Toledo PD K-9 Declared Dangerous
JJ bit a boy playing with the K9 handler's son. Opens a whole can of worms, doesn't it?

"According to police, the boys started playing a little rough, and that's when they believe JJ jumped in to protect his handler's son. He bit the neighbor boy on the back.

In what the City of Toledo's law director says is an unprecedented move, the dog warden labeled the K-9 a dangerous dog."

Does JJ deserve his new label?

Re: Toledo PD K-9 Declared Dangerous
German Shepherds are known to be "slow to mature". JJ was 20-22 months old. After his "bite" JJ was evaluated.

JJ was evaluated and found to be a "high-energy, high-drive dog" with "no signs of aggression."

Could he have been playing? The boy needed no stitches and was treated and released.

Edited after realizing combined posts would have violated copyright.

I don't think JJ deserves his new label, while the incident is one to keep an eye on, the dog was young, to allow to children to play wildly in front of any dog is flat out stupid on the handlers/fathers part. JJ the dog was doing what dogs do.

As for the family with the what will turn into a civil suit for the city, move on you idiots.

Thanks for your comments, Lost Angel.
Based on the facts that have been released, I agree with you.

By legal definition, JJ appears to be a dangerous dog. By the same definition, most puppies could be classified as dangerous.

(a) "Dangerous dog" means a dog that, without provocation, and subject to division (A)(1)(b) of this section, has done any of the following:

(i) Caused injury, other than killing or serious injury, to any person;

(ii) Killed another dog;

(iii) Been the subject of a third or subsequent violation of division (C) of section 955.22 of the Revised Code.

Grandma of 9 yr. old injured boy speaks:

His grandmother says her grandson was bit on the back. She says he has some scarring from the bite and is fearful.

"He's little scared of big dogs he doesn't know now and he never was," she says.

The dog warden has deemed J.J. dangerous. State law says a dog can be labeled dangerous if it bites and hurts someone unprovoked. The officer must buy J.J. a dangerous dog tag, post a sign at his home that there's a dangerous dog, microchip J.J., provide proof of rabies vaccination, and show evidence the dog has been neuter or spayed.

The boys family does not want the dog put down. The dog is still in service. The officer has ten days to appeal the dog wardens ruling. The dog warden and the city of Toledo declined to comment since the family's lawyer has filed a claim for personal injuries with the city.

Great information Nines. I know your an animal lover also and from posts read over the years by you, you have a tremendous amount of understanding of animal behavior.

The handler was totally at fault for allowing rough housing around this highly trained juvenile canine.
Sometimes dogs and pups think there human counterparts (in this case the handlers son) is a litter mate, JJ may have simply reacting out of the complexities of canine behavior. The aggressive nature of the bite is telling because had JJ been attempting to be inclusive in roughhouse play he would not have broken the skin? of the boy bitten, and being a young JJ he may not have known his own strength in breaking the skin with a bite,it is possible that had it been another canine the flesh would not have broke? Which would have made it play for JJ?

Many police dogs are "rescued" from certain death, after they have bitten or killed a child.

I have to disagree the majority of Police canines or specialty canines come from very reputable breeders of intelligent specific training breeds.

Thank you, Lost Angel. I know you too are an animal lover. It's an interesting theory you have and worth considering. Totally agree the dog shouldn't have been near their play and should have been supervised wherever he was.

From the pictures of the "bite" it's hard for me to see that JJ intended to inflict damage. If he had, that boy would still be in the hospital.

My dog is also high energy, high drive, and while he was learning that play with humans has to be inhibited, and a hand may be holding the toy he's after, my hands had tooth scratches far worse than this boy's "bites". When it happened, it wasn't aggression at all. It was desire to get that toy without the maturity and experience to know he needed to take it carefully.

It doesn't sound like we'll ever know what really happened. There are no witnesses except the boys themselves. Just a bad situation all the way around. I hope the dog doesn't get labeled because it opens the door for any puppy to be labeled dangerous for simply playing before it's learned acceptable limits. This particular dog shouldn't have been "playing" or in the area of those boys playing, regardless of what happened.

Thanks for your intelligent input. hf

Now what would a cop do to YOUR dog if he just bit somebody?

Or if he was just chasing a ball or sleeping on your front porch?
