Great input folks, reason I asked was because I doubt I can get far, bad knee, injured toe, wife, kids......

All requires careful planning and thought. Lots for me to think about

Any other input welcome

I have no idea how far I could walk with a my backpack full of stuff. Back in my army days it was quite a distance I also decided it was way to much work. So my plan is to stay right here and eat the neighbour's

Re: So, SHTF, can you even carry your BOB?
During the Vietnam War the North Vietnamese used sturdy bicycles to carry about 300# through the jungles down the Ho Chi Ming Trail all the way from N Vietnam to their staging areas in the jungles in the south (several hundred miles). Didn't ride them ... used them as two wheeled NARROW carts.

Just a thought ... for those who are committed to going into the wilderness withOUT a vehicle. Be sure to get the new aftermarket "solid" tires though so you don't have to worry about tires going flat.

Around here you can buy old style single speed steel framed bicycles at yard sales all day long for about $20. Add in another $60 for solid tires, and then build a cargo frame for it (or get one used by delivery bicycles - yep delivery bicycles are still sometimes still used even in the US), and voila, you have a way to carry lots of weight/gear into the wilderness.

fwiw the US Park Service uses a modern POWERED version of this idea in many cases for carrying the heavier equipment into the wildness that they need for trail building and trail maintaining (instead of using real mules).

I think japan also used bicycles during ww2 while we were bogged down in the mud on the kokoda trail they were pushing their bicycle carts along at a great rate of knots.

Nah I dont think so maybee just after a shopping cart would be usefull to a limited extent i know i would grab one if the situation dictated.

But its not going to be long before those tiny cart wheels
are a major hinderance to movement sinking into the mud
or getting stuck on small cracks in the concrete/pavement/road.it would not be long before a travoise would be the better setup.

That cart he had at the end of the road would be a much better choice than a shopping cart.

Re: So, SHTF, can you even carry your BOB?
Not anymore. 5 blown disks and major surgery ruined that years ago. Back in the day we used to do backpack trips all the time. My pack was usually about 90 lbs. I know plenty of dopes that have nothing, so I'll make them carry it or I'll let them be eaten.

Oh I get it, you'll ask for a timeout and move to a better position.

rolls eyes!!
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 60275215

Oh great one!!! Tell me what I should do then....After all, you probably have a one size fits all plan that covers every single possibility. I guess you are the one that sits around doing nothing waiting for the government to come save you....
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1219974

Oh no, Im sure a timeout will work if you're surrounded and under assault.
Nobody would dare be so ungallant as to refuse your request to prevail against them.
If you ask nice, they may even help out!

That goes for you to you stupid fuck.

Re: So, SHTF, can you even carry your BOB?
I regularly run, hike and climb with a 35 pound ruck. Realistically 35 pounds won't last much more than 3 or 4 days if you are on the move. Now add to that,a sidearm and a couple of mags, the tac vest and 300 rounds, plates and accessories and your packing upwards of 60 pounds of gear. If you don't practice moving with this stuff you will fail. Do you run or speed march with your rifle? if you don't practice you will fail. Personally, I don't have a BOB, I have a get home bag in the car. My GHB has just enough gear and supplies to get me home If I have to leave my rig. Three days max in sneak mode, less if you have to run and gun. When bad stuff happens Murphy's law always applies, you'll be away from your preps at work, or grocery shopping and you might not be able to drive to get back to them.
