LinkedIn - Has anyone else found this site not only useless, but damn annoying in every respect?

Take the time to set it up correctly, might need to have your favourite tipple near by to help as it is very tedious.

I know people in IT for whom it is very, very useful.
But for those of us who are just regular ole people, not superstars in our field and without a kick-ass pimped out resume - meh, seems pointless.

I was told that it's a modern necessity if you're looking for a job, that employers will choose someone to interview that has a LinkedIn profile over someone that doesn't. I really don't want my personal info up for all to see. Oh and they said your chances of getting an interview are better if you have your picture on there.

100% true. It's much more useful for someone that has 10+ years is a specific field and is known for his/her work experience than someone with let's say 5 years in a company that is not known outside his/her country.

Just see how many connections worldwide someone has if his/her prior experience was in a know multinational company.

For IT and Finance/Accounting (Internal Auditing, CFA, CPA/ACCA etc.) sectors is indeed a must have.

This thread is older but seems LinkedIn is still doing the same deceptive shady marketing. The unsubscribe link in their spam email does nothing, if you ever cancelled they still spam your email, has anyone tried calling them to stop the spam?

Im 33 and when I apply for a good office job they demand to see my linkedin and facebook when I say I dont use them im treated like a freak. Its a 100% must to use and be active on both.

I had to set up a linkedin profile as part of a university course. this was a few years ago. ever since then, I get a few thousand dollars per month in donations! i've also snagged quite a few hot dates on there. it's always a good day when you wake up and you have a hot secretary private messaging you "DTF?"

Sadly, this seems to be true in my field, at any rate. I don't like having information out there either. I think it increases the likelihood people can be socially engineered. Recruiting in general is totally FUBAR. I have created a LinkedIn profile at least 3 times and later deleted it bc I don't like having my info out there....even though I can control how much work history, etc. I disclose.

The interface is cludgey, as well.

OP you can adjust your email settings. I have mine set to receive 0 email.

I don't trust social media in general, so I limit my connections on linkedin to people I know IRL, from work for the most part , though do have some recruiters as connections, too.
