I'm sure JPC van Heijst has a twitter page and aviation picture pages. Someone should ask him for more details or at least verify the story and images.

Looks like it could be sprites (upwardly shooting lightening) from ground lightening storm.

Nothing new.

sprites occur from the stratosphere to the ionosphere, planes fly below stratosphere so sprites would not be underneath them. This is shown in your link you provided

Russians are/were notorious for dumping Nuclear Reactor spent radioactive cores in remote areas of the Oceans.

So does the U.S.

I recall seeing environmental researchers exposing the U.S. Military dumping Railroad cars full of Deadly Nerve Gas into the Ocean off the coast of California?

Hey whats a dozen Tanker Cars full of deadly nerve gas, or a Nuclear Reactor core or two?

It's all good.

New Giant Volcano Below Sea Is Largest in the World

Tamu Massif in the northwest Pacific challenges traditional views of ocean science.

A volcano the size of New Mexico or the British Isles has been identified under the Pacific Ocean, about 1,000 miles (1,600 kilometers) east of Japan, making it the biggest volcano on Earth and one of the biggest in the solar system.

Called Tamu Massif, the giant shield volcano had been thought to be a composite of smaller structures, but now scientists say they must rethink long-held beliefs about marine geology.

“This finding goes against what we thought, because we found that it’s one huge volcano,” said William Sager, a geology professor at the University of Houston in Texas. Sager is lead author in a study about the find that was published this week in the peer-reviewed journal Nature Geoscience.

“It is in the same league as Olympus Mons on Mars, which had been considered to be the largest volcano in the solar system,” Sager told National Geographic.

Tamu Massif is a rounded dome that measures about 280 by 400 miles (450 by 650 kilometers), or more than 100,000 square miles. Its top lies about 6,500 feet (about 2,000 meters) below the ocean surface, while the base extends down to about 4 miles (6.4 kilometers) deep. Tamu Massif dwarfs the largest active volcano on Earth, Mauna Loa in Hawaii, which measures about 2,000 square miles (5,200 square kilometers).

No name calling. It was a good guess but it couldn't be a sprite.

Sprites take place in the mesosphere 60-80Km in the atmosphere. A sprite would have been seen above a plane flying at 10km in the air. Sprites are also short flashes, which is not how the pilot described them.

I've been looking for to see if they're are any articles on bioluminessent sea life that glow red. Not much luck.

Yes- I spotted this too! A 4.6 Mag on night of the 24th; @ 46.4452° N Lat; 152.3556° E. Long.

A bit too far north to be connected, I'm thinking now.
Tamu's coordinates are 33.0000 N, 158.0000 E.

Will definitely be paying closer attention to quakes from that location though.

Maddening, the shortage of info on this Tamu- a few sites, but all saying pretty much the same- not much new since it's 'discovery'.

I am sure at least some of the passengers with window seats must have seen the same or at least part of the same.

I have seen St Elmo's fire in the Bay of Bengal from a flight. I don't recall it being like what is posted on his pictures at all. More like (silent) lightning.

I still think this is volcanic. Undersea volcano or not. I don't really know - some gas burning in the sea?

A geologist would have some idea?

Anyone here have located the Tamu massif on a map? Other pilots going the same route must have seen it too I am sure.

Many heavies fly on the same flight path following one another all the time 365 days a year.

Read their story

"Last night over the Pacific Ocean, somewhere South of the Russian peninsula Kamchatka I experienced the creepiest thing so far in my flying career. After about 5 hours in flight we left Japan long time behind us and were cruising at a comfortable 34.000ft with about 4,5 hours to go towards Alaska. We heard via the radio about earthquakes in Iceland, Chile and San Francisco, and since there were a few volcanos on our route that might or might not be going off during our flight, we double checked with dispatch if there was any new activity on our route after we departed from Hongkong. Then, very far in the distance ahead of us, just over the horizon an intense lightflash shot up from the ground. It looked like a lightning bolt, but way more intense and directed vertically up in the air. I have never seen anything like this, and there were no flashes before or after this single explosion of light. Since there were no thunderstorms on our route or weather-radar, we kept a close lookout for possible storms that might be hiding from our radar and might cause some problems later on."

Questions. If the pilot saw this I am sure some of the passengers also saw this. If I was the pilot and saw this I would definitely let the passengers know what I saw right away so people wouldn't think I was crazy when I told this story or released the pics.

Where are the pics from the passengers and with everyone posting their every move on FB and TWTR these days I would think that some of the passengers would have been describing what they saw on FB or TWTR.

It would be really interesting if this were true, but...Well hopefully some of the passengers come forward to tell their stories.

"We reported our observations to Air Traffic Control and an investigation into what happened in this remote region of the ocean is now started.

Two photos included, hardly edited except for watermark and resize. Note that photos are taken with extremely high ISO (sensor sensitivity) so quality might be a bit poor. Also an overview of our route + marking of the location is included.

Now I'm just hoping that if a new island has been formed there, at least it can be named after me as the official discoverer. :)
That would be pretty cool!"
