Quoting: run away slave I know it's Friday night...BUT if the viruses being spewed at us from every direction kicks off and you have to teach your community, friends, children, family and stragglers.... If you had to post an anonymous flyer in town ....whatever What would be your KEY POINTS to make? To frequently wash hands using proper hand washing technique, at least 30 seconds with soap and water, interlocking fingers. If possible use paper towel or your arm to turn taps off. Cough and sneeze into your elbow. Avoid touching your face, etc in public. Proper use of PPE or 'universal precautions'. How to put on and take offmasks and gloves without contaminating yourself. Also double gloving techniques. To avoid close contact with people who appear sick if you aren't wearing proper PPE To take off your shoes at the threshold of your house. (and clothes, then shower if it is really bad) Basic techniques of stress management, and how to keep it together. The above things are the proven best defense against infection from most things. I could elaborate into the paranoid depending on the proposed level of infection in the environment lol. |

The conclusion I've to is that if you're surrounded by Ebola, you're going to get infected no matter what. For example, your Ebola-infected neighbor knocks on your door, you open the door and he immediately sneezes. Or your mailman has Ebola. Or Ebola is on your money. Or somebody preparing food at the cafeteria at work has Ebola... If it goes pandemic, it's going to be everywhere. I don't see any way to escape it. Your thoughts on that? |

Thread: Anonymous doctor reveals Ebola treatment IMHO, if Ebola becomes a worldwide pandemic, it's better to just assume you're going to get it and approach everything that way (see my post earlier as to why I think that's the best approach). |

If you escalate your level of caution with the outbreak, it should be avoidable to a point. Why are you opening your door without a mask? Is there anything your mail man is going to bring you that is worth your life? It really depends on how bad it actually gets. Self isolation/social distancing added to the precautions I have listed would go a long way. This is assuming things like civil unrest and famine didn't get you. If the infection is that wide spread locally... I would suggest shelter in place, no contact outside the house... Of course that would mean having months of food... and this is where the secondary issues/killers come in, as we will likely see in Africa. |

Medic User ID: 25033107 Canada 08/23/2014 03:25 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | "Another thing we are looking at is what goes wrong with the immune response during viral infection. Our bodies are so good at responding to so many diseases, and in most cases we get sick for a couple of days and then we get better. Our response to Ebola is totally out of whack. The immune system appears to deliver a much more aggressive response than is necessary, one that causes a lot of damage to the body. That overreaction is a significant part of what makes infection with this virus so deadly. What kind of damage is done by the overreaction? The response is so strong that it triggers other pathologies. This can include diffuse intravascular coagulopathy, which is why the virus is often called a hemorrhagic fever virus. Normally, coagulation is constantly serving your body, so if you get cut you get a nice blood clot that seals you up. It’s a great way to keep your blood from leaking out. In the case of Ebola, you get clotting in inappropriate places, such as organs like the liver. The problem is, you have a finite number of clotting factors in your body, and they get depleted from the inappropriate clotting. When that happens, you have a hole in your body that needs clotting but won’t stop bleeding. All the small things that happen on a daily basis that are normally taken care of by coagulation are not working." This isn't scurvy or the common cold. It might help? Intuitively vitamin K would seem more of a factor to me... Medic User ID: 25033107 Canada 08/23/2014 03:37 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Supplements are generally unnecessary and may in fact be detrimental. Eat a widely varied diet of 'natural' or whole foods (rather than heavily processed), the body does not absorb certain synthetic nutrients well. Eat fresh fruit and vegetables as long as they remain available. Organic if that is your thing. A diverse diet is more important. The human body will generally absorb what it needs and discard the rest, in the absence of other clinical conditions. |

Stay the fuck away from people. 4. Any other questions see 1 through 3. The reality is that masks are not very effective, nor gloves nor all of these other things people are suggesting. If they were effective then all of those health care workers who have contracted this special brand of microscopic death wouldn't have caught it. The best bet is to stay away from people. |

I agree staying away from people is the best defense, that may not always be possible. Masks and gloves and hand washing may not be 100% effective, they are barriers, like condoms. Maybe 95% effective if you know how to use them? (N95 blocks 95% particles if fit tested, there are still your eyes...) Still if you are working in an Ebola ward, there is always a chance. With thousands of exposures, that small percentage becomes a certainty. I'd rather have 90% protection than 0%, for when exposure is not avoidable |
