This interpolated NAVCAM image is taken from around 300km from 67P. Landing on that is not going to be easy. Wednesday is officially arrival day, when Rosetta will be within 100km of 67P and it begins a challenging schedule of manoeuvres to establish it in orbit around the comet.

When Rosetta arrives at comet 67P tomorrow the focus will be on establishing Rosetta in a stable orbit around 67P. Pretty soon it will begin to gather information about the comets properties from a battery of 11 instruments.

These will be supplemented by ten more when the Philae probe lands on the surface. We really are going to revolutionise our understanding of comets and the early solar system.

Rosetta arrives at comet 67P tomorrow, it is 212 km and 1,326 teravolts away.

ESA have released the rendezvous schedule for tomorrow. The orbit insertion burn will take place at 09:00 UTC, that is when Rosetta has officially arrived at comet 67P

Thanks KipKat. After tomorrow I will probably post less often here. It's going to be a long mission with lots of quiet news days in between big events or discoveries. I will try and keep the thread going. Once Rosetta features in the mainstream news, we will probably see some Rosetta conspiracy theories on GLP too.

Yes, they want to land somewhere interesting from the science point of view, but not too challenging. The whole mission is wildly ambitious. Here is the bizarre shape of the comet.

Rosetta has to close to within a few km of the surface to release the Philae lander. Apart form the strange shape they also have to deal with the fact the comet is rotating. Each frame in this animation is 20 minutes.

When the probe lands on the surface there is almost no gravity to keep it there, so it's going to fire two harpoons into the surface. How many things could go wrong ?

Interesting to note that if you walked in the direction the comet was rotating in, you would immediately reach escape velocity and disappear off into space forever.

It would be an enormous achievement if they succeed in landing on that. This must be the most difficult landing ever attempted!

I think it is one of the most difficult space missions ever attempted. Rosetta has been on its way for ten years, has performed close flybys of the Earth and Mars as well as asteroids Steins and Lutetia. It's been in hibernation for months and it still has its most difficult stages to come.

The Japanese had a comparable mission around 2005 called Hyabusa. Hyabusa was a sample return mission to the asteroid Itokawa. In the sample and landing phase just about everything went wrong, including losing their lander into deep space when it was released at the wrong point. The mission as a whole was a triumph though.

Philae's landing is going to be even tougher. No one knows what the surface composition is like. They may find hard silicate rock that the harpoons can't penetrate, or ices that sublimate away, taking the lander with them. It could be a thick layer of dust, I have even heard comets described as having the consistency of cigarette ash. If ever thing works in the mission, I will be amazed.

They can't land on the comet.

Why? Because comets are highly charged because of the high elleptical orbit. The potential difference between the lander and the comet is HUGE.

Even when it lands softly, it will explode with a HUGE ELECTRIC FLASH.

So, if it does successfully land, will you reconsider your "electric universe" nosense, or will you just find some new excuse to explain why there is no discharge, explosion etc?

The whole EU "theory" (it really doesn't deserve that name) is a badly put together collection of ideas which have no proper basis in science, no measurements to back them up, and no properly testable hypotheses. It's time you gave up on it...

I think the Rosetta mission is the perfect test for the electric comet belief. Rosetta is closing in with 67P and in November the Philae lander will hopefully land on the surface so according to electric comet we should see a large electric discharge at some point. Electric comet people claim that the deep impact imaptor was destroyed by a huge spark. They like to call electric comet a theory so it must make strong predictions and be falsifiable, here is the experiment, lets see what happens.

Whipple's original paper does seem to imply he thought comet's surfaces would be dry and dusty.

I'm guessing from your reference to electrical signatures you are electric comet believer. You are welcome to have a guess as to when Rosetta will be destroyed by the giant spark.

As for Newtonian mechanics being questionable ( I think that 's what you are saying ), you do realise that Newtonian mechanics has delivered Rosetta after 10 years, 5 months and 6 billion kilometres to the exact point in space they planned over 15 years ago for a rendezvous with a comet travelling at over 15km/s . Electro statics have played no part in that calculation.

Some are indeed predicting an electrical discharge between the Philae lander and the comet core. Though I'm not excluding that, I don't think it will be a dangerous discharge as the lander approaches very slowly with leaving enough time for charge equilization.

Newtonian physics is sufficient for many aspects of space travel but it cannot explain for instance the orbiting velocity of stars within a galaxy or the acceleration of the solar wind with further distance from the solar surface.

I'm afraid you can't have that. The vacuum of space is a strong dielectric material, otherwise we wouldn't have vacuum capacitors. The inner coma is not ionised so if you believe in electric comets then you will have a big dielectric breakdown event. Have the courage of your convictions and be the first to predict a voltage or distance. Here is some background to help you choose.

Well it predicts it just fine, just as it always has. The square of the orbital period is proportional to the cube of the radius. What I think you wanted to say is that we don't yet know the source of mass in galaxies halos, which is true. Two things we do know, MOND is unlikely to be an answer to the question as observations of Bullet cluster show.

Electro static forces can play no part at all. In a plasma medium the maximum distance of electro static effects is limited by the Debye length, in the solar system this is limited to a few metres, in intergalactic space, a few hundred kilometres. Beyond those distances there is no net effect. It is possible to extend those distances through atmospheric or magnetic charge separation effects, but that doesn't extend to orbital distances.



The emission of the solar wind is a complex phenomenon, that I can't speak about with any degree of confidence, I hope you find what you need here.

You should be aware that the solar wind is a quasi ( net ) neutral plasma. This means that is has a balance of charges. Direct measurements of this fact have been made since the early sixties and continue to this day. This neutrality is in direct opposition of predictions of electric universe people.
