Coincidence? In 2012 Malaysia Airlines Scheduled To Decommission All Of Their Boeing 777-200's In Late 2014 (Including MH370 & MH17)
Go figure that Malaysia Airlines announced in 2012 that they had a 3 year plan (aimed for late 2014) to decommission all of their Boeing 777-200 series aircraft (to replace them with more cost effective aircraft such as the Boeing 777X, Boeing 787 Dreamliner or the Airbus A350 XWB). This would of conveniently included MH17 (M9-MRD) & MH370 (M9-MRO), both of which were Boeing 777-200ER model aircraft.

What a coincidence! I guess it's also a coincidence that most of the news sources talking about this story years ago, are no longer valid links.

Example:Malaysia Air Speeds Boeing Exit from Fleet - July 26, 2012
...Bloomberg News reported Tuesday on its website, citing the company's Chief Executive Officer Ahmad Jauhari Yahya. Ahmad Jauhari said in an interview at the Farnborough air show that the airline's remaining nine Boeing 747 planes would likely be gone by the end of November rather than in March as planed earlier, and its 777-200s would be gone within three years, the report said.

That (removed) NASDAQ article then links to a Bloomburg article, which still exist.

Malaysian Air Speeds Boeing Exodus as A330 Revamp Appeals - July 10, 2012
Malaysian Airline System Bhd. (MAS) will accelerate the exit of Boeing Co. (BA) wide-body jets from its fleet and look at ordering the upgraded A330 model announced by Airbus SAS yesterday, Chief Executive Officer Ahmad Jauhari Yahya said.

Now they are talking about a government bailout for Malaysia Airlines (*cough* payoff for letting them use their soon to be decommissioned jet as part of their op's).

Go figure!

Yeah, I saw this on the wiki page a week ago and thought it was strange. Five stars, OP. It probably isn't on the wiki anymore.

I am calling bsflag as the 777 lifespan is still young.

They are efficient for what they do.

UNLESS they are going to a new aircraft. And selling the old but would have taken a loss so there are now two insurance claims to even out losses.

Based on your deep 0 seconds of research huh?

Expect the 747s to be gone as early as November, with the 777s disappearing within three years. That's pretty good news for business travellers, since Malaysia Airlines' newer planes have more comfortable business class seats and better entertainment systems -- and they're quieter too.

MAS has 17 777-200ERs in its fleet, with an average age of 12.6 years, according to Maybank Investment Bank, with the youngest being 7.6 years old and the oldest 15.2 years.
"Since all the regional competitors have an average fleet age of less than 10 years, MAS has no choice but to obtain and maintain a perpetually young fleet, and so the B777-200ER must go, said Moshin Aziz, analyst at Maybank.

A used Boeing 777-200 is still worth about $50 million while the loss of these 2 planes likely spells the end for Malaysia Airlines.

Nope, not buying it. This would be like wanting to buy a new car so you get drunk and crash your old car. While the insurance settlement might be more than trade in value on the old car the legal costs and possibly getting sued if you crash into someone would probably prevent you from buying the new car.
