backbones and have some pretty sophisticated algorithms to detect stuff like that in real time.

And how would can they distinguish between a DDOS attack and legitimate traffic without analyzing what's in the data?
