Historical accounts by people living at and around Reykjanes.

Reykjanes peninsula doesn't have a central volcano but6 6 different volcanic systems spread alongside the Atlantic ridge that is rifting apart across the peninsula.

All the other systems erupted 800-1200 years ago.
This particular system called Fagradalsfjall hasn't erupted for about 6000 years.

A bit of an update on the eruption.

Magma samples have been analyzed and the results are quite interesting.

The samples only match lava's on the peninsula that date back to the late ice age around 6000 years ago.

Even more interesting is from where it comes. 17-20 km down, directly from the mantle. This has never been witnessed in modern day Iceland.

What this means is that this "small" eruption might be a Shield Volcano forming. If so, this eruption can last years, possibly decades.

If it erupts this long what will it do to the earth? Mini Ice Age?

Nah..this type of lava isn't as rich on gases more mature lava so any problems will mostly be locally I would think.

Yeah..my thought exactly, especially with all the busloads travelling there each day. Amazingly no one has gotten hurt by lava as of now.

It's a 2-3 hour walk from the road but it's the most popular activity amongst people in the capital at the moment.

Urder, I have a question you may be able to help me with. When a smaller volcano erupts in a region like this with other volcano's, does this keep the others around it from erupting for years or is it still possible for them to erupt soon after. Thank you

It is indeed very likely that other systems on the Peninsula can activate at any time. That is the nature of the eruptive cycle that happens there. Every cycle tends to last up to 400 years with multiple intermittent eruptions.

In fact activation of 2 other systems has already been observed since this cycle of activity started around 15 years ago.

The first one was that magma buildup around Þorbjörn close to Grindavík and the Blue Lagoon just west of this eruption.(Svartsengi volcanic system)

Later last year a magma buildup was also witnessed at Krýsuvík just east of this eruption. (Krýsuvík volcanic system).

On those 2 occations magma simply failed to reach the surface and solidified in the crust.

So we are most likely in for a long ride of multiple eruptions.
