Comet ISON's last gasp ** Ghostly noctilucent clouds ** Stunning video -Tunguska link
I am sure you all remember GLP's favourite comet from last year. Well its ghost is back to haunt us, maybe.

The closest comet ISON came to Earth's orbit was around 2.3 million miles on October the 15th. That denied us the chance of another annual meteor shower but it did perhaps leave another legacy according to at least one specialist.

Dr Paul Weigert of the University of Western Ontario believed that extremely fine grained dust from ISON could be blown by the solar wind onto Earth's upper atmosphere. The particle size is so small that they were immediately slowed by the Earth's atmosphere and could not form meteors. Over the following month's and years the particles will slowly settle onto the surface of the planet. Heavier particles would be proportionately less influenced by solar wind and so would come nowhere near the Earth. That's why we did not get an ISON meteor shower.

While the particles are in the high atmosphere they can form nucleation points for clouds. During the summer months, in the high latitudes between 50 and 70 degrees North, there is the chance of seeing ghostly noctilucent clouds, which are thought to form around such comet dust particles.

If you look in a northerly direction within a couple of hours of sunset or Sunrise you may catch a glimpse of these ethereal blue/white glowing veil clouds. There have been a number of recent reports from the UK and Holland, and they are quite a regular sight from Canada too.

these happen every summer in particular.. they are not related to the dead ISON
 Quoting: Abinadi

Depending on where you are you may or may not occasionally see noctilucent clouds. In the UK and Holland we have recently had a particularly good display, I know from experience that we rarely see them from Southern England.

I don't know how you can say with such certainty that they are not related to C/2012 S1 ISON, I would imagine all active Earth crossing comets contribute to mesopheric dust and therefore noctilucent clouds.

Here are some of the pictures from the UK.

Sometimes the BBC blocks country access, tell me if you can't see this.

This is a superb video, watch it fullscreen in HD if you can. It was filmed last year in Caithness, in the far North of Scotland, a more usual latitude to see noctilucent clouds ( NLC )from.

Here is the original article that outlines Wiegert's ideas about the NLCs.

Noctilucent clouds may hold the answer to the hundred year old mystery of the Tunguska event.

It has been noticed that following various missile and shuttle launches noctilucent clouds can for in the Arctic region. The idea is that the NLCs form at high altitude on the water vapour from the rocket exhaust.

In 1908 an immense explosion in the Tunguska region of Siberia flatened trees over a 2000 square kilometre area, but left no crater.

One strange result of Tunguska is that the skies were lit up for days afterwards by NLCs. This had lead investigators to believe that Tunguska was caused by a comet which started to release water vapour when it entered the upper atmosphere, just like the shuttle did.

The particle size for the ISON dust is thought to be similar to cigarette smoke, just a few microns across.

Here is an interesting article about NLCs and why they are becoming more common. It talks about changes to the mesosphere, planetary waves and predicting NLC

It's noctilucent cloud time again, if you are in the Northern Hemisphere. Here is a quick reminder of what they are:
